Pontiac 400 in fox body mustang??

Anyone ever put a pontiac engine in one before? I've got a mustang sitting around I can't seem to get rid of so I was thinking what the heck drop a decent engine in it and keep it for a beater drag car.

Main thing I wonder about is what to do for headers?

I have never seen one but it would be cool. Im sure it would fit without a problem, I have seen them with BBC's. I think there are some shorty headers available for Pontiac engines now.......those would probably be the best bet. No way to know if they will fit or not until you try it.

It definitely has been done. What are you using for heads? To make it fit, use a motor plate and then a turbo 400 will bolt in using the factory trans crossmember. The hard part will be the headers, but if you have roundport heads I might let go a set of custom headers that will work for you. Let me know.

yes it is an easy swap but there is some fabrication involved. you could adapt some motor mounts but a motor plate is easier. the ekhaust i used on the first motor was a set of second-gen. firebird round port headers that i modified but it might have been easier to build some fron scratch like i did on the second set. see my sig. for results of the first motor install.

Isn't the Fairmont and Mustang fox bodies? In other words, they would be the same under the hood?

'monts and stangs are fox bodies, but not identical.
shock towers are a little different, wheelbase, etc.
the fenders actually interchange, believe it or not!

I guess putting the Fairmont front on a mustang would improve the fox body mustang's looks! But then, I haven't figured out why the ford crowd thinks they can't build a fairmont instead of 'stangs. Kinda like having an F body and a/ g body gm cars and avoiding the g bodies:confused:

plenty of guys build monts and other fox alternates.
my employee's brother has a 10 second daily driiven ltd lx with an eaton blown 5 liter in it.
that car has made the magazines several times. it's well known.

Seems like here no one building a ford wants anything that isn't a fox body Mustang body. I have built 1 Fairmont with a 4" crank in a winsor 351 with the early alum. Ford gt heads and it was alot of fun, but like to have never been able to sell it. Sure was fun embarrassing the spinning mustang's though. The guy who bought it took the engine out and put it in a mustang I enjoyed beating. The idiot junked the body and it was a perfect rustfree no dings of any sort body! White with a perfect shape blue interior.

Steve C. could probably give some insight on this. One of his engines is in his buddy's Fairmont which I think is similar to a Fox chassis.

Interesting idea. Actually, I have a nice Mustang coupe/notchback (trunk) 4-cyl that would do nicely. Maybe put the 428 with 061 heads that will be my next build in that instead of the 69 GTO - - nah, scratch that! LOL

I also have had an interest in this for 2 reasons -

weight and the inventory of mustangs that have been highly modified and available as rollers is staggering. Not too mention for a very reasonable price.

The biggest issue to sort out would where does the Pontiac get placed in the engine bay? ( front to back)

Prob weigh in around 3000 lbs. My vote is a 505/glide combo.

i just pulled my procharged, road race ready 93 LX outta storage last weekend after a coupla years and took it out for a warm up ride...forgot how fun that thing is; felt like a go-cart compared to my TA.
