HI, If your shifter is a factory Hurst in a GTO or Pontiac has a pin in it that slides sideways to select the proper lever, this pin and the spacer plates are worn and the shifter(most likely) is dried out totally from it's original grease, anyway your shifter needs rebuilt by now and that will cure the rattle once and for all.

Peter didn't mention it, but he rebuilds those shifters and does an excellent job. They work better than new when he gets done with them, and charges a fair price. He rebuilt mine for me, and i havn't had a bit of noise out if it since. Rich

Thanks very much for the "thumbs up" on my shifter work, I don't like to advertise directly on these boards, but when a happy customer does it for me all I can say is: THANKS!

Just to give everybody on the list an idea, here are all the parts from a 69 GTO OEM Hurst 4 speed shifter; so you can easily can see there's lots of places where a rattle could develop! http://images.andale.com/f2/130/124/6274843/1002597082059_69GPshifterparts.jpg
