I can show 1 for 1 the opposite if not more, don't even go there...

Did someone say the Cobra wasn't faster anyways??

&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt; Can't argue with these numbers...

David Jones 12-08-2004 11:36 AM

Thats a great story, but. Had they been lined up side by side at a drag strip and the Cobra won I'd say it meant something. To many variables in the way the story was told to really mean anything. You reckon the Cobra owner would have posted anything other than a "kill" on an SVT website.

68GTOConv 12-08-2004 01:02 PM

It's impossible to continue reading that when SVT Boy claims that GTO's cannot outrun Mach 1's. Please .... What's next, the fart can exhaust?

I'll put any stock '04 GTO (even the automatic) up against any stock Mustang built during the longest continuous production period of the legendary Mach 1 by Ford.

I'll even handicap the GTO by having me drive it (I've got one days experience on a dragstrip), and I'll let you drive the Mach 1 (rumor has it you know what you're doing...

Confidence and fact.

You could beat Danny every time under the same conditions, also.

And I am confident that Danny is very good on the drag strip.

There wasn't a factory stock Mach 1 built in that time frame that could touch any stock factory GTO ever built. Even the '74 GTO with the 350 and an automatic could blow the doors off those Mach 1's.

Goathead 12-08-2004 07:06 PM

So, Champ, let me get this right. You will race a bone stock 12.99 Mach One (2004 Model I must add) that run's in hot temperatures with mass amounts of humidity with your automatic '04 and win the 1/4 mile race every time, right? http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...n_rolleyes.gif

Forget the lights, just plain 1/4 mile ET (so old folks like us can fall asleep at the lights http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_smile.gif ).... http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_smile.gif

Are you absolutely positive pure stock '04 ?... http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...n_rolleyes.gif

You sure? http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...n_rolleyes.gif http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_smile.gif

I do have a problem believing a new stock Mach 1 Mustang would touch a 12.99 - I would have to call BS on that one.

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

And Champ is absolutely, positively correct.

The original Mach 1 was introduced in 1969 as body style 63C, body code 02 and ran until 1970 before being replaced. 2 years.

The next version was body code 05, body style 63R witch ran from 1971 - 1973. 3 years.

Then Ford committed a heinous crime to this venerable name, by reintroducing it in the Pinto/Mustang of 1974. At least they did put that powerful German built 105 HP V6 in to replace the Pinto's 2.3 liter 4 cylinder powerplant that was standard fare for the Mustang. This version lasted through the 1978 model, or 5 years.

http://www.mach1registry.com/history/photos/77m2m1.jpg

This was a trick statement from the beginning, but what the heck... http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gif I got ya'll going on that one, and it gave me an opportunity to showcase that heralded period of Mustang production when NO V8's were available in a Mustang despite using the name Mach 1.

And Danny, tell me you could beat me while I was driving any stock GTO in the 1/4 mile with you behind the wheel of a stock 105 HP 6 banger Mustang Mach 1... http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif

Oh big deal! EVERBODY knows that. That is no different than when the once mighty Dodge Charger died a slow and emabarrasing death. Everybody knows by the mid to late 70's the performance era was pretty much over. That's like comparing a Minor League Baseball (MLB) team in the West to Major League Baseball (also MLB) in the East and saying "See,no MLB team in the West has ever beaten an MLB team in the East". Pretty lame Champ. Tell us something we don't already know.

I guess I am glad Pontiac let the GTO die, rather than make it a very limp wristed car with an anemic V6 (imported no less) like Ford did with the Mach 1.

Now Pontiac has brought back a great performing, great handling V8 RWD car and all we here from the peanut gallery is that the styling should be different and that they are defaming the GTO name.

Most of these same folks go on at length that Pontiac should do like Ford with the Mustang. Well, I just showed you what Ford did with the Mustang Mach 1. And I think that is a more heinous thing than what Pontiac did.

rabon008 12-12-2004 10:06 AM

Yes, and that story (on the SVT forum) is almost the exact opposite of what happened with my '04 GTO. I was getting ON the interstate in my BLACK '04 GTO and the Cobra was behind ME revving his engine while we waited for the turn light. When we took off, he couldn't even TOUCH me as we went uphill on the freeway entrance ramp...fact is, I didn't know it was a Cobra until I backed my Goat down to cruising speed and ALLOWED him to pass me, then I saw the stampings and smiled real big...now that's a true story...that Ford forum guy must be dreaming because the Cobra behind me wasn't even close to catching me...but maybe the Ford guys who are trolling on this forum will say...oh, but it was because you were going uphill, or some lame excuse...

Grow some balls, screw the interstate and show up at the track. Street racing is not real racing.....especially just flooring it on the fly.... http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...n_rolleyes.gif

rabon008 12-12-2004 07:22 PM

I never said anything about flooring it on the fly. I was ahead of the guy but we took off from a light and I left him...EASILY. That's a fact...like it or not...

Sure, interstate racing isn't real racing, I'll grant you that. The guy in the Cobra probably didn't know how to drive it that's for sure because I am certainly not the racing expert that many of you guys are (and I mean that sincerely). Nevertheless, the story is true no matter how many Ford fans want to think its not.

rabon008 12-12-2004 07:34 PM

As to whether it was an 03/04 Cobra, I'm no Ford expert but it looked like an '03, the stampings were on the rocker panels and on the rear facia if that means anything to you Ford guys. Doesn't mean anything to me.

68GTOConv 12-13-2004 09:57 AM

You do have to watch out for the blown Cobras - Although a bit weak stock, they can make TONS of power for very little money. Smaller pulley, retune, exhaust ... watch out. Same goes for the Lightning trucks.

But in general, when a GT/Cobra person tells me that outran an LS1, I ask the same question &gt;&gt; "Are you sure the other driver knew you guys were racing?"
