HELP! 403 timing chain & mechanical fuel pump

Hi everyone,


I have a bit of a problem. REALLY long story short, is that I am getting rid of my electric fuel pump setup and trying to go back to mechanical on my 79TA. I did a lot of work to the motor so it's got around 400HP which caused me to get a Double Roller chain and go with a Electric fuel pump since the chain blocks a mechanical pump.

I've had nothing but problems with the electric since (all 3 of them!!!), so my question is this...Is there anyone out there that makes a single roller chain that will hold up to the extra horsepower? Also, where can I find a good mechanical fuel pump that will fit with the chain?

I went to Mondellos site, and they make both, but the cost is over $500, so thats out of my budget for now. Can anyone PLEASE help me?

heavy duty chain can handle this load with a mechanical pump. Olds made a heavy duty chain that worked with a mechanical pump. Google olds for more info.

Thanks, but I need a little more help than that. I tried Googling, but there was nothing specific. I was hoping that someone out there might know where to get them without having to search the net.

Searched 'olds timing chain': All Olds timing gears will interchange. Big-block chains are beefier than the small-blocks. no mention of fuel pump problems with stock chains from Big block, which I am sure you know is not a 403.

Ive got a stock mechanical pump in my olds 455 with a roller chain. I didnt have any problems or even heard of people having any. I dont remember what brand roller chain I got, but I ordered it from Terry at FCR performance. He specializes in 403's you may want to give him a shout.

I can't understand why the double chain prevented you from using a mechanical pump. I put a Cloyes True Roller in the 403 in my 79 Trans Am years ago and the stock pump bolted right back on. You might try a Cloyes chain because I know that combination works.
