I thought of this as I recently had another GTO slip through my greedy fingers.

A local guy, friend of a friend, needs to sell his 69 GTO. It's got a pretty solid body from the firewall back. Most of the front clip was sold, along with the engine. So, its a solid body, but it is a GTO. The guy says he wants $1200. Not bad for what was there, but it didn't exactly make me want to whip out the check book. I said, I'll take a pass and the guy says he'd rather keep the car anyway. Everyone's happy.

Just got a call from my buddy and the guy sold the car for $400. I nearly died. Thank god I have my 70 or else I might have been upset. Somebody got a really killer deal on goat!!

A long time ago, 1979 or so, a buddy and I went to look at a 74 SD TA. It had a little abuse but was quite complete for around $3000. It was white with blue decals and interior (I think) with an automatic. I have been kicking myself for 26 years over that one. The price was fair for the time and place but I was a 21 year old with a 75 TA and no extra money. That may be the only time I get to test drive a SD...still bummed.

Speaking of T/A's I had a buddy who found a 71 T/A while doing some searching throught the farmlands of Illinois. My buddy and the owner agreed on a deal. My friend was to come back the next day and haul it home. Only when he came back, the owner and the car were gone. The owner got cold feet and decided to hide, along with the car. Needless to say, my friend is still pissed about that one!!

had an ebayone slip away, not pontiac, but a good deal. 36 chevy sedan, needed resto, but original, complete, and ran and drove. no reserve and around $100 start. the guy loaded tons of pictures but none of them came up correct on the auction. I saved the pictures and opened them up on the computer, it looked well worth the money. had my bid at $350, 15 minutes before the end of the auction I was outbid, the only other bid. I waited till the last minute to outbid, and my computer crapped out. got back on just to see the auction ended. after kicking and screaming, I bought a new computer the next day.

I was looking for a 4spd '67 GTO convert once, I found one and started to ask about it when the guys phone rang, while he was on the phone I went out to look at it, found it totally stripped and had been hit hard just behind the drivers door. I went back in and because of what I saw, I never asked any further questions. A couple months later I found out that he had sold the car, as it turned out, it was a complete (in boxes) 1967 GTO convert, RamAir 4spd car loaded with tons of options. He sold it with a complete new frame and whole left side of another car. However, I later ended up buying a '67 HO, M21 4spd convert so all is not lost. ;-)

Oh ya, should I tell about the '69 Judge convert I sold in 1983 for a grand, naaa, cause that still makes me sick to think about it.

Al, that car is alive in a friend's shop down here in Vancouver. He is in the process of gathering NOS parts to do it right. He has been offered $80K as is sits, like you saw it.

The ones that got away....

1. High school 1993/94. A kid in my class tells me about his 67 GTO that he brought up from his uncles farm down in Texas. I ask if he wants to sell it. He says no he is restoring it. Later on I found out he tried selling it and no one wanted it so he let it go to his neighbor for $500. I went to his neighbor but he wouldn't sell it. It was mostly a shell but was solid.

2. I actually owned this one. 1969 GP 428 H.O. automatic 3.55 open diff. Factory air shocks (missing). Power disc brakes. Black with no vinyl top and white interior. Solid Missouri car. Sold it for $1300 to a girl who was 4'11" and used it as daily transportation.

3. Recieved a claimed 66 tri-power intake and carbs as partial trade for a car I had. Throttle shafts were seized. Ended up selling it for $250.

Here is my "one that got away" story...

I came across a '69 GTO Judge convertible back in 1986. I had wanted one of these for years but never thought I would find one, let alone locally. It was sitting on a used car lot that seemed to also sell muscle cars. It was a "field" car, had been sitting in some guys yard for 10 years, but it was fairly solid - though rusty, all the parts were there, it only had 43,000 miles on it, numbers matching everything, and it still ran! I even got to test drive it - awesome!!

$2500 was the firm asking price. Unfortunately, I only could come up with $1500 because I was in the middle of restoring my '71 Firebird at the time. He offered to take what I had as a deposit if I could come up with the rest ($1000) in a few weeks. I agreed, paid him, got my receipt, wrote down the VIN, and left to find a way to come up with the rest of the money.

