To make a long storty short I ended up with a 67 GP convertable in a trade I made. The owner didnt know much about it and said it had a 428 engine.I drove it home and it ran great but smoked out the right side. I decided to pull and rebuild the engine since its a total restoration job anyway.

My question is exactly what engine do I have. The heads are stamped 143. Front of the block is stamped 337102 YE.To the left of the dist. it is stamped 6133 and A187. In front of the 6133 is eithr a 3 or a 8 but there is a tap screw thewre drilled right in the middle of it.

I have read several post and I seem to think it is a 400 not a 428.And am I right in my assumption that the numbers on the block should match the numbers on the vin plate to be numbers matching?

The vin plate is stamped.

been a while since i have crunched #s but here we go. YE is a 67 325HP 400. A187 is the build date which i beleive to be jan. 18, 1967. you might want to try doing a forum search on matching the vin , as i recall there was some debate on when the #s started to match. the info you provided is the body plate which shows the body style ,assembly plant , and paint and trim colors. the vin is either in the lower corner of the windsheild or in the drivers door jamb depending on year. sorry i can't be of more help and anyone please feel free to step in and correct me as i am mostly going from memory.

every pontiac block i ever seen has a molded stamp on the front left side stamped what the block is. i bought a 400 out of a 67 grand prix and it is stamped 400 towards the front, my 455 is stamped as well.and to know what casting of heads you have , they will be stamped in the center of your center exhaust ports, that year came out with high output heads stamped 670, look closely. sincerely Bret

Your right that was the body id tag. The vin #266677x177538 is in the inside door jamb.I have a few bids in on pontiac books on ebay and searching the ocal used book stores as well so maybe I will be able to learn a few things about this car as well as learning to read codes.

Thanks for the help and a direction to look.

The YE is a 1967 400 as was said.
It came with the 143 heads which you have.
Used a Carter AFB type 4 bbl carb.
The partial 6133 is the block casting code - 9786133which is correct for a 1967 400 block.

Sounds original to me.

Nice car.

It was always my understanding the '67 Grand Prix came std. with a 350 horse code XJ block. Pontiac offered a no=cost 2-barrel option on full size, but I do not know if it was available on GP. Coincidentally, my '67 GP also has the YE block. Now I can't help but wonder if the 325 horse YE was available or standard. Anybody???

My records indicate that the YE code engine was not available on the GP in '67. This engine was spec'ed only for the Catalina, Executive and Bonneville w/o AC.

The Grand Prix received:
YA - 2bbl 400 265hp HMT opt. w/o A.I.R.
YB - 2bbl 400 265hp HMT opt. w/A.I.R.
XY - 4bbl 400 350hp MAN std. w/A.I.R., GP only
XZ - 4bbl 400 350hp MAN std. w/o A.I.R., GP only
XH - 4bbl 400 350hp HMT opt. w/o AC, GP only
XC - 4bbl 400 293hp HMT opt. low comp, Exec. and GP only (export?)
XJ - 4bbl 400 350hp HMT opt. w/AC, GP only
YY - 4bbl 428 360hp MAN opt. w/A.I.R.
WG - 4bbl 428 360hp MAN opt.
YH - 4bbl 428 360hp HMT opt.
WJ - 4bbl 428HO 376hp MAN opt.
XK - 4bbl 428HO 376hp MAN opt. w/A.I.R.
YK - 4bbl 428HO 376hp HMT opt.

So, this begs the question, what was the 4bbl (400 or 428) w/HMT and A.I.R., or was HMT not available in CA? I find it hard to believe that the GP could not be had in CA with an auto. Perhaps the A.I.R. was not spec'ed for the HMT in CA, but was added to the XH, XJ, YH, and YK in CA.

Anyone with an A.I.R. and 4bbl HMT-equipped CA '67 GP out there that can clarify?
