Just a suggestion, what I do is install 2 studs and then slide the heads on, then screw in the rest of the studs.

It's easier to get the gasket and head down to the deck that way.

BTW. stock pistons last about a miniute under detonation or preignition, i busted 2 engines...

What you describe sounds like a loose torque converter maybe one that's not as efficient as it could be.

TH350 is pretty much the standard swap in cases...

TH350 is pretty much the standard swap in cases like this - nearly plug and play and plenty strong for a 326. Do a search on this site as it has been detailed many times over.

Besides the difference in offsets, the '70 V8 Bird 2 groove crank pulleys are VERY similar...
