Both Directions

Only true when intake vacuum is high enough to out run crankcase fumes.

No intake vacuum under heavy load and the crankcase fumes come out the valve cover vent.

More you worked the pedal the shorter the rod got.

Eventually getting short enough that the clutch wouldn't disengage.

The reserve cannister is to keep heat/ac/dash vents working properly when the engine is under load (low vacuum).
