So now I need a crossmember to mount the transmission to a 1978 Firebird subframe.

Yes, I am aware this is not the cheapest option out there.
Used their crossmember in a 66 GTO when converting to a 2004R... highly recommend.

Use a second gen TH400 cross member. Will have to make holes in your later frame to mount, but its easy.
If your car was a 1973, its a bolt right in, no mods deal. Yeah, same driveshaft too.
