..2005 GTO LS6 motor in a 72 Trans Am?..

How hard would it be to put a 05 or 06 GTO LS6 motor w/ 6speed transmission, wiring harness, and computer brain in a 72 Trans Am with A/C?

Would I have to cut or weld something? What all would have to be done?

Tell me it would not be nice having a 6 speed, fuel injection, and 400 horses.....As long as you could do it without jacking up the car I think it would be sick as hell!

I have no clue what I am doing or how to do this and would appreciate the advice!

its gonna be alot of work and probably a good bit of fabrication to make it all work correctly
you will have to make motor mounts (they might make them) may have to modify your floor pan, etc
just think if a part that is designed to fit usually has to be modified to fit correctly, something thats not designed to fit will probably require quite a bit of fabrication and "massaging"

Not true. motor mounts are being made for this swap as are headers to fit f-body and a-body cars with the ls-x engines. The transtunnel will have to be opened up. It not as big a deal as some make it out to be. Year One offers complete LS1 engine and transmission mounting kits for '67-69 and '70-81 Camaros. The kits include engine mounts, a transmission crossmember, and transmission mount. Kits are available for both 4L60-E automatic transmissions or T-56 six-speed transmissions and for cars using the OEM steering or Fourth-Gen F-body rack-and-pinion conversions. These kits should also work with Firebirds.

if you plan on using the factory a/c compressor location you will have to notch and rebox the frame (not a big deal). brp also makes a kit with mounts for an lsx engine into a second gen. some conversion kits out there requires you to mod the oil pan (brp doesn't). im using slightly modded 4th gen pacesetters for headers. you will need to get an f-body oil pan, windage tray, dipstick and tube as the gto pan is a front sump. you really need to go over to ls1tech.com and look in the conversions and hybrids section, theres alot of guys doing this kind of stuff and are very helpful. as far as i know nobody is yet making a rack and pinion setup for the second gen unless you go with an aftermarket subframe, which makes everything easier, but expensive

My corvette with that set up gets around 29mpg on the hwy.

Hardly. You'll probabaly drive the car more often and for longer distances therefore requiring just as many fuel stops. I do.

If I ever run across an early 2nd gen (flat window only) base Bird, I would do a Formula clone with this engine in a second! In this day, I would think twice about cutting a "real" TA or Formula 400 however.

BTW, the 05/06 Holden GTO has a LS2, not a LS6 (minor point... we know what you meant).

Much of it depends on Your ability to do thework, or your ability to pay for someone to do the work.

It's not that hard. They sell sub frames that will accept LSX engines. You can get wiring harness from painless and computers from any GM junkyard and plug it in and have it tuned.

You should call the guys over at ATS there web page is www.t56kit.com and there number is 702-245-6305. They are great guys and I believe they will have what you need to complete the switch if not they will point you in the right direction.

This will sound odd and old school but look at an Aluminum Big Block. They are as cheap as the LSX engines. And Beaucoup cooler.
