I have a 67 Firebird, 400/4spd, that I bought with an almost complete interior that i will keep pretty stock, but it didnt have a trans and the motor is pretty much just a long block 400, non numbers matching... My original plan was to get a tremec 5 spd and build the 400, looking for in the neighbohood of 500 HP, and do all of the global west suspension, SSBC brakes, all the good stuff to make the car fun to drive. I know nothing about putting an LS motor into the car, but its beginning to sound like a more cost effective, reliable, way to go. Any thoughts on which motor, and who to talk to in southern california about making the change, pros / cons, difference in cost, etc. Thanks in advance

My E-headed 400 with Richmond 5 speed runs like a stripped a$$ ape and reliable as any new engine, it doesn't get the milage of an ls engine but it runs 42 miles every day for over three years now with 0 problems. The money spent buying the ls, building it and installing it would cost more then building the engine that went in the car. I've heard the Tremec is a bolt in which I didn't know until after the Richmond was purchased. I like the rail shifting trans idea better then the sloppy linkage on the side thing. The richmond allowed me to run a 2:56.1 gear out back. Ask fantom poncho ( a member on this board that has gone for a ride in my car)what this car does a 70 MPH when it is shifted into 3rd gear out of 5th. The 400 is KB hypereutectics E-heads and a mild hyd roller. I'd put its dependability up against any engine out there.

To get an idea of what is involved with installing a LS engine in a Pontiac, read b-mans post Taking the plunge: LS3 into 64 Tempest.
