2022 Pontiac V8 Powered Class Racing
Won't be long 'til the 2022 season will begin.
Here's the NHRA nat event schedule. Kicks off in the middle of Feb, @ Pomona. https://www.nhra.com/schedule/2022 The Lucas Oil Series div schedule begins Feb 11 @ South Georgia. https://www.nhra.com/news/2021/nhra-...-2022-schedule We've lost quite a few Pontiac racers in the last few years, to other brands. :( But, there are still a few die-hard Pontiac class racers out there. So, there should be plenty of races to report on, where one or more Pontiac V8 powered class cars are running. |

Only a month to go
5 Attachment(s)
That's right. The NHRA Lucas Oil Series will kick off next month @ SGMP, in div 2.
The next week is the Winter Nats in Pomona. So far, there are 3 Pontiacs on the Stock pre-entry list. C.W. Hoefer has the strong running '73 D-port 455 Formula. Lindy Lindholm is listed with his '74 Bird, which was stolen. But as I posted, Leo Glasbrenner found it & completely restored it & put it back into top race condition. He surprised Lindy with it at a race. And it seemed to run just fine. Leo is listed with his '68 Bird. But he told me over the phone that he had it apart, doing a lot of upgrades & probably wouldn't have it on a track 'til later in the season. We'll see. https://www.nhraeventreg.com/ListEve...=PC1&cc=8&rn=1 https://www.nhra.com/schedule/2022/n...nals-presented Was also hoping Tommy Brown would make it, with his '74 Lemans. He did run some last year. Last race I show him at was the Mar div 7 race @ Vegas. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r=100#indextop No SS Pontiacs on the list, yet. Was hoping to see Larry Maxwell, Keri Angeles Pari, & Art Peterson on the list. But, they might make it. Kinda sad to see how many fewer Pontiacs enter the Pomona races than just a few years ago. :( The next week is the Ariz Nats, @ Wild Horse Pass. Same Stockers are pre-entered, plus Ryan Warter's '75 Bird, from the Northwest. https://www.nhraeventreg.com/ListEve...=PA1&cc=8&rn=2 https://www.nhra.com/schedule/2022/n...zona-nationals That same weekend, there is a div 4 race at No Problem Raceway, in South Louisiana. Looked for race flyers for these races. Didn't find much. Anyhow, the following week is the "Baby Gators" race, then the Gators the next week. Yeah, lots of class racing action is only about a month away ! :) https://gainesvilleraceway.com/racing/ |
AZ Stock/SS Race
The AZ Stock/SS Association is holding a race @ Tucson Dragway, Feb 5 & 6.
Includes 2 complete races, with separate payouts both days. $1200 to win. $500 RU, plus round money. http://classracer.com/classforum/sho...55&postcount=7 There are now several of these Stock/SS groups around the country. Hope they all succeed. |
AZ Stock/SS Race
It's this weekend. Hope some of the div 7 Pontiac powered cars will be racing.

Winter Nats Pre-entry List
John Schloe, Ryan Schloe, & Tommy Brown are now also on the Stock list.
https://www.nhraeventreg.com/ListEve...=PC1&cc=8&rn=1 Keri Angeles & Art Peterson are now on the SS list. https://www.nhraeventreg.com/ListEve...=PC1&cc=7&rn=1 |
Div 2 Race @ SGMP
Here's the run schedule.
Qualifying begins Fri. https://www.facebook.com/NHRASouthea...733921/?type=3 I assume Michael Brand will have his Bird there. Don't know about any others. |
I didn't look at the list yet, but if Michael is in Super Stock he will be running his Cobra Jet.
If he is in Stock then the 73 455SD Formula. |

Class Racer Nats
Here's the flyer for the big Class Racer Nats race, which will be in July. I assume it's has the biggest purse of any Stock/SS only, event of the year.

SGMP Div 2 Opener
Michael Brand has the only Pontiac powered Stocker entered. He was #14 on the Q-list. No Pontiac SS cars entered.
http://classracer.com/classforum/sho...66&postcount=4 As mentioned, the Tankersley family have 3 Pontiacs entered. |

I won’t be racing in Bowling Green this year but if you made the trip up, I’d head out there (without my car) and hang out for the weekend. It would be good to see ya at a race. |
SGMP Div 2 Race

