69 Ambulance

I will be fixing up this 69 Catalina Ambulance. Probably put a 455 in it with 2-4barrel set up I have. I even thought of side pipes!!! The biggest part is I need a hood so let me know if anyone has one.

I owned an ambulance for a short period of time. Same Red light on top.

I was working in a salvage yard (Summer Job) basically just selling parts at a counter but free access to what the yard brought in. Deals like a 1966 Tri-Power in the trunk with all of the linkage, air cleaners, waterneck, etc for $15 and I carry it to my vehicle.

So a Guy drives in with an 1965 Ambulance. He has a water pump leak at the hole at the bottom of the snout. Wants to know what the yard will give him for the vehicle.
Owner was a "tight wad" from European extraction and says $15 for the vehicle.

I look at the engine and it is a rebuilt 1964 engine in a 1965 ambulance.
When they rebuilt the engine they put a crappy water pump on it and it leaked.
Very few miles on it since the rebuild.

So I offer the guy 5 times what the yard guy wanted, made a deal to meet the guy that night, and quit my job.

So I drive to my Uncles Dealership that night, get a dealer plate, go back to where the
meeting place is the next day, pay the guy the $75 and put the dealer plate on the ambulance, and drive it to my uncle's dealership lot.

Over the next week before the new college semester started, I pulled the engine on my GTO, stored it at the dealership, installed the Ambulance engine, and later installed the Tri-Power and a Mackellar #10 solid lifter cam kit. I beat the crap out of that engine as well as going on many long distance trips. It was a great engine for $75 and some labor.

So fix up your ambulance. They are cool vehicles. My uncle sold the ambulance body to a rock band a few months later and they installed a chebby engine in the vehicle and drove it for several years with that engine. Vehicle was white with one big light on top.

Sorry for the long story but always nice to talk to another "ambulance owner"

Here are the pictures rotated so they're easier to see. There were a number of different companies that used to build ambulances and hearses, but the information I have indicates only Superior was building them out of Pontiacs in 1969. They built 250 that year, so it's a pretty uncommon vehicle.

Interesting color for an ambulance. Is that Limelight Green or is it gold? Hard to tell from the pictures. Either way, I'd expect that most were either white or red.

Would make an awesome tow rig for your Firebird!

From John Gunnell's book "75 Years of Pontiac". It was published by Crestline, I bought it in 1982. It's a very handy reference, but has been out of print for ages and is hard to find these days.

I've always had a soft spot for Professional Pontiacs ever since I saw the one below in '09.

Neat project, the grille on your car is Bonneville spec rather than Catalina. All 69 fullsize car hoods were identical (except those Canadian spec cars) and they didn't seem particularly prone to rust, should be an easy find. Those front side markers light bezels are unique to chassis cars like an ambulance, tourist car or hearse.

If you watch the earlier seasons of the original Hawaii Five-O you regularly see 67, 68 and 69 Pontiac ambulances. They were all white iirc.

North, I think you are correct it is a Bonneville. I was told by the junk yard that it was a Catalina. I will check the vin.