Two weeks later I show up with the $1000 I still owed him. The car is gone and so is the owner of the place. I am told he is on vacation and the car is not on the lot because I had bought it. A week later I show up again. The place is closed. He went out of business, filed bankrupcy and took off. I later found out he sold the car to someone else for more money right after I bought it.

I was robbed of my dream car and my money. To make it worse, a few days later I received a package back from Pontiac (I had sent them the VIN) - they verified it was a real Judge convertible that was originally sold 20 miles from my house. I kicked myself for years for not getting a loan or borrowing the extra cash that day instead of waiting like I did...

Then there was the '69 T/A in the middle of a restoration, with ALL of the NOS parts (fenders, quarters, chrome, etc.) still in the boxes, for $2200 or best offer. I passed on that one at the time but I later regretted that decision also...

Ya, I know, I've talked with him (Joe) a couple of times since. Have always regretted that one though. Should have asked Mark a little more about the car at the time. Mark says he told me but I would have sold the '67 plum mist convert to have gotten that car if I'd known it was a RA car. Not only that, Mark said it was featured in a magazine before it went to Canada to it's original owner too back in 1967.
Now if I could only find that '69 Judge convert I sold in 1983. I know where it was last seen so I'm going to go there and start asking questions.

There was a locally sponsored 63 Super Duty in the town I live in(Boaz,AL) when I was a kid. It was sponsored by San Ann gas stations and ran as the San Ann Special.It ran at Green Valley Dragstrip in Gadsden,AL and a lot of other tracks.The car used to be on display at the main San Ann station when it was not being raced and was very well known in this area. I got to know the owner of the car years ago and he told me he got tired of racing it and sold it in 1976 for $500.00. It was sold to a man in Centre,AL who owned an auto parts store and a lot of hot Pontiacs. It was supposedly sold to a collecter up north.Does anybody know anything about this car? I have access to pictures of this car in its racing heyday.This car was painted with pink and green accents as this was San Ann Gasolines colors. Across the decklid was painted :POWERED BY SAN ANN GASOLINE,which was funny to locals as San Ann had a bad rap for poor quality fuel and the fact that they were mixing nitro in the fuel for the race car.Would love to hear from someone that it is still alive and well.

When I was 17 I bought a rough 68 bird. 6 months later my buddy sold his pristine, unmolested 65 lemans for $2300 bucks. I could have died. If I'd have just waited 6 mos! This was in 1988. In 1990 I bought my 67 GTO for $1000. She didn't get away...

About 30 years ago, a 1954 Buick Skylark for $1800.00. I even test drove it. Could'nt make up my mind in time and missed it.

i sold my 77 t/a that needed work for $350.about 3 yrs ago.i can't stop thinking about it.went to an old bone yard i found about 10 yrs ago.the old guy says $200 every time i ask about a car.the best part is every car was early 70's and down.he had 5 or 6 gto's 66 & 67,10 or 12 lemans tempests,50's pontiac's,fords mopars,chevys,like a junk yard dream.back then i didn't have any money.i went back a couple yrs later.all gone.every thing.found out every thing was crushed for scrap.

1978 Gold SE Trans Am ....black interior, WS6 package, snowflakes, auto, air cond. 400 (recently rebuilt), etc etc. Bought this car from a friend (same friend who I bought my current car off of) for $200. It sat in the yard for 2 months and all we did with it was swap out the carb with the on on our 1980. We sold it to a guy in the county for $800. Car was in pretty good shape but definitely needed money put into it and we did not have the money. About 1979 a guy I worked with had a red 73SD 4spd with Koni shocks and 50series T/A's. The car was CHERRY! He wanted $3500. That just seemed like SO MUCH $ for a used car.

1986 I had a 67 Cougar, but I wanted a GTO. Preferably a 69. I read in the paper about a 69 Judge, so I go look. He was asking $1200 for it, it was a numbers matching RA IV 4 speed. He was the second owner of it, and just didnt have room for it anymore, plus he needed money.

I was 16 and didnt have $1200. He didnt want a trade so I told my dad about it. He said it would never be worth more than $2500 even if we fixed it up. I tried everything to get that car, it had a little rust but nothing major, a few dents and a decent interior. Carousel red with out hideaways. I missed that one, and a 70 400 convertable for $1500, but scored my 70 455 HO hardtop for $1000 back in 93. I still wish I had that Judge, it pains me to think about it even now almost 20 years later.

