wtb: breather tube

I need a metal breather tube - the one that comes out of the valve cover, makes a 90, and goes into the air breather. thanks.

They are not all the same. I don't know what is different about them for various applications, but I've got a GTO and a couple of Formulas and they aren't the same part.

I've always wondered WHY there were SO MANY variations on this part? :confused:

Logically speaking,you'd think that 1 or 2 different styles would cover ALL applications.

Not including non pontiac and the 301's, I am going to say 3. 1970-mid 71 short offset, 71-76 long offset, 77-79 W72 no offset. I am pretty sure of the 70-76 era, MRW72 can clarify further.

Sorry, I thought they were all about the same.

It's going on a 1979 trans am with a 400 engine. I have a breather/shaker scoop that I believe came from an earlier trans am, I can take pictures of it if that will help.

A 3/4 shot over the passenger valve cover with the air cleaner centered will almost certainly identify the breather tube needed.

motor is apart :( This is what the engine compartment currently looks like. Might have to pursue this when the engine is back together.

Hard to tell because I can't see the drop in the base, but it looks like the air cleaner may not be for an F body.

Looks like you have a 301 air filter housing there.

Take a picture of the inside where filter sits WITHOUT the lid.

That should tell us.

FYI: The 67-75 Pontiac Firebird parts catalog lists 28 different part #'s/variations of the valve cover breather tube. (and that's only ONE model!)

You may need to have the engine assembled with the intake and carburetor installed to know for sure which tube will fit. I think that I have a couple, but not sure which vehicle/engine they fit. You can run some type of non-metallic hose in the interim and visit one of the local Pontiac shows to see what fits your set up.
