Car transporters operating in interstate commerce generally should be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and have a USDOT number. If you have the USDOT number of the company (or its name) you can go to www.safersys.org and look up information such as the driver and vehicle out-of-service rates and determine who insures the company. This information can help you make a decision about the company, based on its safety record.

The company you select to transport your car should also have cargo coverage. The cargo insurance coverage can also be verified up through www.safersys.org. FMCSA only requires $5000 coverage, and that will be the amount shown on the website, if coverage exists. The company may actually have higher levels of coverage. Remember to request a certificate of insurance! Use the “Carrier Snapshot” option at www.safersys.org to start your search.
