QUADRAJET PROBLEMS

I BOUGHT A 67 GTO OUT OF GEORGIA LAST YEAR.THERE WAS NO AUTO. CHOKE ON IT.PREVIOUS OWNER SAID IT WAS ALWAYS HOT THERE , DIDN'T NEED ONE.JUST PUMP IT A LOT WHEN ITS COLD IT'LL START. AFTER GETTING IT HOME, DISCOVERED IT WAS AN EARLY BUICK 4 BARREL AND THE STOVE CHOKE I BOUGHT FOR IT FROM PY WOULDN'T FIT THE LINKAGE.BUT IT ALWAYS STARTED FINE FROM PUMPING IT AND RIGHT AWAY WHEN WARM. NOW I THINK THE ACCELERATOR PUMP IS SHOT BECAUSE ITS GETTING HARDER TO START. SHOULD I JUST GET A REBUILDING KIT OR PONY UP THE BUCKS FOR THE RIGHT CARB.AND LINKAGE . IM IN THE NORTHEAST AND ITS A GREAT 3 DRIVER WITH OTHER THAN CARB #S MATCHING CAR.

As the ambient temperature cools, the need for a choke increases. I would not like to attempt to start a vehicle in the winter of Missouri without a choke, the same is probably true in the Northeast.

Unfortunately, the 1967 Q-Jet is the rarest and most expensive of all of the GTO carbs (excluding later H.O. and ram air), which is probably why the Buick carb was on the car. Remember that 1967 was the first year of the Q-Jet (for Pontiac 8 cylinder anyway), and the last year for no smog, so it truly is a one year design.

If you plan to make this into a total numbers matching, then you will have answered your own question. If you plan to keep it as a driver, I would suggest a 1968 or 1969 intake from a salvage yard, and a rebuilt Pontiac Q-Jet of the same year from your local autoparts store.
