the parts place - repo wood wheel 67

I got the wood wheel in on trade - new in the parts place box
also came with the pot metal center, emblem and horn collar

so, i figured i'd try to put it on my 67

'the parts place' is horrible

i've called 5 or 6 times trying to get an operator that isn't female, and/or one that knows what a 1967 GTO is


a simple question - 'what else do i need to install this on my car?'
Noone can help - a week later i ended up sending a picture to them so they could tell me what i still need.
So, evidently i need a horn contact AND parts they don't sell!

They sell a repo GTO wheel and none of the bolts or screws to connect all their separate parts together?
Their repo wheel isn't like the original - the horn collar isn't attached to the wheel (as i think originals are)
So, they have a separate horn collar....i guess mounts somehow to the wheel (part i don't have yet)

I've been to lowes twice and tried every screw in the hardware drawers, and can't get a single one to match any of the parts i have

how ridiculous is that?
They sell a very nice wood wheel - but not a single bolt or screw to put it all together?
How do they expect someone to ever find the exact length screw to mount them - and that's a hell of a headache!

Wishing i hadn't undertaken this project - although the wheel looks great!

the parts place is a joke, they sell crap, they lie in their ads, they dont ship what you paid for. and the owner is very rude.

agreed - noone on the phone was very nice
and all were disgruntled that i couldn't tell them exactly what i needed in the catalog - without their help

since it isn't a stock part - i had no idea what was still needed



I ordered a few small things from them while i was on the phone - small stuff got shipped and the main part i wanted was backordered
They shipped my small stuff and cancelled the order for a large part - without informing me (****ty, i should have called PY in the first place)



anyways - anyone know if this is a normal production wood wheel?
As in, does PY carry this same reproduction? Or is this unique to the parts place?

I'd much rather order the remaining parts from PY (and maybe they even have an installation kit!)

I have the Parts Place repo '67 wood wheel ready to install in my car. I too had the same questions about bolts/screws/etc. and the people at Parts Place could/would only help by saying the fasteners were all hardware store items...

The original horn collar was attached to the wheel using screws, just like the repop, although the original collar was metal, not plastic.

Judging by the pics you posted all you need is the horn switch, which is $39 from Parts Place. I think Ames and PY sell it as well. You may also need a horn contact kit for the part where the cancel cam goes through the wheel hub. That's like $5 from PY.

The screws that hold the metal horn button to the horn switch are METRIC! I looked through every bin at the local ACE hardware store never even dreaming that would be the case. Sorry I can't remember the size, the guy at the store picked it out right away, anyway.

You'll need some self-tapping screws to attach the plastic collar to the back of the steering wheel. You can get those at the hardware store, make sure they are not too big or the holes will crack.

The plastic ring screws to the back of the wheel. The $39 horn contact screws to the horn ring, and then that assembly is held on by the steering column bolt. Play wiith the parts a little and it will become obvious how they go together. You may want to look at the service manual, there's a decent diagram in there.

it isn't making much sense without the horn switch - which i guess i need to nab (i'll get it from PY)


that's pissing me off - those fockers selling a 'complete repo 67 wood wheel'
they told me the same thing - go to any hardware store
i've been to lowes twice and they don't have anything - guess i'll have to find a bigger place


at least knowing they're metric will help (cut down the drawers in half)

Good luck, I can't wait to get my wheel into the car.

I got my screws from the corner Ace Hardware store. The guy there was really helpful.

After you get the horn switch then it's kind of a puzzle to figure out which way that thing is supposed to mount. There's a little tab on it that has to point kind of down and to the right (it can only mount a few different ways so that's not hard) and fit into a spot on the plastic ring and then the side of the switch that is all metal should face you when installed in the horn button.

There is an exploded line drawing in the shop manual & also in the parts book. In additiona The GTO Restoration Guide also has an view of how all these parts fit together. Agree it should have come with the screws if they are metric. It's because the parts are made overseas; & unless you specify otherwise, they use metric to size everything, reproduction, including the fastners. I am sure that the original screws from 1967 were not metric.

I had to get some small self-tapping screws to do my TPP wood wheel in my '65. Couldn't find anything else that would fit.
