Nu Chrome - Beware

I sent in a set of '67 headlight bezels and a '70 bumper. All nice Southern parts with fading. I eventually got the bezels back. One had to go through plating multiple times.

Their website, voicemail and my email confirmtion all promise 4 week turn around. It has been 4 months. Still no bumper. It has had to go through chroming 4 times. I have been promised multiple ship dates. None have come to fruition and no one bothered to call to notify it hadn't been shipped.

How can a company that does this as their business survive, having to rechrome multiple times?

I was billed in full over a month ago. (Credit card fraud) I was promised yesterday it would be shipped overnight and I could call today for the tracking number. Called today - back in chroming and, as usual, I can't get anyone to call me back.

No one responds to your emails after they have the parts. They tell you everytime you call that they will call back and never do.

Check them out on the Massachusettes Better Business Bureau website - 32 complaints in 36 months with 30 unresponded to.

This was an attempt to keep the business local. This car has been out of commission 4 months waiting for this bumper. The classic car season here in New England is very short.

This is my story, sad but true.....don't let the next fool be you.

Everyone I know ( me included ) has had issues with them. Jack talks a good game but never delivers.

Did you eventually get your stuff? At this point, I have a strong suspicion that my bumper was sold to someone else (it was near perfect with minor fading when it went in) and they don't have anything to ship me.

I filed a complaint with Mass BBB and then saw their history. I'm sure that was a waste of time.

I just used J&J Bumpers in Pawtucket RI for my rear '65 bumper. Turn-around was about 6 weeks, which they said, and they did a great job. I would use them again, no problem with telephone contacts.

I filed a complaint with Mass BBB and then saw their history. I'm sure that was a waste of time.

I did get my stuff as it was through a body shop. When they bolted the rear bumper on the car, the left side fit fine but the right side was a foot away from the body. (It was straight when it went out.) We sent it back and it came back better but it was not good. Jack told me to get a straight core, I did and it when came back, (they had lost it for a while too) I unwrapped it in front of Jack and it looked like the Atlantic Ocean.

Jack copped a bit of an attitude and said "Oh, you want SHOW CHROME!" I said no, I just wanted a bumper rechromed right. He brought it back and I never put it on the car. It took about 3 years from start to finish.

They "lost" every piece of chrome for my Uncle's car. He ended up suing them and won. STAY AWAY!

so why dont you wussys just step to him and bitch slap the little punk..take his whole shop..thats how we do things out west..sad that people do this, but you let him get away with it..bbb does squat..i'd say pay him a "visit", and "re-negotiate the contract in a positive, prejudicial manner"...:eek:

Faxed the a copy of BBB complaint, then started contacting all of the events on their show schedule.
Got my bumper back.
It has a weird kind of blackish tint to it, there's a dent in it that will be covered by the lisence plate, but still... and am having a bitch of a time getting it lined up. Get one side right and it forces the other side out of wack, low and away. It's never going back there either way. I am done!!

They probally ruined it. Let me know if your headlight bezels still have the detail between the top & bottem bucket. Probally not. Good luck. They are a huge scam. The employees sleep at where they work. Mostly Immagrants!! THATS A FACT!!!!!!!

The blackish tint is because they are using a different chrome. There are 2 types:

1st is Tri-valent chrome (what you have) This is a very dark almost black looking chrome. Made for indoor use and is not blue ish. Very low EPA standards.

2nd is Hex-a-valent chrome what automotive industry used in the day. This is very bright and has a blue ish tint. Often referred to as "decorative " chrome. This type of chrome is very hazardous to the environment therefore the EPA is very restrictive!! Not to mention expensive. Any hex chrome plating tank large enough to do a bumper need ventilation hood called a scrubber. This is to clean & reclaim fumes before entering the atmosphere. Cost of up to 250,000.00.

That is why your bumper looks dark. It is less expensive to operate. And when you do such ****ty work as they do, you need to keep costs down I guess.
How much were your bezels to do? If you dont mind my asking.

Also It is not Jacks fault enterily he is just a dumbasssalesman.!!!!!!!
When you give him parts at shows or swaps he probaly says under his breath "good luck getting that back".

The headlight bezels were $200 each.

That was the original quote and when they called me to tell me they received the parts, they wanted $250. These were nice parts with just fading so I held them to the $200.

They came out fine, The detail is there, as is the fit. There is one area that you can see has been worked and is not perfect but they sent it to me seperately for my approval and, considering the time I had involved, I accepted it. I could at least get one car back together.

These do NOT appear as black as the bumper.

there is a lot of good info in No67GTO's post.However,if chrome3(tri-valent) is properly applied,there won't be too terribly much difference color-wise unless the part is compared side by side to chrome6(hexavalent)I did a 57 chevy in chrome3(knowingly)from a reputable plater,had the car at many car shows,and no one ever commented about it.The key words here are PROPERLY APPLIED.

My friend spent $4000 getting stuff chromed for his project car. It was sent to his house when he was in Iraq. When he finally saw it, it was crap. I saw it just the other day...really terrible quality. Looks like they did no prep work at all...there is a big flaked off rusty spot on the bumper, and it's still in the packaging they shipped it in. Bogus.