I just remembered I know of a 70 RA III TA 3rd owner who told me last time we talked he would take $5k for it. Needs work but no rust... No I wont tell you either...

In 1988 i went to look at a 63 lemans with a 428 in it.I had seen the car a couple of times and knew it was pretty damn fast,i was told it went a 10:96 at commerce with slicks and open headers[street car].When i looked at the car it had a carb problem and the owner wanted to fix the problem before i pick it up.Well 3 weeks went by and i told him i would take the car anyway because i would buy a new carb and he say no the car was leaving untill it was right.Well STUPID me i decide to build a 455 for my T/A and race it and not buy the lemans.About 3 years ago i was talking to the guy who bought the car new in 1963 and put the 428 in the car and he said the car would run a low 11 seconds and was originally a 326 HO car.And i could have boughtit for $3500 so i get the dumba** of the decade award.

I have two stories one did not get away and I was a day late and but not a dollar short on the other.

My first story is the car you see in my signature picture. I bought it in 1988 for $500 after a buddy told him the 350 chevy that it had in it was blown up. All that was wrong was the rochester 2 barrels floats were stuck and it wet down the cylinder walls. Raced the car with a 500 cfm 2 barrel and used to run 14.80s at palmdale in So. Cal. The car was great at the street races too. Very unsuspecting people there. Car now has the proper pontiac in its place.

My other story was last week at the Portland OR swapmeet a real PHS documented GTO in need of a resto, but the body looked to be in pretty good condition and it had an engine. I dont know if it was original or not sold for $2900. I was floored when I seen the price and the sold sign.

Back in 1974 a local guy shows up with a brand new 1974 Formula 350, in Denver Gold with the Deluxe black interior, orange stripe, and spoiler. It was the most beautiful Firebird we had ever seen. By November of 1975, it was sitting on the used lot of the local Pontiac dealer and we bought it. While it looked great, power was lacking. The low compression 2 barrell 350 was less than exciting, but the dual exhuast did sound good. As time went on, we bought some property in the country and I convinced the wife that we needed a pick up. Yes, you guessed it, we traded the 'bird on a new truck and I have not heard the end of it to this day.

To try and make ammends I found another 74 Formula for sale in the mid 80's. It was a 455 model with standard interior and had not been treated well. I sold the 400 that came with it and loacted a 74 455 out of a Gran Ville. After a couple of false starts over many years, we finally threw in the towel and parted out the rusty beast. Now I see thay are making some of the more "unusual" patch panels we needed on that second car.

Not only did I let the nice one get away, I let it's replacement get away as well. We have decided to find a nice driver quality 74 Formula one of these days. We're not ready to buy just yet, but are getting close. That one will not slip away.

This one isn't a Pontiac, but it would have been sweet. When going to school in Houston in 1986 I went and looked at a 1970 Chevelle SS396 convertible. A man had it in his garage along with several very old Cadillacs(20's and 30's). It was his sons who had left it there in pieces and gone to Germany and he wanted it gone. It was a real SS and had two engines, two cowl induction hoods and two complete interiors. It had no rust or damage. He wanted $400, but we didn't have a trailer(lived in an apartment) or garage. Had to say no. Ouch.

There are two for me, both GTO's...

The first (1981): a GORGEOUS '67 GTO with its original four speed, but had a '71 400 engine. Needed interior work & had major oil/trans leaks. Passed on it at $1500 because "it had the wrong motor" & my mechanical skills needed honing. UGH!

The second & most painful (April 1982): a BONA-FIDE '72 GTO with a 455 HO & automatic (both original) for $650!! I bought a '69 GTO from the same owner INSTEAD because I just had to have a stick car.

I've had a couple of cars I let get away.

Around 1987, I found a gold 72 GTO 455HO 4-spd car with a/c. It had only 33K original miles and was still owned by the original owner. The guy lived in a small house in Concord NC. The car was stored in a little wood frame garage with a clay floor. Other than a little surface rust on hte bottom, it was cherry. At the time, he wanted a rediculous price for it ($10K). Right after a major hurricane swept through NC, he bought a new car and decided to sell it for $6K. The car was undamaged, but our yard was a wreck. My wife was a social worker, and the local office had to provide support to FEMA. Anyway, she was overworked and stressed, and said "no". A few months later, she reconsidered, but it was already gone.

