Seal, gasket or what?

I need a little advice from some of you guys that have more “motor” experience than I do. I have a 67 GTO with the original 400 that was re-built (by the previous Owner) less than 5000 miles ago and a 4-speed. I have an oil leak around the rear area of the engine. I suspected it may be the rear main seal and pulled off the inspection cover from the bell housing. I got about ½ cup of oil on my head. I cleaned things up and looked around. There was no oil on the engine side of the flywheel. There were a couple of drops of what appeared to be oil on the clutch fork. (I couldn’t get my hand or rag up in there to test it.) Now I’m puzzled. I put the car on jack stands and started the engine and crawled around to see what was going on. Over the course of about 15 minutes, I got 4 to 5 drops of oil that formed on the rear flange of the oil pan where it fits over the bearing cap. When the engine was reassembled, the little L-shaped brackets were not installed on the rear corners of the oil pan. (I think I remember seeing somewhere that this was a GM fix for a leaky oil pan gasket.) My questions are as follows. 1) Does this sound like an oil pan gasket or a rear main seal? 2) Can I replace either or both without pulling the engine? 3) Where in the heck could that oily substance on the clutch fork be coming from?
Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have any help for you but would be interested in the answer too. My oil pan and rear main both leak. 66 GTO.
