My rebuilt engine burns oil like crazy

I am admittedly an amature at this stuff so maybe one of you can help me out. I recently put my pontiac 400 back together started from the ground up. I cannot think of any step that I didn't do right but now my engine is consuming oil like a stoner with munchies. I drove it 500 miles give or take and all of a sudden I lost oil presure.
I drained the oilpan thinking maybe the pickup tube had dislodged itself after I hit a big bump in the road. there are no leaks that could account for being 5 quarts low on oil. the car smokes when it runs, its a stinky mess. I pulled out the spark plugs and no oil film on them but the tops of the pistons have a black coating of burned oil. I suspected that maybe I messed up when I put the rings on the piston particularly the oil ring at the bottom. The car runs great.
I did put an HEI distributor in this car and one wierd thing is that it will not stay running if I connect the vaccumm advance hose the the distributor. Probably two seperate problems but this is what I am dealing with at this time. oh and it runs at 190 degrees temp with a 165 degree thermostat, 4-core radiator, and an aftermarket 16" electrical fan. any ideas on all of this? please E-mail me with your suggestions [email protected]

Daniel a few guesses. Did you bore the motor and replace the pistons? Putting new rings in a wore out engine wont help. #2 Did you put the rings in correctly? Meaning there is a top and bottom to rings. Also correct rings in the right piston grove? Do a compression test and see if numbers are close if not probably one of the above is wrong.
