The 15th annual Pontiac Heaven weekend has been rescheduled and relocated.
The new dates are Friday, May 3 through Sunday, May 5 and will be primarily held at Firebird Raceway near Chandler which is outside of Phoenix, Az right on the I-10. If you are flying in, it is now a short 20 minute drive to get there. We are looking forward to moving my event to a national NHRA event track! There is a beautiful Hotel and casino across the street and many other places to eat and more nearby. There is even a Love's truck stop right across the interstate that sells high octane leaded and unleaded race gas from the pump!
If you are like most of the Pontiac crowd that leans on what many call traditional Pontiac Power ( I call it REAL Pontiac Power ), this event is for YOU. ALL show and race entries are Pontiac powered, no exceptions! You will love it! We are a great group of pure Pontiac fans that get together for this special annual "Reunion" to celebrate that wonderful Pontiac V8!
We are still working out some details like our host hotel, conference room, etc. Soon, I will announce this so, hold off on reservations for now.
Please help spread the word and make plans to attend this one of a kind weekend!
Friday night, there will be open track test and tune, plus diesel truck drags and Pontiac brackets.
Saturday the 4th is the 15th annual Pontiac Heaven exclusively for Pontiac powered vehicles.
Saturday night is more open test and tune plus the Nostalgic Show & GO! warm ups for all 1981 and older brands.
Sunday the 5th, the Pontiacs take on the world at the 11th annual Nostalgic Show & GO!

Sadly, I have learned of Daves passing this week of health issues.

We will be remembering Dave along with Ron Hildreth at this years Pontiac Heaven. If any other of our regular attendees of Pontiac Heaven have passed on, please let me know.

Works great for us---fifty miles closer. It's exactly 100 miles from our house. We will be trailering our '60 Catalina project car--might have it painted by then. And we'll be selling at the swap meet. My Tempest will have to "wait 'til next year".
Thanks for all your hard work on this, Steve. The weather should be great.
Looking forward to seeing everyone there---with time to watch the races and talk.

Glad to hear about the Heaven still going on. Had a blast last year! Unfortunately the date change is bad for me. However I should be able to make the Fest in Nov. Will that also be at Firebird? Cuts my driving time from 1.5 hrs to 45 min. Hope to attend some meetups in April.
Ps what about the stories I hear about Firebird shutting down because the land lease is up?

Great, GREAT Event!!!!
I no longer have the financial ability to make it, but HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS EVENT! Please go and take videos to share with the rest of us. You will not regret it. One of my BEST PONTIAC memories was here, and probably 3 of my top 5 memories were at these events!:D

Glad to hear it! I will plan on being there! I was crushed thinking that it might be cancelled since this will be the first time since 2007 that I will have a car ready for participation. I am going to flog my 67 FB in the trophy bracket.
And yes. Lots of hotels, eating, shopping, etc. nearby.
But I will miss the "old school" feel of Speedworld.

Glad you enjoyed yourself, that is my goal.
I also have the first weekend in November scheduled 1-3.
we will run a similar program except for the Saturday event will be the annual Pontiac Buick Olds FALL FEST open to all years and models of these 3 makes.
As of today, the rest of the 3 day weekend in November will be the same as this years May weekend.
If things go as planned, we will return to our normal annual schedule for 2014 and beyond with the first weekends of April and November. It will be a bit warm in early May but, it was the best date I could get. I have moved the daily schedule a bit earlier for the May weekend to accomodate the weather.

I am working on a host hotel with a special rate but, working with all new people and location, have not reached what I wanted yet. So, am endorsing the Wild Horse Pass hotel and casino. This is across the road from Firebird and the closest to the track. Info below on the revised event flyers.

