I have a 67 GTO Conv with a three speed Dearborn (Ford) tranny. I was wondering if anybody out there has this tranny and the Hurst shifter. I'm trying to replace either the rubber grommets that go in the shifter arm holes and the tranny arm holes that the shifter rods go into. I bought the Hurst pit pack so I could replace the bushings but it appears that the bushings do not fit in the shifter arm holes. On this transmission am I supposed to use the OE Rubber Grommets that Mr Gasket sells or the Hurst pit pack? If it is the OE Rubber Grommets, do I use the Ford grommets or the GM grommets?

Ok, I've figured out that I need both the grommets on the shifter arm holes and the trannt arm holes. The question I have now is where can I get the bushings (either nylon or metal) for the same holes since the Hurst pit pack is too large?
|
I have the same problem on my '67 Lemans with the three speed.
I look forward to someone posting the answer...... Steve |
Hurst offers a factory rebuild service for old shifters, you can read about it at
http://www.mrgasket.com/hurstfaq.htm Is your shifter original equipment? On their webpage it talks a little about Hurst shifters that came as original equipment, and it says the linkage was different from aftermarket Hurst shifters. That may be the problem. They also have a tech support telephone number you can call at 216.688.8300 ext. 5, 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. EST or fax 216.688.8306 |
My suggestion would be to give Peter Serio a call or email. He offers a rebuild service for hurst shifters as well as gauge services. www.precisionpontiac.com He might just be able to help you out. He posts here sometimes as well.

The original "factory" shifter for all of the 1964 thru 72 GTOs were all
built under contract by Hurst for General Motors(Pontiac). They were all Hurst but Pontiac decided to make their own shift linkage to save money. (They could easily make linkage as they made whole cars!) The rods & levers they made were designed for long life underneath a street driven car with little to no maintenance. They decided to "bush" the ends of the 3 rods in rubber to A.) keep them quiet, (prevent rattles on high mileage cars; & B.) to absorb vibration and noise from the transmission gears & prevent this noise from coming up thru the shifter & making faint whirring &/or rattling noises inside of the car with the windows rolled up @ 70MPH on the freeways. http://images.andale.com/f2/130/124/...terLevers1.jpg The replacement bushings that Hurst sells today, (as their "pit-pack") are NOT DESIGNED, & WILL NOT FIT any of the Factory OEM Hurst shifters, these partshttp://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_frown.gifthe pit-pack) are designed for aftermarket replacement Hurst shifters because the holes in the shifter levers are a different size so the bushing will fit. I hope this helps clear up any confusion on what works & what will not. Peter Serio Owner, Precision Pontiac |
OH, one more thing; on the post above, I am speking about all of the 1967 thru 1972 "OEM" shifters, the early(1964 thru 1966) shifters WILL accept the PIT-PACK service bushings & are designed so that you CAN replace them every couple of years or so if you need to. They come in steel, & also white Nylon, as with the 67 & up shifters, noise inside of the car can be a factor, if you want it quiet inside of your car with the windows up & the A/C on then, USE THE NYLON BUSHINGS!!! If you drag-race or if you don't care about the noise, or you don't have A/C, then you can RUN THE STEEL BUSHINGS!!! As you decide.

Here is a 1965 GTO 4 speed Shifter, you can see the hole is the proper diameter to use the bushings out of the Pit-Pack. The 67 & up OEM shifter levers holes are no bigger around than the OEM rod ends. This is why you can't use the pit-pack's pieces on anything past 1967 when your running an Original shifter in your GTO.

Peter,
That's great information that you gave! Thanks for the lengthy replies and pictures. The only question I have then is, On my 67 GTO should I just replace the OE rubber grommets on the shifter arms and tranny arms with new and that's it? Or, it appears in the restoration guide that they also used a bushing (like the pit pack), that fits into the outer circle of the grommet, as a spacer between the shift rod and shifter arms and tranny arms to reduce the space? |
Hi, you can't replace the rubber on the shifter because the "service" part is no longer available. 2nd question: & there is NO bushing that goes in the hole on the 67 & up shifters. There is no way to put any bushing in the hole. As it is the exact same size as the rod ends(adjusters). It is impossible to replace the rubber molded ends on the transmission levers. There were never any parts to replace them offered by GM that I am aware of, (only NOS levers; if they can be found). I made new levers for the 1-2 & 3-4 shifts for all 67 & 68 w/4speeds. I decided to make them so that they accept the bushing( http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gifPit-pack) instead of the rubber molded ends.

