Ive spent ALOT of money with Ames over the last year. Last week I call to order a machine finish dash trim insert (was not stock for 69 but they have them in the aftermarket). Guy answers the phone, and I start asking some questions about the part because its not pictured in the catalog and the description is very vague. I ask if its aluminum or vinyl. Guy on phone says for that price ($72 or so) I would say aluminum. I said, well for $72 I want to be sure. So he tells me he will go look for one and see. I wait on the phone for a few minutes patiently because I figure it could take a good 5 mins or so to locate. After about 3 minutes he comes back and says "hell man I cant find it, I dont even really know what Im looking for". So I say well I need to know man before I order it. He says "let me see if anyone else knows". Someone in background says "yes its aluminum". So I ask, "how thick is it? Is it going to replace the entire trim or is it a thin piece of aluminum?" This guy on the phone replies "good god man, let me check". Then he comes back on the phone and says "I dont know how thick it is man, nobody does, anything else you wanta know"? Talking to me the entire time like I just disturbed his smoke break or he just didnt have time to help me at all. So, I said "no thats about all I can think of really". He replies "ok well have a good day". I replied back " well, can I order one"? His reply, "huh, oh yeah".
I WILL NEVER DEAL WITH AMES AGAIN unless I absolutely have no other choice available. Did I call to complain, no, what good would that do. Id have to pay to ship it back and probably a restocking fee. And they probably wouldnt believe my story and just figure Im another bitching customer wanting something for nothing.
Today I get the part in and as I suspected its pretty much the same very thin piece of machine turned swirl aluminum that came on the 70 gto dash. Now Im a little pissed off because I had to pretty much buy the damn thing just to see what it was because this guy was NO HELP AT ALL. Will I keep it, yeah because I want this look on my dash. Problem now, I need the original plastic piece also to put it on. I was really hoping for the money I spent it was going to be a replacement piece instead of a sticky backed piece of thin aluminum overlay.
So now I have a wanted ad posted for the 2 plastic original pieces if anyone has a set on the cheap I would love to see and possibly buy. I know Ames sells them but not for another $70 I do not think so.
