I have an asymmetrical Rotary in a building 50 feet wide, so I was able to set the lift up 14' from the facing wall. I wanted the extra space to allow for tool box and engine hoist use.

My suggestion on the split would be to sand blast...

My suggestion on the split would be to sand blast both sides of it to remove the rust, then weld it from the back side. You'll have a heavier, stronger (and unseen) weld that you won't risk grinding...

To prevent the common twist problem that tower clamps have, hold the portion with the threaded nut using channel locks while tightening the clamp bolt. Sucks, but sometimes does the job.
