Installing a rear window defogger in my Bonneville. I have been trying to recreate the wire harness from the switch connecter back to the fan motor. I have a 65/66 wire harness that i am using as a template. 65/66 came with Green/Black wires while in 67 they switched over to purple/white. I am guessing the green wire is 16 AWG while the black wire is 18 or 20 AWG. The total length of the harness is around 174" end to end. The 2 wires run together and then splice together at around 54" and then with the single green wire back to the fan motor. My guess is the black wire is a resistant type of wire that reduces the voltage down when on the slow speed setting. In my case i used primary copper stranded 16 AWG and 20AWG wire but cant achieve the low speed. Looking at the sample i have, the black wire seems to be normal primary stranded copper wire but upon closer observation when pulling the wires out of the double connecter, the black wire is of a different stranded material.
Did they use Nichrome or perhaps aluminum back in 60's to create the resistance needed to reduce the voltage.? I have read to use similar resistance wire that is used on coils. Question is where do i find this type of wire and is it available in 18/20AWG and does it come with different sheathing colors such as white. Can't find it, any help would be great. I don't want to purchase harnesses available from M/H or others as they carry GTO only and I would like to make it myself getting as close to the original as possible.