Okay so what's the scoop Steve?
I know Speedworld shut down until further notice, but I keep hearing Firebird is on thin ice too with a tentative shut down date that goes from month to month.
So is this May event going to happen or is it a maybe? I know you also mentioned you still have your November event scheduled too. However I see nothing on Firebirds website about scheduling anything past this current month (that thing needs updated with more month to month events) So it's making it hard for some of us to plan. With the way Charlie let the place go it should be no surprise that the website lacks info, and it also makes some of us believe the tentative shut down could still happen if events aren't listed months in advance. So yeah,,,I'm hesitant.
I can probably make it as I've always been a regular to this event, even though it's now a much longer drive. But moving my schedule around for a track that may close at any point seems like wasted energy. I'm going to miss the nostalgia atmosphere of Speedworld, reminded me of home.
I hope this goes as planned? I'm also hearing there is supposed to be an F-body shootout this same weekend? So I don't know what to bring down there. Please clearify. Thanks. ;)

This is my understanding of the situation:
Firebird is located on Indian land, and the facility is owned by the Indians. The end of the current lease is up the end of March, and it will not be renewed due to conflicts between the tribe and the lessee. I believe that the tribe will be running the track after the end of March, but will leave this for Steve to clarify. The website is owned and run by the lessee, and that is why it shows the last event at the end of March.
As a side note, Firebird is 17 additional miles for those coming from SoCal, but Google lists the same travel time...
Formulajones
03-22-2013, 11:44 AM
Yeah, I'm aware of the Indian Reservation land and the lease. It's the same thing that happened to the Beeline Dragstrip in the late 70's  If anyone even remembers that. They say history repeats itself. Now that Speedworld is gone (which started around 61 if I remember right) We've now lost the only 2 dragstrips that actually had nostalgia history (Firebird was opened in the 80's long after the good times of dragracing) But I digress :(
The lease isn't being rehonored because of the lack of renovations and upkeep that is said to be Charlie's problem (the lessee). The Native Americans want the place cleaned up understandably. My hesitation comes from talks of whether the Native Americans were even going to keep the place open after March while possible renovations took place or whether they would even attempt to run it themselves at all. It's been on going for months. But I didn't mean to drag all that into the conversation. I truely hope it stays open and becomes a top notch facility.
Anyway, yeah you guys coming from Cali don't have much issue with the relocation since you'll probably just shoot straight accross the I-10 in no time.
Myself, I come down from the North (Prescott) and the 303 loop took me around Pheonix in no time flat and dumped me off just a few miles from Speedworld. Now I have to travel straight through town on the heavily traveled 101 and 202.
Firebird is only another 20-25 mile extra distance, but the added time is 45 minutes or more depending on traffic unfortunately.

Us guys coming from California have always used the 303 (Estrella Parkway?) to avoid the stop & go, LA style, traffic that begins at the 303 in order to avoid the afternoon I-10 congestion that doesn't let up until well east of greater Phoenix. I'm OK with spending more driving time in order to attend another  Pontiac Heaven event.
BTW, I'll be driving my 11 sec. '66 GTO "race car" along with my wife, luggage, and tools. See you there :).

The new 303 is sweet, unfortunately not an option for me when I have to hit the East and South ends of Phoenix for Firebird. They don't have the North East section of the 303 completed. Only the North and West section that took me to Speedworld.

If you are driving from CA, you can save a lot of time by going on the 8 instead of the 10. When you get to Gila Bend, drive just past the airport and there will be a sign that says Maricopa RD, That use to be a dirt road, it's paved now and runs right along the rail road tracks. It shaves off a lot of miles and you will come out close to where Firebird is at.

Yes, I remember Beeline very well. I ran my Pontiacs there the last 5 or so years it was open.

This pic is waiting to get in at Beeline ( note the sign in the background ) in 1977 pulling my 'glass tilted '69 GTO with my '72 GTO 455HO as a Senior in highschool. Beelines situation was quite different as that tribe had no interest in running the race track and wanted it shut down. IMO, that was a major income mistake but, that is their problem.
As for Firebird, Mick is correct, the Gila River Indian Nation has no desire to shut down Firebird raceway, they just wish to no longer have the current management ( Charlie Allen ), running it.
Firebird will stay open and under new management along with its own website.
I hope this answers your questions with this concern.

