I have read that some of the early 66 GTO's came with the white shifter nob instead of the black one. How do can this be determined. on my billing invoice the serial number is 209446. How can you determine if this is a late year model or an early one. Appreciate any help.

Hi, records were not kept of ever single color or part that would have been used, chances are there would never be any way to tell for sure what color was on your 66 when it was brand new. All the catalogs I have(the old ones from Pontiac, I am talking) show the 66 GTO and/or Lemans 3 and 4 speed shift knobs to be black in color. That would not mean to say it could NOT have been white or a left over knob, perhaps. Maybe somebody changed it when they bought the car as a used car later in the 70s or maybe they just liked a white one better. Rumors abound about all kinds of parts being used on the "first built" cars that were left overs from the previous model year, I even saw a 65 GTO once at a car show(all pontiac) and it had a 64 engine in it, the owner swore up and down, the enging was 100% original to his car and that his 65 was one of the first ones built and the factory was using up the left over 64 engine blocks. I did not want to argue with the guy :confused: but that, to me is a bit of a stretch, your knob question, however is open to debate or opinion.