Michael Brand ended Fri qualifying in #7 position, with a 10.606.
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop I think this is video of today's action. S/G is running as I'm posting this. http://classracer.com/classforum/sho...294#post657294 |
SGMP Div 2 Race
Michael Brand won his 1st round of Stock.
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop Kevin MacNicol & Laurel Morris were 1st round winners, in S/ST. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop Rain ended racing early. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop |
SGMP Div 2 Race
DRC posted this S/ST Q-list, which shows Laurel Morris #2 & Kevin MacNicol #3. Apparently these cars are all 1st round winners & are qualified based on how close they run to 10.90, without going quicker, followed by those closest to 10.90 that went quicker than 10.90.
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop Haven't found any results from today's action, yet. |
Winter Nats
In today's Stock qualifying, Lindy Lindholm was #14, C.W. Hoefer was #20, & Tommy Brown was #51.
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop In SS, Keri Angeles was #37 & Art Peterson was #44. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop |

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r=100#indextop In SS, Keri Angeles was #41 & Art Peterson #47. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r=100#indextop After the 1st round of Stock & SS elims, C.W. Hoefer & Lindy Lindholm are the only Pontiac powered survivors. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop |
Winter Nats
C.W. Hoefer made it to round 3. Cut a good light, but broke. :(

Saw John this morning.Keri lost a engine on the launch. He said they are going back to the 400 but he is looking into a aftermarket block.Tom

Looks like Leo Glasbrenner won Stock @ the Pomona NHRA Winternationals.
|
Uh oh.....is he running a Camaro now? I see conflicting listings on the web.

So, I have to assume he's getting completely away from Pontiac power. :( Probably sent in his entries to some early races, not knowing exactly when he'd be able to race the Bird. That's why some of the pre-entry lists show him driving the '68 Bird Stocker. OR, I suppose he could have already sold it. Only talked to him once. |
No Problem & Baby Gators
The div 4 race is this week, in South Louisiana, & the Baby Gators race is next week.
Here are the run schedules. https://www.nhra.net/2022/nhraracer/...s/drs_LO41.pdf https://www.nhra.net/2022/nhraracer/...s/drs_LO22.pdf |
AZ Nats
C.W. Hoefer, Ryan Warter & Brad Burton are on the Stock pre-entry list. Scott Burton is on the SS list. Leo is also on the Stock list. But as we've seen, he may not be driving the '68 Bird.
https://www.nhraeventreg.com/ListEve...=PA1&cc=8&rn=2 Looks like there is also a div 7 Lucas Oil Series race in AZ next week. https://www.nhra.net/2022/nhraracer/...and%20LO72.pdf |

Div 4 @ Belle Rose
In Stock, Devon Dioguardi was #21 in the Mission Garage '74 SD455 T/A. Todd Kuhn was #49. Todd is listed driving a '71 GTO. I think that's a misprint. He's been driving a '70 GTO for quite a few years.
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop In SS, J.B. Clegg was #16, in the '73 SD455 Bird which John Clegg bought new. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop |
AZ Nats
After 2 rounds of elims, Brad Burton & Ryan Warter have the only Pontiac powered cars still in the show.

Div 2 & 7
The Baby Gators kicks off at 9am GA time, with Stock Q-1.

Div 7
Looks like there are 5 Pontiac powered cars on the Stock Q-list. The drivers are: Brad Burton, C.W. Hoefer, Rick Unterseh, Ryan Warter, & Tommy Brown.
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r=100#indextop Scott Burton was #3 on the SS list. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r=100#indextop |

YouTube Show
Some of you guys may enjoy this series of programs.
A couple of racers interview other racers. They talk about a variety of class racing subjects. I have enjoyed several of the shows. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ExAjWJbSpY |
Div 7
The same 5 Pontiacs are on the Stock Q-list for the 2nd race of this doubleheader event. Rick Unterseh is #7, in his '81 301T Bird. He reported a blown head gasket during 1st race qualifying.
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop Scott Burton is #1 on the SS Q-list. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop Notice how most all Stock & SS racers now try to NOT run a sec under their index, at most races. It is because of NHRA's system for increasing the horsepower factor on engine combos. To me, it's a rather complicated system. At SOME races, 1.2 sec under gets an automatic hp factor increase. From what little I've read, some of the 1 sec or more under runs are also considered in determining what combos get hp added to their combo. https://www.nhraracer.com/content/ge...633&zoneid=132 |
Leo Interview
Here's another driver interview some of you may enjoy.
It's Leo Glasbrenner. Most of you will remember that he raced a '68 Bird Stocker & a Pontiac powered 4th gen GT Bird. He's now racing late model stuff, but still has the '68. Found out from this interview that his 1st drag car was his '69 Judge street car. He talks a lot about his transmission shop, Remac Transmissions. Goes into a lot of detail about his racing trans that he races & sells. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xc3OrX5hWz8&t=3014s |
Brad Wins Again !
Brad Burton also won the 2nd race of the div 7 doubleheader ! :hooray:
https://www.nhra.com/results/2022/lu...05/live-timing That's a great weekend of racing, with Pontiac power. No doubt, one he'll always remember. |