Going this way also takes you past the main Pontiac Heaven yard location too. It could be a better way from the San Diego area but, I think I-10 is better for the La and northern Ca attendees. If you come on Friday, try to plan around rush hour if you can. If you can make the tech sessions which start at 1pm, you will not have any traffic issues.
There is much to be done in planning for our new location and dates but, will get it done. The schedule has been moved up an hour or so to help compensate for the higher expected temps.
We are looking forward to running another Pontiac Heaven weekend and seeing all our regular friends as well as making new ones.
There will be track time Friday eve, Saturday, Saturday eve and Sunday.

If they are driving from LA, the best way is to take the 10 to Indio and then get off on the expressway. There will be a sign that says desert cities. It cuts kitty corner over to the 8. From LA it should about 8 hours to Firebird, it could take more depending on traffic. Once you get past Indio there is not much to slow you down.

Yes Steve that clears it up, thankyou. I hadn't heard whether they had new management, or whether they were going to try and keep things running during new renovations etc..or just close it all together for several months while things got ironed out. All I knew for sure is that Bonderaunt was going to keep running his road course/driving school.
I'll make plans to be there.

I believe NHRA does their own track prep for national events--bring their own crew, equipment, etc. In years past, there have been concerns about track prep at Firebird (mine among them), so it's certainly worth bringing up and emphasizing with the new track manager when you meet with him .

OK, if the concern is track prep and not the track itself, that is different. We'll see which Vince is referring to.
Remember- the track will be under new management so , things the former did, may not apply. Of course, I will make sure the track is in the best shape possible. I never want to see anyone hurt.

There is really no comparison to NHRA National event prepped tracks since NHRA does their own prep, and four weeks from a National Event is an eternity. And, this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-ctlb6J6-Y&feature=player_embedded
So, yeah, as a person who has raced divisional events there in the past, when the track prep was often mediocre at best, and with Charlie's last event this weekend, I was just inquiring about the track surface since I think others would be interested, as well. If you don't feel it's necessary, no worries...I was just asking since you mentioned you would be meeting with the new managers out there.

Here's a report from a friend who races in the both the Sportsman Pro and nostalgia series events that he posted in another forum...
I'm ashamed to say... I was there but out in the early rounds. I stayed until the trucks were done. Robosorus tore down a power pole and put out the lights on the track, the monster truck show went on in the dark. The trucks show always gouges the track, they used to do it before a refinishing project. But exactly what damage he left. I havn't seen or heard yet.
I heard the burning cars were dropped OFF THE TRACK not ON. So that's one glimmer of hope. Rumor was Charlie was pissed that the tribe wouldn't buy the safety equipment and timing system, and he was going to do as much damage as possible. For once I can say he surprised me, BUT I haven't seen the track since the dark event.
As usual he did put the finals of Az grudge and National Dragster challange cars out 'in front of the crowd' on a jet-fuel coated track. Darren Dozal went into the wall HARD around 200'. Safety for the racers was never much of a concern,,, I didn't expect anything new out of him for this fiasco.
CHEERS to ANY managment that takes over. It's bound to be an improvement.
If I hear any verified news, I'll let you all know.
Hopefully, the new management will be able to fix the damage and have the track prepped for Steve's event weekend.

Another thing of interest for those who do not know the area well.
They just opened a premium outlet mall right next to Firebird with over 90 stores!
Here is the link http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=105
There is also the Rawhide western town, the Gila River hotel and casino next door as well. Across the interstate is a Love's truck stop with an Arbys, showers and they sell high octane race gas from the pump both leaded and unleaded.
There are many businesses and hotels, places to eat, ect all nearby.

I went to the track today and walked up to it and looked around. I did not see any serious damage to the track. There is still remnants of last weekend there, they have yet to clean it up. Next week and onward, I will be there a lot working out details and making plans with the new track manager. Will let everyone know how things are.
In the meantime, I did get a deal at the Hampton Inn near the track.
If you mention "Pontiac Heaven" and or "Nostalgic Show & GO", you will get a special rate of $89. Their ph# is 480-753-5200
I am also working with the hotel and casino too but, have yet to get anything finalized.
Also will be posting a 'survival guide' showing places of interest in the immediate area.
We are looking forward to having our annual Pontiac Heaven next month!