3rd question: A thin washer goes on the side of the OEM molded rubber, one on each of the 3 levers.

Well, I don't know if Hurst (Mr. Gasket) is lying to me but they sell a OE rubber grommet for GM part #2807186. They are claiming that those are the grommets that go on the arms. Do you know of that part?
|
Hi, Yes I am aware of that part #280-7186. They(Hurst, Mr. Gasket) used to sell a replacement rubber piece that would fit into the openings of the 1967 & up OEM 3 & 4 spd. shifter levers, (again these parts did not look anything like the original molded part, but they would fit). I tried to order some of them a month ago & I was sent a small amount of white Nylon washers? When I asked what these were for, they said "these are the replacements for the rubber grommets which are no longer available". The direction I got was that you put a washer on one side of the lever(trunnion) & another washer on the other side & then you put the spring clip back on. This is all they(Hurst)Mr.Gasket offer as of 7-22-03. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_frown.gif

I just received a reply from a technician at Mr. Gasket about the rubber grommet they have lited online and in their catalogs. According to them part number 2807186 is the rubber grommet that goes into the shifter and tranny arm holes. I ordered it through Jegs under their part # 530-280-7186, for those that may need it.
|
Hi, I also ordered the "bushings" from Jegs last month & this is what I was sent:

That blows! For a replacement part that looks nothing like a rubber grommet! Well, I guess it will have to do it's either those or nothing!
Thanks for all your help Peter I really appreciate it. |
Here is a rundown so far of what we have:
#1 OEM NOS shifter lever http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_smile.gif #2 OEM 4 spd shifter lever with original rubber totally removed http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_cool.gif #3 replacement rubber "grommet" they used to offer http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gif #4 current "replacement" washer for part #3 http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_frown.gif http://images.andale.com/f2/130/124/...ldedLevers.jpg Peter Serio Owner, Precision Pontiac |
Actually this issue is not such a big trauma, as the original directions
show clearly that you need to slice off the OEM rubber grommets anyway. If your GM (factory) rods are all worn-out, loose & sloppy; then I'd just get the new PYs Hurst KPO linkage kit http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gif. http://images.andale.com/f2/130/124/...tionSheet1.jpg Peter Serio Owner, Precision Pontiac |
Below are the original directions from that kit, you can see clearly
they(Hurst) had you cut & remove the OEM rubber anyway. So if it's already gone your ahead of the game. NOTE the KPO kit(s) are a VAST improvement over the stock GM linkage IMHO http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif http://images.andale.com/f2/130/124/...ctionSheet.jpg Peter Serio Owner, Precision Pontiac |
OK , I just received a phone call from Jegs stating that the replacement plastic bushings that you got to replace the rubber grommets are now not available. I looked in the PY catalog for the KPO linkage kit, but they only list for a 67-68 four speed and that's discontinued. I also looked in all the rest of my Pontiac magazines and they do not list a 3-spd KPO linkage kit.
Peter, I was wondering if either A)you might know which KPO linkage kit in the Hurst catalog would work for my Dearborn 3-spd manual(don't know if I should look up Ford or Pontiac for that tranny), or B)would you be wiling to part with any of the rubber grommets that you already have. I already have the rubber grommets removed from my shifter arms, but the originals are still in the tranny arms. Also, with a new linkage kit would it allow for the already smaller holes in the shifter arm holes that don't accept the Hurst Pit Pack. |
Hi, Dan please tell me again what year, make & model car you have. & is it all original, the factory Ford cast iron, 9 bolt top-plate; HD 3 speed transmission, factory round handle OEM shifter, too?
I might have one NOS kit left from Hurst, a vintage 3 speed KPO, many people do not know this but Hurst also made KPO kits for all of the 3 speed applications when the factory offered a Hurst in the car from Pontiac even the(GTO). Most people went for the 4 speed, but this was $184 extra & no everybody could afford it back then. They did not make many GTOs with the stock 3 speed in them, but there are still a few out there, & I think some people want to "keep the car 100% to the build sheet". http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gif http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gif Peter Serio Owner, Precision Pontiac |

Peter,
It is an original 1967 GTO Convertible, 400, HD Ford 3-spd manual 9-bolt top cover and it looks like an extension housing from a Saginaw (but it's not). The car is completely #'s matching except for the frame which I had to replace because it was completely rotted out behind the fron clip. This was my dad's car who has passed away and originality is very important to me. Any help with a KPO kit would be great. Dan |
