I installed an electric Mezierie water pump on my 65 LeMans. The Alt belt now hits the pump motor housing. I installed the 70 style alt bracket to lower the alt but it still hits. Can I install an underdrive pulley on the crank to solve this problem? Any other suggestions?

I was not able to find any factory bracket to work, even with a reduction pulley on the crank. I ended up fabricating my setup to get the clearance

Tim,

Check out the BOP alternator bracket. It is very rigid and has a wide range of adjustment. In addition, it will locate in 3 different positions on the face of the head making it extremely versatile. I am confident it will work with your setup. You can check it out on the BOP webpage. Try it, If you're not satisfied you can return it.

I have a Meziere pump on my 64 Tempest. I used a 70 GTO alternator bracket and small crank pulley. I don't remember the diameter of the pulley, but I can measure it if you like. I kept the standard sized pulley on the alternator so it would charge better. The engine has turned 7000 RPM and the belt has not been a problem.

Keep in mind that reducing the size of the crank pulley will reduce the shaft speed of the alternator, everything else being equal. Most OEM alternators "CUT IN" at about 1000 RPM shaft speed, that is to simply say, they will not charge the battery below this speed. To provide enough power to run your electrical system without draining your battery at idle, you need to have approximately 1500 RPM shaft speed.

Spotts Performance has the correct bracket to use with the Mezierie pump. Call Paul, he will know what you need. http://www.spottsperformance.com

I can vouch for the BOP bracket working (71 Lemans), the unit Butler sells wouldn't work on my year. I have heard the the brackets from a NON power steering car will work also.

Thanks for all the responses. I have found through my resurch that the non AC crank pulley is 7-1/4" OD and I have the AC pulley that measures 8". I located a used non AC pulley at the Goat Farm for $25.00, verses $60.00 for a new bracket. I am hoping the additional 3/8" clearance using the smaller pulley will do the trick. I am using the 70 GTO non AC alt bracket and it almost clears but not quite. If it still doesn't work with the smaller pulley I will give the BOP pulley a try.
