Barn find 69 T/A

I just picked up another bird and I thought I would post it. I am a 2nd gen guy but there are only 2 first gens I have been interested in. A 1968 400 4 speed conv and a 1969 4 speed Trans Am.
Well I have found the Trans Am. I just picked it up from the original owner. It has 114500 miles on it and has not been driven since 1982. All of the upper surfaces are original paint but there have been spot repairs around the bottom from various dings when it was his daily driver until parked in 82. It is complete including all ramair pans, manifolds, etc. It appears to be all matching numbers from what I have seen so far. It has the original rusted out muffler. All of the interior is original, well, except for the wonderful speaker cutouts.:( Luckily the car has hardly any rust at all. The trunk and floor pans are perfect. The original polyglas spare and rally wheel are on the front drivers side of the car. It has great documentation including: window sticker, warranty card, protecto plate, owners manual, bill of sale, receipt for deposit, pre-delivery inspection, and all registration cards from 1969-1982. I will start the process of getting it road ready soon. I am going to clean it up and enjoy it and drive as is for awhile before any resto work. It should be a fun car. |

That is so cool!! Truly amazing find!
|
that is a awesome find!!
|
Wow, that's fantastic. Can you find me one? :D
|
Congrats on that fantastic find! :)
|
Great Find
You car is remarkable. I am trying to restore my 1969 Trans Am and collect all the pictures I can to help in the restoration. I am having trouble saving yours - could you please e-mail any picture to assist me with my car. My home phone is 209-634-9543.
Thanks - Jim |
I would agree with Keith and musclecollector - they are only original once.
It appears that this car can be freshened up to "survivor" status. To be able to leave the stripes original as proof of what the factory did would be a plus - both as "survivor" and as reference for those whose cars must be restored. |
Damn jim that car was right in our backyard. lol How did we miss that? Not that i can afford another one. :( Hell i would drive to the bay area and take pics myself if he would let me haha. Second barn find t/a out of that area. Someone found a 70 ram air iii car in Gilroy not to long ago.
|
OHHHHHH and I sure hope you register it with those black and yellow plates!
|
Very nice...CONGRATS!!!
Did you find that up north, or was that down in So Cal? Rumour has it there's a 69 T/A survivor in...oh, never mind, I think I'll keep that bit of info for myself...;) |
good point, the condition is about right for that one. and the time frame. lol and its not really a big secret about the one sitting in the storage lot in valencia haha
|
I currently have no intentions of restoring the car. But, I do believe it is not quite good enough to be a survivor either. So it will be just a driver for now.
We currently have a 3 part plan for getting it going: Get it running Get it stopping Get it moving-it appears the clutch is mating with the flywheel:) As soon as that is accomplished I will drive it locally and get the engine compartment and undercarriage steam cleaned. Then I can start photographing and documenting everything. I will post to a picasaweb account when I get to that point. I will be replacing all belts, hoses, and clamps with the repro stuff. The great thing with original owner cars is that I know everything that has been replaced. Luckily, this guy has a memory like an elephant. I will probably get a Gardner exhaust system for it as well. It will make those local drives a little less noticeable to my neighbors. It will definitely keep the black plates. I found my 70 Trans Am and 73 Formula locally as well. The key to getting these cars is that you have to find before they are for sale. Once they are for sale it is to late especially if they hit Craigslist. There are guys who sit at their computer and hit refresh all day. They have made it their job. Just talk to everyone you know and you will find them. The car is available to be viewed at anytime by forum members. It was found in between north and south;) |
In between huh? that makes it even worse lol. Mine is in central California as is Jims haha oh well yours in on the coast now haha guess I can go back to claiming mine is the only one around! Great find! Its good to see another on pop up :)
|
Terrific find. In the Pontiac world, there aren't many cars that can top finding a 69 T/A!!
Do you know why the car sat so log?? Was is just lost interest?? Any other history from the owner?? |
Congrats on the find. Looks like a very nice car.
|
That 69 TA is a wonderful time capsule car.
Looks like it has been lying dormant in a dark garage since 1972 What is the history/story on this car? Thanks for posting pics |
Very nice find I'm happy for you.Is it a III or IV car?
|
Congratulations on a fantastic find. Would love to hear the story of how you found the car.
|
WOW!!!.....Amazing find indeed! Congratulations! Would like to see it sometime.
|
Well, today we found out the engine is seized from sitting 27 years. It is currently soaking but will probably be coming out soon. I will take alot of pictures.
Question: There are 2 carbs with the car. The original owner says one of them is original to the car but he isn't sure which one. The one on the car has the numbers 7028276 0986 and the other one is 28273 XX 0159. Any thoughts? The car has an 06A build date. I am going to get the complete history from the owner soon. I will post it. Thanks in advance |
I would say the 28273 is the original carb.
|
awesome find!! i have to say i am very jealous. this is one car that i really want and know i will more than likely never be able to afford . not a real t/a at least. looks very nice in the pics. congrats

