I recently replaced my speedometer cable & casing with a new GM cable due to some fluctuation. All was good for about 50 miles. Now I have a scraping noise and the fluctuation is back. The cable moves freely. Any ideas for a remedy. I just got the dash back in and hate to remove it again.

Your going to have to remove your speedo from out of the dash, because:
Each speedo from the 60s cars has an oil impregnated bronze bushing pressed
into the potmetal frame of the speedo, this bushing usually lasts at least
30 years but eventually the oil that's pressed into during manufacture will
dry out. There is not way to re-lube this bushing(believe me I've tried),
the bushing itself must be replaced. When you split the speed cup off of the
magnetic spinner the magnetic field collapses and you have to completely
disassemble the speedo in order to press out the bushing. Then you need to
recalibrate the speedo.
I would not drive around for long with the speedo squealing like it is, soon
the pointer will break off, and a new pointer is about $20 to $25.
