I swapped distributors a couple of weeks ago and managed to drop it in incorrectly. I hit the key and the engine turned over a time or two, spit gas out of the carb and then made quite the metallic racket. I climbed out, pulled the positive wire off of the battery and went upstairs to supper. A few days later I jacked the car up and removed the starter, fully expecting to find some visible damage to something. I pulled my RobbMc starter down and all seemed normal with it. So I re-installed it. It did nothing but click. I dropped it in a box Monday and sent it back to RobbMc with a description of what I'd done. I got an email this morning saying it was ready and that they needed $32 to cover the repair and the shipping!
Here's the email......
"Your starter has been repaired and is ready to ship. We replaced the broken stationary and planetary gears in the gear reduction assembly ($16). We also added a steel band to the stationary gear to give it a little more strength (no charge). We also knurled the clamp ring to reduce the chance of the solenoid rotating out of position (no charge). We also installed better clamp ring bolts (no charge). After assembly, we loaded tested the starter.
Shipping is $16. So the total is $32"
This is on an approx 6 year old starter. I'm blown away.