Great find there! It is amazing how many of these cars were built during the first week of June. Seems like most of them. If one of those carbs is absolutely original to the car it certainly is the 28273. (0159) is the 15th day of 1969. The carb that is usually found on both RAIII and RAIV 4 speed 69 T/A's is the elusive 7029273. The 28273 was more commonly found on the RAIII GTO's and Judges. It is likely that your T/A had the 28273 since the original "elephant man" owner said that one of them was original! ;O) Good luck with the car. I think the 69 T/A is one of the all time greatest Pontiacs. I love em! |

Here are distributor and carb # pics
|
The carb stamping looks good.
That October 1968 distributor takes the cake for a wide date spread! |
WOW!!! GREAT Find indeed. Car looks really good. My Neighbor is the original owner of a 69 Trans Am RA-3 4-speed . Too bad it will probably never be restored. It is not in very good condition at all. Plus with him being in his mid 60's, I don't think the car will ever look like it should. Pretty run down at this point. Mostly it is original paint, but very rough shape. I am very impressed with the condition your 69 is in. Again GREAT Find.Enjoy driving.
|
What a time warp car....with the original carb too. Man, you found a good one.

Here are a couple more pics. The radiator is supposed to be original. The code on the tag looks like U0. Is that correct?
|
Very nice!!
I remember a '69 T/A running around Fresno back in the late '80's. I had my '76 T/A back then, and could never catch the owner to talk cars-- it seemed we were always going in opposite directions. Congratulations! |
Great Score.....finding them in that condition is a reward in itself.
|
If you look close enough, there is a line thru the O, making it a UQ (manual trans.) radiator. Yes, it looks original.
|
Nice to find something like that, especially one you really wanted.
Uncle Judge, one reason why so many TAs show the 06A Time Built code on the Norwood Data Plates is because Norwood did not advance the week for some reason for many of the months. So all June codes are 06A, all July 07A. Another reason to see so many from June and fewer after, they didn't sell so well. PMD may have scaled back production of the TA waiting for the early ones to be sold. I have an Invoice record for one June built TA that PMD didn't sell until Feb. '70, and it appears to have been a straight Zone Stock unit, not a Company Car. But in reality, I think the 677 built at Norwood were fairly well spread out in production between May and early Nov. From the discussion we had awhile back: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=581658 it seems the earliest TAs show 05A. The VIN may give a clue as to when in June this one rolled out, N103XXX being early, N107XXX being late. Body nos. will be all over the map. The PHS Invoice record will reveal if it was originally produced for a Dealer order or for Zone Stock Inventory. Fbirdinconcord, I keep a log of '69 'bird nos. for the purpose of revealing some of these little bits of trivia. If you are ever interested in getting yours added to the list, let me know. I don't connect cars with Owners but I do record the VIN (data isn't so useful without VIN associations). |

When I lived in S.Calif. '83-'87, there was a survivor '69 T/A (RAIII-Auto) in Tustin area. Talked to the orig. owner several times when I'd see him around town. Not interested in selling it. Orig. paint then. Friend who still lives in the area says he still see's the car once in awhile when the garage door is open. Not driven in a LONG time. They are still out there :) |
That is a great find,1969 T/A has always been one of my favorites.
|
69 survivor TA
Great find!!! Was it hard to get owner to part with?

I think the owner got tired of moving it with him since he quit driving it in 82. It has lived in garages, carports, barn, and canopy cover. He had planned on restoring it someday but something always came up. I think it actually bothered him to see it deteriorate.
I need a Panasonic CX-601EU 8 track player. The mounting plate is still mounted under the dash where it was installed in 1972. I just need a working unit. Here are a few more random pics. |
I'm going to ask the obvious question that's on everyone's mind...don't mean to be nosy but...
What did you pay for it? Ballpark is ok... |
Is the metal vacuum line, that runs on the drivers side of the carburetor, for the vacuum advance? Does the vacuum fitting in the rear of the carburetor only have the one outlet for the power brakes? Keep the photos coming. Thanks.
|
i think the question would be-is it for sale?
|
74SDFormula: I will get more photos of that area later today.
67blackcherry: I think I got it for a fair price but my wife thinks its where two fools met. Him for asking it and me for paying it:) gregsgtos2: Being a car dealer I can never say nothing is for sale, but I think I will be keeping this one for quite awhile. I want to get it running and driving and leave it in its current condition. My PM box filled up the first day I posted the car with some very interesting offers. I showed my wife some pictures of some of the fully restored cars plus cash I was offered for this car and now she really thinks I am nuts. :D |
Holy Cow, don't let Mary Ann, FIREDup6975 find out about this.
