Broken off choke tubes.

I have a carter AFB and the choke tubes have broken off flush with the manifold. How do I remove the part left in the manifold? Do I need to remove the manifold to do it?

You shouldn't have to remove those tubes inside the manifold. Just get new outer tubes. PY part #rpe390a. They plug into the inner tubes.

I know what you're talking about: the narrow portion of the choke tubes have corrode welded themselves inside the tubes that are integral with the manifold. I have one busted just like yours. Couple of routes: soak the thing liberally in WD-40, Liquid Wrench, etc. Find an E-Z out that'll fit into the hole left by the broken choke tube and try gently twisting it to break the "weld". OR, try drilling it out....you'll have to be very careful you don't end up drilling through the manifold tube. OR, if you need a new carb and you can handle a bit of non-stock-ness...get one of the Edelbrock Performer carbs with the electric choke and forget the choke tubes altogether. I know that Edelbrock sells the electric choke as a seperate accessory and it appears identical in size, shape and fit to the stock unit..I just don't know if the bracket off the back will work on an old AFB. Well, that's my 2 cents worth....hope there's something to get you started.

This is a real common problem and even 20 years ago it was for me, I tried to drill and WD-40 but no luck, I ended up drilling through one of my the inner tubes and ended up with an exhaust leak under the hood. I replaced the entire manifold and when I got it, there was a 4bbl carb already on it with both tubes still 100% intact, I removed the carb and rebuilt it WOTHOUT touching the tubes AT ALL except to replace that rubber hose on the one tube.
It was a lot of extra work but those tubes are a just a total pain when they're all rusted in place for 30+ years. JMO.