Another was a 69 Judge convertible I ran across. The car was halfway solid, but the original drivetrain was missing. It was originally light green, but the owners had added dark green over portions of it, giving it a camoflage paint job. It was $1500. Storage issues were the main reason I passed, plus I my wife would have a heart attack if I parked that thing in the driveway.

I also passed on a 73 SD455 Formula for $5K in nice shape for $5500 because I had just bought my 74 SD455 4-spd a month earlier.

I guy I knew at college drove a 69' Chevelle as his daily driver. I believe it was at one time a 396 SS car. It had a 350/350 in it at the time he was driving it. I ran into him a few years later and I asked if he still had the Chevelle. He said he did but didn't drive it. He also said he had a 70' GTO in pieces that had a 455 in it. He wanted $2000.00 for both. At the time I was about to buy a house and I was strapped for cash so I passed. I told a friend about that deal who told his Dad who was looking for a new project. In 1983 I was 16 and saw a '67 Firebird convertible at a Vermont flea market. It was maifare maize, and black, with a 4spd 326. I thought it was the coolest car I had ever seen, but I couldn't figure out how to buy it. I wanted to beg my parents for it, but they had just bought me grandma's '72 LTD (2dr 429 car) so I didn't want to seem ungrateful.

After circling classifieds for years, when I got out of college, I figured I could finally own a Firebird convertible. I called on this '69 six times and the phone just rang and rang. Nobody ever answered.

I hope you don't mind a non Poncho one.:o My brother and I went down the street to look at this nice little 1967 Comet. It was this ugly bage color with about the same color interior. I looked all original and it had some old aluminium slotted mags on it and was in VERY good condition. It was a four speed top loader with a 9" posi unit too. We got to talking to the guy and he popped the hood and it was an original 390 car (original block etc.) and someone had put a set of headers, a NICE soild lifter cam and a single plane manifold with a 800cfm double pumper on it. The car was sweet! It looked like some old early '70's hot rod that had been set away for years in storage... and that's what it was. We talked to the guy and he had found it at an estate sale in a garage here local and he had just had a kid and needed the money. This car was GREAT. He wanted $1,500 for it! We were sick! Neither of us had the cash to put together to buy it! my brother had just bought my Desert Eagle .44 Mag a couple months before from me and I had spent the money on SCHOOL:rolleyes: :D . My brother offered him the gun and we had about $600 cash between us and he couldn't do it he had to have all the cash.:(

The One That Got Away
 

I came into work one day and one of the guys I worked with said he saw a car I might be interested in. It was some sort of white GTO with a funny looking wing on the back. Those were his words not mine. I went and looked at it and I was instantly affixed with the car. It was a 1970 Judge Ram Air 3 4-speed car and the guy knew what he had and removed all the components from it, even the steering wheel as he knew the neighborhood it was in was bad. He had everything to complete the car though right down to the original matching numbers engine and transmission. Anyways, I talked to the guy on the phone about a week later and I had my 74 up for sale so i could buy this thing. He wanted about $2500.00 for it if I remember correctly. I didn't have the cash so I waited until my 74 was gone and then gave him a call about a month after I went and looked at the car. He told me he got tired of it sitting there and sold it to one of his buddies for $800.00 and he was going to cut the car up and make a drag car out of it powered by a BBC. I about died!!!

I had a chance to buy a 74 Firebird Formula back in 88. The car had about 60,000 miles on it with a beutiful body. He had put a 400 built for it with RAIV heads, solid lifter cam, 455 pistons with longer aluminum rods. Also had a M22 muncie and 4.56 posi in it. I could have picked it up for $2500.

I rode in it once, went pretty good but had a heck of a vibration. I found out from the guy that bought it that it had a couple spun main bearings. Oh and he sold the motor for just about what he paid for the whole car.

And why didn't I buy it? It was a choice between that or a H McCormick tractor with a loader that has came in REAL handy for snow removal around the yard and pushing vehicles in the shop.

