I recently bought a new distributor and a crane fireball ignition. I bought it from Jim Butler. The distributor did not have a vacuum advance with it. Is one needed with the crane ignition system?

Depends on what your goal with your car is.
If you´ll run with the pedal to the metal all day long it might not matter.
If you want driveabilty and a smooth running and fuel effective engine you should use the vacuum advance.
Not to mention saving your cooling system from working overtime.
