it's done all the time, bugs me as a purist when it comes to mirrors but I'm also stuck with the non matching mirrors due to having a 69 remote. I haven't been able to bring myself to do anything...

First to get the rear air horn screws out sit the carb up on a block of wood so it can’t rock....