Hey Jim we'll miss you if you cancel. Well, unless most of the group goes with the Hampton, then we'll be over there also.
It looks like the Hampton is about three miles north of the track. AAA discount at the Casino got us the $116.10 rate so there is $27 a night difference. I wonder how the parking lot security is at that Hampton -- looks pretty close to the freeway.
I think we'll sit tight with our reservations until Steve can get us some additional info.

Not to rain on anyones parade here, but the latest news on the track is a bit of a downer. It appears they are having some "behind the scenes" issues with staff and then some. They have cancelled everything for the month of April, including events that Bondurant had scheduled which doesn't sound promising.
I just hope since this event is so close to end of April that it isn't affected or the problems don't carry over into May. I am planning to hit at least 2 of the events this weekend (Pontiac Heaven and the Fbody shootout) but I'm a bit worried now.
Here's the latest info if interested....
Officially, Firebird International Raceway saw its final checkered flag March 30. But the Sun Valley Marina Corp., a tribal company that leases the raceway and the surrounding land from GRIC, fully intends to continue operating the raceway—just as soon as the company can break out from an unforeseen pit stop.
When Sun Valley chose not to extend its 30-year sublease with Firebird president and owner Charlie Allen because of unfavorable terms, Sun Valley’s board of directors expected to maintain continuity and financial productivity immediately by signing the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving to a one-year agreement. Bondurant had already been operating as a sub-tenant under Allen for 23 years and with Allen out as a middleman, rent revenue going back to the Community would increase 500 percent.
The ink was still drying on the Bondurant deal when the Sun Valley board was told it was invalid. At a Feb. 14 special meeting with the Economic Development Standing Committee, which oversees many tribal business entities including Sun Valley, a 1980 resolution was cited which canceled Sun Valley’s authority to make leases for less than a year without EDSC’s approval.
EDSC then called for the Sun Valley board members—President Harlan Bohnee, Treasurer Pamela Pratt Morago and Secretary Cheryl Coppedge—to resign by Feb. 27. When they did not, EDSC sent a recommendation for the board to be removed at the next Community Council meeting on March 6.
In the interim, Sun Valley presented at district meetings in D1, D3, D4 and D5 and rallied support from some Community members and when March 6 came, the vote to remove the Sun Valley board was never held and the issue was dispensed.
But business has still stalled because under the 1980 resolution the company cannot make lease agreements without EDSC’s approval. A new amendment to Sun Valley’s master lease with GRIC would enhance Sun Valley’s authority to negotiate leases up to five years. The amendment was on the agenda of the March 27 EDSC meeting, but that meeting was canceled because there was no quorum. The next committee meeting is April 10.
“We’re in limbo because the lease on Firebird is going to expire before we even get to the committee now,” Morago said. The lease with Firebird ends April 6.
Bondurant events scheduled for April have been canceled until further notice. Sun Valley cannot hold any races until it buys safety equipment, and it can’t get a loan to buy the equipment until it can sign leases with tenants.
Once the smoke clears, Sun Valley has major development plans to complement the racing infrastructure that already exists. It hopes to host at least 150 events a year. Future development projects potentially in the works include a theme park, water park and a movie theater.
The Sun Valley Marina Corp. charter was approved in 1970. The property comprising Firebird and the surrounding area was recently valued at $20 million, said Arthur Felder, a consultant to Sun Valley. Eighty-three allotted landowners own about one fourth of the land.
Council appoints Sun Valley board members for lifetime terms. The master lease between Sun Valley and GRIC expires in 2019.

I'm sure Steve will confirm, and it definately appears they are planning serious renovations, with a water park and movie theater mixed in. I'm guessing this will be a beautiful facility when done with things for the whole family to do.
Unfortunately it appears some political drama behind the scenes is slowing things down. I simply posted the latest just in case Steve hasn't been made aware.
Fingers crossed that Pontiac Heaven is unaffected.

