Just read through the responses on any of the posts in regard to the new GTO and you will find huge piles of ignorance. I am sure Tails will confirm. They are a bunch of the old school naysayers who think because they own a GTO they own the heritage and are the sole interpreters of what Pontiac should be. In fact I thiunk they are just afraid that the new car will make them less special any more.

That is from TeeJay, who posts here also.

JC455 10-22-2003 10:05 AM

I dunno, except for that last part about less special, I gotta agree w/ him.
I like the new GTO. YES, I like it.
Now that I've said that, I'm sure a bunch of clowns are gonna post what an "idiot" I am for liking something that they don't. Oh well.
Last I checked this was America, and I still have the right to my own thoughts.
If you step back and actually look at all the posts re: the new GTO, you'll find that there are a lot of ignorant comments being made. Why? Has no one ever heard of the phrase "...if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything."?
Say your piece and get on w/ life. This B.S. with constantly making snide, childish remarks every damn time a GTO post or pic is made is F#$king rediculous!!
What really gets me is the "knowledgable" few who make the majority of posts. I've seen so many errors in the "knowledge" they spread that it really lets me know just how old they are. Do I go through pointing out the mistakes? No. I have better things to do with my time. Should I? Maybe, it would help to educate the uninformed, but I'm not the "My way of the highway" police, so I let stuff go.
Come on... I actually own new Pontiacs. There are so many people who wouldn't own one because ..... Good for them. There are a lot of us who are brand loyal to Pontiac.
Maybe you (collectively, not you personally) should take a lesson from Nissan and Oldsmobile. It's better to have some exciting product that people want to buy, than to be extinct.
I'm out...

If I have posted incorrect info I would love to see it. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif

pierced mikey 10-22-2003 10:18 AM

John, I think a lot of the brand loyalty ended when G.M. made the companies go "corporate" and cared less about what the customer wanted and more about sharing parts and saving money for themselves, not the customers. Maybe more people would have accepted the car if it had some kind of throwback to the REAL GTO's and Lutz didn't say that they didn't care about the classical Pontiac owner(or were aiming towards them or whatever). Maybe some would accept it if it had some STYLE. Not "subjective(my ass) style. Of course it would be more widely accepted here if it wasn't just a re-badged car from another country. Maybe some of you can just bend over and take whatever the General gives you, but some of us won't. And Nissan is still making and selling some cars, Olds isn't.

I'll bend over for a Z06 or CTSV, dang did I just say that out loud. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...n_rolleyes.gif

Throwback is RWD, V8, 2+2, Coupe and Name. I think we all agree they could have done a few more things but isn't that enough for now? I know, no.

How is a different nose, different engine (tuned for more HP no less), different suspension (re-tuned), different tires (wider), different colors, different exhaust (dual)..JUST a rebadged car?

Jim Doran 10-22-2003 10:34 AM

I thought it was great the HPP listed it as the #1 fastest GTO 0-60MPH. Matter of fact, it wasn't even close.

- Jim Doran -Some Pics of my 65

HUMBLER 10-22-2003 10:46 AM

Seeing as no one has tested an actual production model we don't know yet.

But, an estimated 5.3 / 5.5 isn't faster?

Jim Doran 10-22-2003 11:16 AM

My choice of words was poor in my last sentence. I agree the 04 GTO is the fastest and none of the prior years was even close.
I was pleased to see my 65 tripower was in the running.

