Well, I would have to say it is because there are a lot of Trans Ams running around still that came from the factory with an Olds 403 in them, not to mention other similiar cars :D

I have to say that a 79 T/A with a 403 Olds is a better all-around car than a Z/28 with its "own" motor. Yeah, it is frustrating that corprate politics did what they did. But compare the T/A on the highway,or a smooth curvy road and the car shines. I would take one in a minute smile.gif . But I will spit on a T/A or Formula or any Pontiac with a Chevy motor in it :D :D

Yesterday, I went to have a look at a '65 Bonneville Convertible. As you can imagine, these are pretty rare cars over here. I've heard of this car several times but never seen it before.

Guy had bought it in parts, fully re-assembled it and to his credit, it looks fantastic

Till....... you open the hood and see the 500cube Caddy sitting there.

"I wanted more POWER" !!!!!!

The original block (421)is lying outside in the rain....How can these snoozers be helped??????

As one who has built a 500+ cube Caddy, I am honor bound to defend the type. Up to the 450-500 HP level, they are cheaper to build than a BBC if you include the cost of the core engine, they are a lot lighter than the Chev and as a bonus, if you dress one up to look like a 396 and put it in your 68 SS El Camino, it really pisses off the Chevy crowd. :D

BTW, Paul's statement is true. Not just for pontiac, but for everything except Ford and maybe Mopar. Some people do still have the fortitude and cash to stick with pontiac at the highest levels of performance, but on paper, it makes no sense. Then again, owning any of the collectible cars makes no sense on paper tongue.gif

I cant remember what it was called but it looked almost exactly like a 69 chevelle except the front nose was different with a split pontiac style grille and it was powered by a 396? I believe that was the badge on the side. so not only did they come chevy powered in canada they came chevy styled!Anyone seen this and can you remind me of the cars name?

Taking nothing away from the other engine manufacturers but I want my Pontiac. Yes you could build a brand x to go just as fast (and faster in many cases) for the same money but then I would be just like everyone else, a cookie cutter car/engine. If I were to stand out in the pits and the announcer said will the guy with the Crowmarrow please come to the timing tower I would be all but alone. When I hear people talk about my GP there is no question WHICH GP they are talking about. At the speed shop people say, “there is that guy with the big blue GP” and his friend would say, “You mean the one at the track?” I also love it when two guys are walking up to my car and you can hear one say to the other “most be a big block chevy to run like that” and to see their faces when they are greeted with a Pontiac v8 in between the rails….and no NOS too boot. Yea I could have gone the easy way, but half the fun is in the challenge and the other half is watching the reactions when they see it is all Pontiac.

Another reason there are non-Pontiac engines is the California ARB. The '77 trans am couldn't pass the Cali smog test with the pontiac so they stuffed in the old 403. I had one for awhile. The 403 would bark the tires on a cold night hitting second. TH400 trans. Out of wind at 4500RPM. Main webbing looked like swiss cheese. "Weight savings".

Rick, sorry. I was mistaken. It had to have been a 350 as it was totally stock. One other note. After the rebuild and new cat, (single exhaust), it was so clean that the smog station monkey did not believe the readings were valid and re-ran the test.

I can respect almost anyone's point of view as long as they can respect other's. That being said, I'll admit that my casting aspersions on Don's capabilities was not the right thing to do. I'm sorry for that. However, I will stand by my other comments as his attitude towards anything different is pathetic. I consider things like spitting and similar actions to be child-like at best. Last time I checked, A body's aren't all the same. Andrew wanted a GTO, not a Chevelle, with a killer big block Chevy, that is what he built. It is a matter of practicality, economics and other reasons. I don't see why it (or ANY other non-Pontiac powered Pontiac) is a lesser car because it has a Chevy engine in it. I am a car guy, that means I like cars, pretty much without regard to what brand they are or how they are powered. I tend to like Pontiacs more, because of brand loyalty, familiarity, styling and becuase they are less mainstream, but that doesn't mean I can't like other cars or combinations thereof. As far as I'm concerned, people like Don who would spit on a car becuase he didn't like the engine under the hood are not and cannot be true car guys. Maybe I'm missing something but this is a Pontiac site for the owners to enjoy. The general public didn't have much to do with what went in what for motors. Pontiac built cars and some ta's had other motors for several reasons and this is a great site for information.It should remain for the restoration indivduals at minimum.Tahnk you.