Way back when I fell in love with Pontiac GTOs especially 66's, I bought my first and only GTO in 1988 which was a 1966 post coupe. I was only 24 years old and didn't know anything about cars. I just had to buy that 66 because I love the look of it WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CAR THAT IS ! After I bought the car for 5500$ cad with a new cheap paint job all over bondo I then looked under the car and realised the floors and frame were very rusty ! What a dummy I was! The car came from salty NY state. Anyway here are the cars I shoulda,coulda and woulda bought if only... Remember that is back in 88 and early 90's : 1974 SD TA for 2500$ good shape too! 1971 GTO JUDGE 455HO for 7500$,1968 GTO RA Solar red with 31 heads in need of total restoration for 1500$ but what a rare car ! 1972 TA 455HO for 3500$ good shape too!

By the way the seller of my 66 GTO told me the car had a 400 in it , later I found out it was an anemic and very tired 75 350 but three years later I acquired more knowledge and found a 66 gto 4 barrel WT 389 for 400$ needed rebuild of course. I no longer have the car but still am looking for another GTO or Transam project.

The ones that got away...Man, oh man...

Jr. high school 1971. We had a 1938 Chevy five-window coupe sitting in a shed behind our house since before I was born. Dad's car and my folks went on their honeymoon in it. Anyway, the head cracked on it around 1954 and it got parked in the shed to get "fixed one of these days." Don't have to tell some of you how it is with a family...things that aren't necessary get put on the back burner. All this time I had big plans for that car...gonna be done up nose-up gasser style like the ones in Hot Rod magazine at the time. Anyway, Dad dies in 1970. I'm riding my bike home from school one year later and meet the coupe coming down the road on a trailer! What the...! Mom says she had no idea that I would want "that old thing".

High school 1975. Two blocks from my house there's this BEAUTIFUL '29 Model A roadster with a full-house flathead that never moves. I mean, this thing was nice. Full-fendered, tuck & roll interior, Evans heads, 3 deuces, hydraulic brakes and chrome reverse wheels. I used to stand around and drool a lot. Anyway, a for sale sign appears one day. Asking price...$1500.00. Might as well have been a million to a kid working in a supermarket after school. Approached Mom about a loan and got "What do you want THAT old thig for? You've got my old Dodge Dart." End of story. It sold a few weeks later and apparantly dropped off the face of the earth, along with the old '38 Chevy.

High school 1976. My buddy's dad was a machine shop owner and a Pontiac guy. Bought a new 1965 Catalina 2+2 convertible and drove it everywhere. Bought a new '72 GTO and parked the 2+2 in the back of the shop. My buddy got his drivers license and that beauty was his! We had a ball in that thing until the motorcycle bug bit him. Car went up for sale to finance a new bike "because chicks dig 'em". Same story...no bread. So the car was sold to some bozo who used and abused the poor thing until he finally blew the 421. Last time I heard it was being used for a dog house and was not for sale, thank you.

There are more, but that's enough for now. They're too painful to think about!

Back in 77, I didn't know anything about Pontiacs yet. Turned down a 73 SD T/A 4spd car. Bought a 71 GTX 440-6 pack car instead. If only I knew.

I was looking through an old Hot Rod mag, this guy must be kicking himself for this, look for the Judge one...

it was 1980, i had three years to go to get my license, my uncle had a 1968 gto, solar red ramair 1 with a chrome nose, he sold it to a cousin at the beach, he totalled it. bye bye dream car. i still kick myself for not being old enough to have taken charge on that one.
come today, my dad is selling his un-restored 1963 catalina post 389 tripower 4 speed to me, (still in great shape), after selling it in 1977, and buying it back a few years ago, i am not letting this one get away. period.

My one I let get away was a 69 GTO. It was not much of a car, the body work was rough and not much was stock about any of it. My budy had some 16 heads reworked and put on the car and new ignition system. Put a 4 speed in after taking out the stock 3 speed. Put a 12 bolt in after blowing up the stock 10 bolt. Bought the car for 1500 and stuck about 2000 into the thing. Got mad at it after trying to adjust the rockers that were fine before he started messing around. Offered the car to me for a $1000. My parents would have killed me so I passed. Sold it to a guy he worked with awhile latter. Man I should have taken the 1000 to him and got my parent mad. At least I would have a GTO that was a runner and some what solid. What I wouldn't do to go back to 1996 and do it again.

