this is my new dude-built 474 with 68cc e-heads from SD Performance. shortblock is an eagle 4.25 crank, eagle 6.8 rods, ross 4.21 slugs, and a comp roller cam. the heads have 68cc chambers for 12.5:1 (or maybe a little more) compression. each port flows a minimum of 310@.600 lift and 315@.700 (a couple flow close to 320).

the engine is in the car now, but we're having an issue with the hooker headers clearing the indian adventures motor mount on the passenger side. this will be solved tomorrow at lunch with a sawzall and everything should be buttoned up tomorrow night. we'll make noise on friday night, then retorque the heads, set the timing, check the fuel pressure, change the oil and put it on the trailer for it's first trip to the track next tuesday.

another pic...unfortunately i couldn't get any pics of the heads before they went on because my roommate was hogging his digital camera.

i know the lighting sucks (a row of lights are out in my friend's garage), but here's one more looking down from the top.

Nice.
Would that be a Spotts "dude" built shortblock? http://pysales.com/images/boxing.gif
What kinda block?

rumair
11-17-2004, 08:52 PM
hehe...ken built it himself, but not without a big save from paul in the oil pump pickup department. milodon supposedly was back ordered for 3 weeks and paul came through with the correct piece and got it to the dude in 2 days.

as you might have guessed, the block is from a 74 grand safari station wagon. http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

brian a. cleaned up the pics for me, but it wouldn't let me replace the first one, so here it is again (should be a little brighter).

http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Anyone ever notice that Scott shop towels are pontiac blue! LOL I noticed you have them in the spark plug holes.
Looks good, did the water pump come that way? (ball milled look)

What kind of water pump?

lug- we found out that those towels don't hold cylinder pressure very well. just turning the engine over slowly by hand blows them out 4-5 feet from the head when that particular cylinder comes to the top! the water pump did come that way and i agree that it looks pretty cool.

harry k- according to dave bisschop each cylinder is capable of supporting something like 84 horsepower with my cam. i don't think a stock victor will move that much air, but i think it might make 600 hp and maybe a that much torque. my cam is a custom comp roller; specs are 269/275 duration at .050, .692 lift with 1.6 rockers, 108 lsa installed on a 104 intake centerline. please email me if you'd like to share your numbers.

skip- it's a CSR water pump. we've always run the moroso belt driven pumps, but my friends switched to the CSR last year and loved it, so i though i'd give it a shot.

as of 7:45 tonight it's a living, breathing monster. it idled after a couple of minutes without us even having to play with the timing. we ran the engine for 15 minutes, let the water temp get to 185 and then shut it down.

tomorrow night we'll change the oil, re-torque the heads, give the engine a once-over to check for any loose bolts or connections, set the timing and put it on the trailer. thanks to the extremely cooperative north florida weather, i'm going to the track on tuesday night where the humidity should be close to zero and the temperature should be in the mid 50's. http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have the same waterpump and I believe that's a CSI. I bought mine after they went from the flat cover to the machined grooves and have had good luck with lot's of street miles.

Rumair, the engine looks cool.

it says CSR, although it might be manufactured by CSI.

nope, but we probably should have before it went in the car.

wes set the timing yesterday and got the idle pretty close to where we want it.

i'm going to our local 1/8 mile track on tuesday night and if everything goes well i'll take the car to gainesville on wednesday night (it's their last test and tune night of the year).

any guesses as to what it will run? i think it will go mid 6.60's @ 102-103 in the 1/8 and mid 10.50's @ 126-127 on the big road.

I like the cast look, in fact, I am painting my 461 block cast iron color. It will also have aluminum heads and valley pan intake timing cover and water pump. Plus all the brackets and pulleys are alum too. You will barely see the block anyway. I thought about painting it aluminum color too, has anyone done that?

Rumair,
Looks great! Should be able to run those numbers pretty easily. You have more cam and heads that are porbably better than mine. I ran 6.29 in 1/8 at about 110 and 9.80's in the 1/4 at 136. My race weight is about 3,045#. Good luck at the track. I might have gone to Gainesville but I am going to the Trukey Rod Run on Friday and Saturday this week with the GTO.

mark- mine's several hundred pounds north of that, but you're welcome to bring your car up here so we can put my engine in and see what it will do. http://forums.performanceyears.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

have fun at the rod run and be safe.