OK, before the mudd and rumors get spread any thicker...
There is NO reason to think that the drag strip is going to be turned into a water park. Remember, this is a national event NHRA track. No one wants to give that lucrative deal up and there is no reason to think they will. I would not be surprised if a water park is added to the area but, it will not compromise any of the racing ( drag, road race, water ) on the facility.
Relax, I know you all want, and deserve, answers. I am working hard to provide them. Spreading rumors and hearsay is not helping anyone. I have no reason the think that anyone here is purposely trying to do that, Just want to reassure people that I will keep all informed.
Bear with me. Some issues have come up but, they are being worked out. This has been a trying time for me to say the least.
Will Pontiac Heaven run ? YES
Is Firebird going to remain a drag strip? YES
More info coming, in the meantime, I kindly ask to 'sit tight' as I work things out. If I reported every little detail it would be misleading. Trust me, I am working on it.
thank you for your patience. Some things are out of my control but, many things are in my control. stay tuned. The most current info will be on my site www.pontiacheaven.org

Steve,
No rumors intended here, that was just the latest news straight from the Gila Bend website that I believe to be factual (it's run by the same tribe), nor did I mean to imply a water park was replacing the dragstrip. Only that the water park and theater would be "additions" to what is already there. I'm sure that is what the letter meant that I quoted and that's how I interprated it.
I appreciate all the hard work and troubles you've had to deal with, and I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that. Now lets go racing ;)

Late this afternoon I had another meeting with the new track president and he informed me that they will not have the new compulink timing system installed by the May 3rd-5th weekend.

This means that if this years Pontiac Heaven runs May 3-5 there will be no drag racing.
So, am looking into other options- changing the date, again, running the event without drags, etc. Will keep all informed.

After much thought and looking into more options, I have decided to run the 15th annual Pontiac Heaven car show and part exchange on Saturday, May 4th.
With Firebird not available until a later date, I will have to move my racing portions of the events to the evenings as the weather will be too hot.
So, I have yet a new location for the show and swap.
It is at the Couryard by Marriot hotel 1100 s Price rd in Chandler. It is very easy to get to and just south of the 202 and 101 fwys.
swap setup is 6am
show registration starts at 7am
awards around noon
There will be music and their bistro rest. will be open and serving food and beverages indoors.
General admission is free and all are welcome.
Show entries are for real Pontiac power vehicles of al years and makes $25
Swap spaces are $20
There will be more updates on my site.
thanks.

Thanks for all your hard work on this, Steve. It's disappointing about the race portion, but it was unavoidable. We had the "perfect storm" of both Phoenix-area tracks going down at the same time with a lot of uncertainty about their futures. We'll be there for the show and swap meet and we look forward to both. I've got a bunch of stuff to sell at the swap meet to help pay for the blower conversion on my Tempest.:)
Is there a group rate at the hotel?

Thank you for your kind words and we understand that this 15th annual year has had to be a year of compromise. I am so appreciated of my sponsors understanding and guests as well.
This race will be annouced soon, perhaps as early as tomorrow as I have another meeting scheudled with the track president at that time. We are still ironing out details. The race portion is likely to be held in the evening and into the night as the weather will be nicer then.

Our camera wasn't there, either. It was carefully packed away in the suitcase we left on our bed back in Tucson. I hate getting old.

But, wait 'til next year.............

Big thanks to Steve for putting one of these things on...takes a lot of effort. Drove down from my new house in Prescott to have a look at the show and to meet Steve and find out when Keith's Tempest would be on the road, only to find out it was on the road...only with a different transaxle. Now I'm back at the old house in central Ca. coast just looking at all this stuff I have to move after my new garage is built! And I just love these 9hr drives!