66 GTO tri-power 4 speed. Around 98, one of the retirees from my work was thinking about selling it, it was gold, numbers matching (rebuilt tri-power was an add on), tach, console, really tall gears 4.88's? 4.56? Texas car, beautiful gold paint, but the turn off was the chrome had some pitting and the interior, which was recently replaced and as new, was gold. I just couldn't handle the gold. $7500, just what he had into it. I himhawed, and he even found my hotel number as I was out of town for work and called me to see if I was going to take it because he had someone else with cash in hand. Hats off to him for the respectable gesture of "I was here first", but boot in the but for me for passing on that one.
Test driving that car was the only time I have ever been scared behind the wheel of a car.

Back in 1991 I had sold my 66 GTO Tripower 4spd because my then fiance wanted it gone. Well 3 months later I had had enough and she was gone too. Now with no girl and a pocketful of cash I was looking for another muscle car. Didn't matter what it was but had to be a big cubes and a 4spd.

No GTO's were to be found at that time so I was looking at Mopars. At Hooked On Classics in Chanhassen, MN (they have since moved to Watertown, MN) I stumbled onto a really clean 1971 Cuda from Colorado. Red with black interior, 383 billboards, rear wing, window louver, fog lamps, front spoiler, rally wheels, all original drivetrain, sheetmetal, and paint. $3,200.

Naturally I take a pass since it is an automatic. Now the car is worth 20x that.

I ended up with a 68 Roadrunner 383 4spd bench seat 4.10 posi. That car was crazy fast. Sold that 3 years later when I found a suitable GTO replacement and it's been GTO's the rest of the way.

About 9 years ago, during winter, I was rummaging through a local saver and saw an ad for a '66 GP in good condition. I had our house up for sale and we were in discussions on building a new one. Well since the car was so close I went to look at it. Turns out it had a mint CA Turqoise body with matching loaded interior in excellent shape, 8-lugs, re-verb, duals, excellent chrome, very nice. I knew it was well worth the $5K asking price and I also had the cash. But unfortunately I had my GTO and I listened to everyone telling me that it wasn't a good time to get another vehicle with all that was going on with the houses. Just should have went with my gut.

Your story reminds me that about 6 or 7 years ago there was a beautiful 66 GP for sale locally for $5,000. It still had it's original 421 with tripower.

The one that causes me the most pain as far as cars that I couldn't afford to buy, wasn't even a Pontiac, believe it or not.
Back in about 1987 in our local paper someone had a "67 corvette convertible, 4spd., 427/435hp. I believe the ad said it had only about 25,000 miles. The ad was only in the paper for 1 day. Price was $7,500.
Right now there is one on ebay with 1 bid at $139,000, reserve not met.

Bought this 57 Safari & a 60 Bonni 425A stick car for something like $4K around 1986. Lost Safari through divorce sale and Bonni sat and became a parts car ! :(
Thr Safari had been mechanicly restored and was in great shape. Just needed interior detailing and painting. NO rust ! I miss that car even today. I understand they only produced a little over 1,100 Safari's in '57 !!
Just sold the Bonni for $2k severalal months ago. Ran out of room & fortitude.

One Summer day in 1985, I heard a knock on the front door and opened it to find a young guy standing there. He said that he had heard that I liked Pontiacs and had a car that I might be interested in. I followed him to his place and found a well worn '72 GTO sitting in the driveway. It had a bad Earl Scheib paint job (lots of overspray) and had some front end damage. I opened the hood and was startled to find a HO 455 in it. As I looked further, I found it had an M-22 and a 12 bolt posi too. The interior was dirty but in good condition. This was a very restorable car. Well, I tried not to show too much excitement and asked how much he wanted. He had his heart set on $800, but I got it for $700. At the time, I had no place to put it so it sat along the street in front of my house. I had a neightbor who was the town derelict and sat home all day bothering the neighbors. He decided to call the State Police to report I had an unlicensed car sitting along the road. The cop was an A$$ and told me that if I didn't remove it immediately, that I would be ticketed every day until I did. I reluctantly removed the 455 and sold the car to a local kid for $400. I am still crying about that car after 20 yrs.
