I am in the process of trying to buy a project 67 GTO conv. the car has no engine and the firewall tag is missing the owner says he bought the car new (one owner) has miss placed the title and we need to know where the frame # are or any other way to determine the #, tag agent can not look up title by name.

also need to know the Vin number sequence for vin, motor, plant, color etc.

I was told that prior to 68 the motor # was not in the vin # ?

Thanks for your [email protected]

Neil,
The only place I know of the # being on the frame is on the drivers side by the #6 body mount...you'd have to lift the body to see it.. . According to the books I have they state the last 8 digits of the VIN were not used until 1968. Send your VIN to me and I'll decipher it for ya. I would be very wary about this car with missing tags and title...open the drivers door and on door ring near the door hinge should be another tag with VIN......larry

I have heard also that the #'s are not on the frames until 68. In the Zazarine book, I think it does describe the difference between the two frames made by the 2 suppliers. The difference can be noted in the mounting holes for the steering box I believe.

Hope that helps

I've got the body off the frame on my '66 and it does have the VIN number stamped on the left frame behing the rear wheel. It is further aft than Zazzrine's book shows and I really couldn't even make it out until I sand blasted the frame. So seeing it with a mirror and flashlight or something like that is very likely impossible.

How far from the back of the frame is it (")and does it have any of the vin #s or part of the vin#

The partial vin # on top of the frame should be on top of the left hand frame rail 12-24" from rear of frame. To view, remove the LH rear body bolt (5/8 head), the center frame body bolt (goes up by the seat belt retactor) & loosen up the rear bumper if needed. Body needs to be jacked up then a block can be put between frame & body. Once safe, you can take 80 grit to the top of the frame rail & feel for the imprinted #'s. Been a while since I have ck'ed a 64-67 frame, but believe # starts out with plant code, ex, K for Kansas City & the last 6 digits of the VIN. If the convert body is a 230 overhead cam 6 cylinder Tempest, this # will start with a 6.

Are both the stainless VIN tag missing out of the door jamb & the alum trim tag missing off the cowl?

Thanks, you guys are making the project easier.

This will make a good project if the paperworks can be retrieved.

a) Just to confirm, is this the same location on the frame for '65 GTO?

b) Again for a '65 GTO, is there a stamped VIN on the body anywhere (like under the heater box on a 69 Firebird)?

PART OF THE VIN NUMBER SHOULD BE ON THE TOP OF THE FET REAR FRAME RAIL BEHIND THE WHEEL

We just got done with a 67 convertable, the frame was pristine. There was a very clear partial VIN on the drivers side rail, to the outside of the center body mount hole. It was the last eight of the VIN, 7Z123456. had never seen one there! maybe it was a Freemont plant thing?

I'm not clear what the car is missing, The actual VIN tag from the drivers door jamb or just the cowl tag from the firewall. If the VIN is gone I don't think it matters if he has a title or not.It is just a parts car. If the VIN is there, you can get a title, and the cowl tag is available, just get it stamped to match the PHS documents.
