Will a 700R4 stand up behind a 462 built for street performance use?

The 700R4 is a really fine trans, and if you get one from ATI or some of the other transmission specialist you should get excellent life out of it. Most after market vendors have them that will hold up to 700 hp. You will enjoy the advantage it will give to you. I think it is a very good choice for a torque monster. http://performanceyears.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif http://performanceyears.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif http://performanceyears.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif http://performanceyears.com/ubb/icons/icon7.gif

Since this is a Chevy trans I'm assuming the use of an adapter plate in necessary. I did this once before with a Buick trans and Chevy engine and used spacers between the flexplate and torque converter to compensate for the thickness of the adapter but I think that caused balance problems. Would it be better to pull the converter forward and not use spacers? Who carries these adapters?

Any of the large vendors will have the adapter plate. Use the washers they supply as spacers, I'm sure they know what they are doing. You shouldn't have any problems with balance. If you do there must be a problem some place else.

MLS, exercise care when pulling the converter forward since it will reduce the amount of engagement that the converter has on the pump drive lugs. Also, when shimming rearward, make sure not to bottom the converter out into the pump as the pump gears will wear very quickly on their support sufaces.

That was my concern with the Buick trans I used years ago, so I used spacers. What is a good year/model donor for a 700R4? I was thinking late 80's Astro Van. Do these transmissions have electronic shift contol which requires an ECM? Thanks to everyone for the info, this is good stuff.

Jim WAngers has raced his Ponte Carlo for years with a 7004R without problems. Car runs in the 10 second range with laughing gas.

Don't forget about the 200-4r. It is a "bolt in" for a turbo 350. No adapters needed and It is the same length as a turbo 350 and uses the same yoke. They hold up with the Buick GN
motors. http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Speedway/4775/200r4.html

I just caught this thread. Jim Wangers(Ed DuFrene) has a 2004R in the PontiCarlo. He also has one in the other MonteCarlo.
IIRC, they are built by Art Carr.
The PontiCarlo runs high 11s on tme motor, and 10s on the spray.
