Plastic fan shroud needed, WTB

As the title states I am looking for a fan shroud. GM part number 479086. This is the full circle fan shroud I am specifically looking for. I know this number was superseded several times. As many of you know, I am putting a 73 SD-455 car back together after it has sat in pieces for over 40 years. I have a GM NOS 10011265 fan shroud I can and might use if the proper one can not be found. But again, as many know, it doesn't look quite the same and has a shallow cut out at the bottom that the correct original one does not. So, if anyone out there has one, I am interested. I would also be willing to provide a partial trade for my NOS shroud if someone is interested. I need one that is not cracked or broken or suffering other physical damage. I have no issue painting it as needed. Thank you .

Are these shrouds really that hard to find? I think all V-8 Firebirds 1970-1975-6 used them. That's over 100,000 cars? Fill me in if you know the facts about these. Thanks very much.

I understand. But dozens of parts vendors sell the incorrect one as a reproduction . (for my car) They do ship them. I imagine lots of bubble wrap and a stiff box. Probably the same way you would shop a sheet metal patch panel or even an aluminum radiator. Willing to pay what it takes to get it here in one piece.

I'm not sure if you missed it, but it was mentioned earlier that the original/early shroud does not have the scallop(?) cut out on the bottom;
The replacement part used on later second gen cars has the cutout.

I have never come across a rad shroud (apart from the one which came with my car) without the cutout on the bottom - and I was looking for some time.
I have a nice spare, and it's the later part.

I haven't a hot clue when the later shroud first showed up.

Not sure if this helps, but I have and have seen quite a few of these shrouds with the cutout at the bottom... but they have a separate plastic piece that clips in to fill the cut out area making it a full circle. Anyone know what the purpose of that cut out was? Or have seen the shrouds with the extra piece to fill the cutout are?

Ive shipped quite a few of these shrouds, just shipped a new repro one to a guy in cali, I use a big flat piece of cardboard and wrap it around the entire shroud, then cut the overlapped ends to fold in like wrapping paper. Never had shipping damage doing that, its like a big box around it to fit with some additional cardboard or styrofoam on the corners.

Sorry I haven't checked in on this thread for a week. I am nearing the point where the shroud is going to be installed on this 73 SD. I think I am just going to use the NOS one I have with the cutout at the bottom. While not correct, it's new and in excellent shape. I will keep and eye out for the correct one at Norwalk this coming year and act accordingly. Paying $500.00 + for a used one and then a couple hundred dollars for the finishing supplies just isn't in the budget at this time. BTW, that shroud, the correct one was $21.30 in my 1975 MPC! Ha! The 1970-2 unit, I believe, was cast 478114. It has no cutout on the bottom.
The 1973-? unit was similar and cast 479086 but has the extra hole for the overflow bracket.

Mike, I think these two numbers are also different in that the 478114 has a wide edge (about an inch) along the driver side of the shroud where the 479086 has a thin edge. I always thought the wide edge one was for the 3-core radiators and the thin edge one was for 4-core radiators.

Thanks for the additional information. That will be helpful. My car isn't headed for a museum. I need to keep it in perspective. It is a very nice car with a large amount of original GM content though. Very few reproduction parts other than a few trinkets I could not find NOS. It seems that many SD cars survive probably due to the instant collector value they had early on. Installing the wiring harness now. That's more complicated than I anticipated as well. But progress is being made.

The extra hole must have come after the removal of the fat braces.
That LA shroud should be good, just expensive.

Thanks for that! Yes, that is the correct shroud. Wish it wasn't 3000 miles away. I am going to consider it. I will see what my friend who would end up restoring it thinks about it. Probably have $700.00 in it by the time it;s ready to install. Not being a "numbers matching guy", I rely on my much more tuned in friends to coach me on how important some dumb part like this really is. I have spent my Pontiac life going fast so stuff like this is clearly out of my wheelhouse. I value their opinion. Thanks again.

Yes, the 479086 shroud is for a four core radiator and the 487114 is for a three core. I don't know if there was a two core radiator, and if there was, I do not know if there is a different shroud for that. The six cylinder cars I've seen did not use a full shroud, just a finger guard on the top.

Thanks again for the lead. Unfortunately, that one turned out to be a scam as well. It may have been a real part, but the payment arrangements were some kind of scam and I couldn't get a straight answer out of the seller about anything. Might have been on crack. I don't have the time or interest to play games. Simply looking for a used car part.

That was too bad. It had read to me like he really wasn't set on shipping this item. That's why you try to find a good member on here, that lives there and have them make the deal and ship to you. Like maybe Eric (FASTASSBIRD) who deals with this kind of stuff.

Through various connections and help from the forum, I now have a pretty darn good shroud in my possession. It needs a little repair and I will probably paint it so it looks more uniform. But it is the correct part number and is the correct full round shape. Thanks for the help from this forum. I will post some pics once it's all fixed up. Happy holidays!

I have an NOS fan shroud. It's the one that has the cut out section at the bottom. I can get the part number for you. I think it ends in 265. It is the GM replacement for the one I just found. If this will work for you, PM me. I will make you a nice deal on it. It is not a re-pop.

Saw one on eBay. Tried to tell him I wanted it, but couldn't find someone close to enough to pick it up and either hold for Nationals or ship it for a lot less than auction lists. Whole corner is broke off, including 4th bolt hole from what I saw. Almost pulled the trigger until I looked at pictures again as something didn't look right when scanning the angles of photos.
