Restore a heater box service?

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a vendor that can restore a 69 GTO heater box? I know folks usually do this themselves... but apparently I would need to drill out the spot welds and then reweld it back together... If someone can restore it for me I might take that route.

Of course shipping this thing could add significant expense - so ideally someone in socal.

I have also been thinking of just stopping by the local welding place to see if they could do it - but I assume the reweld needs to be somewhat air tight.... did the factory use a sealer or does the weld run all along the seam?

I've not heard of anyone doing restorations on heater boxes. I do know that the seal kit for mine was no where near correct. I just redid the heater box for my 66 last month. No one probably does it because no one makes the correct seals to do it the right way. Flimsy foam doesn't cut it to seal the box to the firewall inside. Even the heater core gasket where the pipes come thru the firewall is no where near correct. All that you can get is a thin gasket the same shape as the original to seal the firewall hole, but there is no thickness to it so the the core can push the gasket to keep it sealed.

Mike Spizziri at PY asked REM if they wanted to see my original core to firewall seal and make one that is correct. I guess they didn't care to, as they never contacted Mike or me.

Have you seen AMES Part # P120M? From the pic in their catalog it looks like it has some thickness to it. Looks pretty similar to the original actually.... Havent' purchased it yet. I agree the seal in the kit is lame.
