hey guys,
great site, lots of very helpful info.
I just purchased a 68 Firebird with a 350 ls1/ 4speed California car. With help from oldblueponcho (good guy) i got a 75 400 thats goin into it and bring it back to what it should be.
****,I have alot to learn, i will have to start a new thread as I am going to need alot of advise on the 400 rebuilt/header/swap (FIRST 1) but i will also try the search button as i am sure many many peeps have done this before.
all the best in 07

Congrats on the car purchase. I went the other way on my 68 lemans convert by putting in a 6.0 4l80e out of a suburban. To each his own . Enjoy the car and the swap. Jim M.

I just bought a 68 that came with a 77 400 (not in the car) but it has motor mounts for a chevy currently welded to the subframe. Not sure which way I am going to go yet. The 400 block is a 500577 casting (not very desirable apparently). Debating if I should look for another 400 block or just put one of the 3 chevy engines I have in the car.

hey acenewman,
what i did was put an ad in the local rag looking for a Pontiac 400 and i got quite a few calls, i found a 68 400 wz /#62 heads for $800 the engine has 10k balanced and blue printed but who knows how true that is.

The 400 block is a 500577 casting (not very desirable apparently).

Better check those numbers again. The only chevy 400 casting numbers are:

330817
3951509
3951511

I also believe that the denegration of the 400 block is highly overrated and lacks any real proof that one casting is better than another.

Any of the ls engines makes a great addition to an older car. Hey, they came in late model F'birds so they can't be all bad.

I believe the 500577 casting # he is refering to is a 76 Pontiac 400

My mistake. I guess I read the title and and focused on chevy for some reason.
