Al - I have a 67 LeMans with the 3-spoke energy absorbing steering wheel. It's the original, but it's cracked all over the place. Do you fix these as well? thanks.

I am thinking of getting it re-done in a wood finish to match the Walnut trim on the dash. Can you do this????

Ron, Many of the wood wheels appear to only need a refinishing as apposed to a remolding. I have never seen a refinish that looks original. They all are various versions of antique finishes and look ok but not original and they also will not last as long. I suppose if someone was extremely patient and talented, they could literally etch the grain back into an original wheel with some type of sharp object but keep in mind, the wheel is 40 years old and will still be prone to cracks. Our process is a remolding process. The grain is part of the mold. After being molded the wheel is stained and then clear coated to protect the stain from wearing off.

The darker stain is for 68-70 Sport wheels. The lighter stain is consistant with the 65-67 wood wheels. Over the years, we have seen original variations of both making it impossible to say a certain shade was 100% correct for a certain year.

Jeff, We have been doing these wheels for almost 20 years now. To date, we are fairly confident that not one of these wheels has ever cracked. If you see a nice original looking wood wheel at a show, it is either a very rare NOS find or our remold process.

Ian, we looked into making a mold for the deluxe wheels. It is much more complicated and given that you need 1 mold for each year deluxe wheel, the project was scrapped. If your deluxe wheel isn't too badly cracked, I would recommend using a product called PC7. It is a plastic filler. You fill the
crack(s) and then sand it like bondo, Prime and then repaint the wheel.

Jeff, The service is only for the wood rim. If the spokes are bad, it is not worth restoring. It's cheaper to just buy the entire repro wheel. You can try using paint remover and some very fine steel wool to see if the satin chrome is still good.

If you are looking to get yours refinished, just make sure the spokes are excellent. We don't fix the spokes....Just the woodgrain. If that is the case, you can send it in and have it redone. But do it soon because we're probably going to discontinue this service at the end of 2015.

PY (now Max Performance) makes reproduction 1969-1970 wood wheels with woodgrain that looks like the pics earlier in this topic. However, we're currently out of stock. Once in stock, you can ask Ames, NPD, OPG etc specifically for the 'PY' version. If you don't ask, you may get the Parts Place version.

Parts Place makes the same wheel as well. The spokes and woodgrain don't look as original as ours but would be fine on a 'driven' car with an owner that isn't a real originality fanatic. ;)

Why are you discontinuing this service, seems like a good deal for everyone. What will people do after 2015? You talk about the 69-70 wheel is it the same depth as original, and how does it compare to the 68. I see the 68 is a real nice repo but a bit shallower, and last, can I get a 68 or 69 wheel chromed before the wood/plastic is applied, would like to run smaller but still original look on a 65.