Hey Don,

Thanks Keith.
I have to build my garage first before I put up my Ca. house for sale. A three car attached garage is not going to be able to take seven cars, tools and equipment, although I did move a 389, 355, and 455 plus a Roto and a T-400. I also moved a huge electric train board that goes on our old kitchen counter/cabinets to the divider between the two and one car garage. I still have a 455 and a 428, two Pontiac rear ends and numerous VW engines too......And my 62 Catalina is in pieces! The reason I was in Prescott this past week-end was I had to submit my plans to building and safety. The plans will be in plan check for not more than three weeks and then I will be able to break ground. I'm the general contractor. The garage will be 1632 sq feet and will have two lifts. We've already painted the inside of the house and have done tile in the great room and hallways, dining and sitting room and kitchen. I figured it was something to do before I start building.
Culture shock??? Not in the least, Our son is renting a house from us in Laveen, so we've been your way many a time. Plus we meet the kids and grand kids in Prescott many times because they use Prescott to get out of the heat. I also joined the Prescott Antique Automobile club.....well over 100 members, and many live in the development where I bought. There are so many old retired farts like me driving through the neighborhood in their antique or hot rod cars all the time. Quite a mix of cars. One guy I know from the Olds club of America who lives in Chino Valley has over thirty Oldsmobiles! Most people are refugees from So. Cal. getting away from the political and fiscal mess! We looked for two years before we bought so we knew many people already. Now you guys will have a beer stop when you take your many adventurous road trips!

Hey Les! Not too salty, but since I don't surf anymore due to a L-3/L-4 back problem that even surgery couldn't completely cure I figured I would find a place that had the same temperatures where I live in Ca. and be a lot less encumbered by taxes, rules and regulations. So I found it. It even has a little airport not far away so Hiner can fly in. My only big regret is since I moved form So. Cal to the Central Coast is I have a lot of car guy friends and friends in the towns of Pismo, AG, Morro Bay, Cayucos, Atascadero, Templeton, Paso Robles and Cambria. Truly a beautiful-beautiful area if only the Gov. would get out of the way.
Nice thing too about Prescott is I will be able to own some cars I would have never been able to do in Ca. There is no smog test on ANY car there.

Welcome to Prescott Don. The Prescott Antique club is a great group of guys that put on a great show at Watson Lake near the Dells late in the year. Alot of old car guys in the area with several weekend cruises every month to attend as well. Not a big scene up here like Phoenix but there's almost always something car related to do on a smaller scale anywhere in the tri-city area. Keep on eye on "Cruise Arizona" which covers the northern part of the state for car events. "Cruisin' Arizona" covers the Pheonix/Tuscon metro areas.
Hope that helps.
Steve, sounds like you had a great turnout, glad to hear it and all the work is much appreciated ;)
Thanks for the welcome. Was wondering if you belong to the Prescott Antique Automobile club too? What Pontiac's do you have? Also, every Saturday morning there is a car gathering at the Parking lot at Fry's on Willow Creek road...Hope it turns out to be like Huntington Beach donut derelicts and Pismo Derelicts!

After it was all other and everything cleaned up, a few of us decided to head for a bite to eat. 4 very tired, but happy, Pontiac gear heads sharing a meal. it does not get better!
Steve, will you be posting all pictures of the show and the show winners??

All pictures of every car? no. But, already have the winners and classes listed on my site. Will be working on sizing and getting pics of winners and some of the others there too.
I am hoping my next event will be in California this summer. Stay tuned....
thanks

Very welcome. I don't belong to the Antique Club (although I should) but I know some of the guys and always put a car in their show (won best modified last year with the chevelle) and I just love to hang up there, good swap meet, goes all weekend and attracts alot from Phoenix as well so you get a large diversity of cars.
If I were to join a club, that would be the one to join since it's diverse. I have a diverse collection of muscle cars so I really don't fit into any certain brand of car club that well. The Antique Club goes back as far as old steam engine stuff and anything in between.
As far as pontiacs I have a 71 Ventura Sprint and a 70 Ram air III Formula.
I wasn't aware that Fry's on Willow Creek was still going on. I know a couple years ago that started out as a casual swap meet kind of thing, but it sounds like it's morphed into a car gathering of sorts?? Just this past Friday was the cruise at Mcdonalds in Chino, and Saturday I took the mustang to the all Mustang cruise at In-n-Out Burger at Walmart and 69. Third Friday of the month is the Zeaks cruise now at the Frontier Village on 69, that's usually a decent cruise. Some of my favorite cruises we attend are down in Phoenix.

Looking forward to checking that out.
Any plans to have a pontiac event this year at Firebird when they get things straightened out?
