Bucket seat chrome piping quality...........

I have tried the plastic chrome seat trim (bolsters & seatbacks) from three different vendors, including our host, w/ very unsatisfactory results, concluding that it is probably manufactured by the same company. The chrome wrap wrinkles almost immediately and then the excessive adhesive inside the "C" shaped tubing runs down the seatbacks when heated by the summer sun :mad:.

Has any Forum member found a suitable product that doesn't exhibit these problems?

I think part of the problem is that most are selling what was actually a door edge molding & not designed to make the sharp bends needed to use them for our seat trim.

While I haven't had them out in the hot sun yet, the kit I got from The Parts Place seems to be better than most others I've seen, it made the bends easily & was actually a wider profile than the other kits trim pieces.

Wow that is just terrible,others must have bought this chrome plastic edging. I was going to look at the chrome ends i need 2, what timing just getting ready to leave for Carlisle.

Where did you buy that crap from?? I've never had that happen, and I've used the door edge piping for my seats that you buy at PepBoys.

Like Nickv, ive bought the same stuff from Autozone, had mine on for 9 yrs now, the only issue i have is if im taking the seats in and out, some of the ends come loose, then i use a really small dab of super glue and that seems to work.

Main issue is the stuff is alot smaller than orginial, but it does look better than the old dull stuff................so far everything thing has stayed on good, except the pass lower seat, whenever someone sits on that seat it always pops off in back.

Im looking into taking my old stuff and see if i can get it rechromed by one of those places that rechrome the dash.

You would think with all the stuff they repo, this would be easy.............guess not.

I have restored and sold in excess of 20 pairs of bucket seats. I found that by far they sell much faster for a better price with new mdls. I have tried all the mouldings avialable and I found they all fit the same. If you go to your automotive paint store you can buy a roll of door edge guard for 20.00 I belive it will do 2 cars or 4 seats. The manfacture of the moulding is protecto trim.I have found also shelf life is a big issue, if its been on the shelf for two years it will probably fail. Now for the secret, take and shave down the bead on the seat trim till it is level, inside and out this will reduce the thickness and the moulding will slide on and stay on. You can do this with a utility knife or if you are carefull you can use a die grinder or roloc disc. Try it it looks great, good luck

Thanks for the feedback and the suggestions for alternatives. I will try the commonly available chrome door edge moulding, at least it isn't full of sticky glue.

There's an interior supply store near you. It's by the S. El Monte High School on Durfee Ave. I'll get the address and name in the morning. They sell to dealers, but if you bring cash and will call it, you get their price.

They have yards of materials and everything from set belt webbing to headliner material. You could go down there and check what tubing that they have.

You could also call, I'm always near that area and we could have lunch and check it out. My upholsteror is Raul's Upholstery and Trim in Ontario. He's on Holt/Bonview in Ontario. You can can call and ask him for some good advice. He always has some nice cars, boats, etc there for work. I'm sure he's run into the tubing issues that you have.

I replaced the pictured chrome piping w/ door edge guard intended for trucks (?), purchased @ Kragen. Looks great now, and time will tell if the adhesive will run out when the interior is super-heated by the summer sun.