- Jim Doran -Some Pics of my 65

JC455 10-22-2003 11:57 AM

I'll agree that more should have been done to make it more GTO-ish. Even if they did, some would still whine that it doesn't have a real Pontiac engine. It's made in another country, etc.
Hate to break it to the purists, but my 76 Trans Am 455/4 spd had "Made in Canada" stamped all over the parts. Was it still a real American car? Damn right it was!
Would I prefer the GTO be made in the USA? Of Course!!! Give it a couple of years. GM is unleashing some serious hardware currently, and on the horizon, so I don't take anything up the rear. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...s/icon_eek.gif
"Nissan is still in business" Correct. Why? Because they brought out new, improved cars. The Altima saved their bacon (not to mention Renault Auto.). They unleashed the 350Z, Infiniti's version (G35?? Don't remember the designation, but it's a sporty little car), The Morano (seems to be selling like hot cakes), more power for the Altima, etc. Smart decisions. Pontiac is trying to do a similar routine (GM, please don't sell Pontiac to Renault!!). Olds is gone. No viable cars, no sales, no Olds. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_frown.gif
As far as the GTO name goes, the FIA owns it. Ferrari is next up for ownership. It was made great by Pontiac.
Bonneville was made great by Pontiac.
Trans Am was made great by Pontiac.
LeMans, Grand Am, Grand Prix, etc. Pontiac is what made the car great, not the name on it.
Have any of the nay-sayers actually seen a Commadore or Monaro run? I have. They haul the mail!! and then some. Watch the Australian V8 Supercar series. That will show you how well these little monsters run. It's a great platform to base a modern day GTO on.
If it was Lutz who stated that they weren't appealling to the old faithful GTO buyers, shame on him (or whomever actually said it.) I am one of the GTO faithful. I will be after a new one too. We finally have a Pontiac only (temporarily) car that's V8, RWD, IRS, 6 spd, butt kickin' monster. Be happy. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_cool.gif
Oh yeah, Mr.GTO- I was not referring to you. I took you for one of the proponents of the new GTO. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_smile.gif

John

SuperQuad 10-22-2003 12:11 PM

See this is the same old goofy stuff from the pro New "GTO" guys. You get so pissed because most of us don't accept this rebadged import as a GTO. Is it a GTO yeah according to GM it is. Is it to me - nope! Hey just like you we're entitled to an opinion and the right to express it. The fact that you and your cronies are wrong changes nothing. Seriously though, on another thread - I did think it was a new Neon - http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_smile.gif

The fact that someone is willing to bend over for anything is a bit of a concern to me! http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif

I'm not upset over you not liking/ accepting it. Your right to do so.
What chaps me is that nobody can post anything positive w/o some !@#$@$ popping in his (for the 5,00,000th time) "It looks like a ......" It gets old, ya know?
When I saw it, I was let down by the styling, but it will improve and it is a great car.

John

SuperQuad 10-22-2003 12:49 PM

Nah, I think the new "GTO" rules because it does inspire the best of us!!! Great conversation piece! Personally, I see elements of a Neon, a Cavalier and even a Dodge Stratus in the car. Are we sure thats not a DC/GM collaboration?

Q: "Does he wear diapers?"

A: "He says no, but his pants look kinda puffy."

Mr_GTO 10-22-2003 12:58 PM

Why does it sell so well down under than? If they wanted an old school Monaro liek they used to have, why didn't they design it like that?

As someone has said, Look at the PT/T-bird/Beatle. Sell great for a little while, now one of those is cancelled and the other two sit on lots.

And for those in actall global business's, you would know that GM is a GLOBAL company.

GM wasn't comitted to building any more 2dr RWD coups. Until Lutz came aboard. He, like any good business man(and don't tell me he isn't a car guy) and saw the platform being sucessful elsewhere, not here because there is NONE here, and he did the legwork to get the car here.

Will they be built here eventually? Yup. But you'll have to wait until 2007. But I am sure all the nay sayers would have waited and bitched and moaned that Pontiac had no RWD V8 car.

Funny, I remember in 99 when the Monaro came out and people here bitched and moaned that we couldn't get it and how great the Monaro looked, etc.
Now we get it, it looks like a traditional pontiac in the front(the ONLY part of the car that could be changed with minimal cost) and people bitch and moan because they use the GTO moniker. Hmmm, wasn't there just a thread bashing GM for not using the JUDGE moniker? Well, which do you want? http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...n_rolleyes.gif

dallas 10-22-2003 01:06 PM

Hmmmmmmm...just what IS a "Pontiac" these days? http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...n_confused.gif http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_razz.gif http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...n_rolleyes.gif http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gif http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_frown.gif

SuperQuad 10-22-2003 01:08 PM

Because nothing changed for them - it was an Aussie car built with some American components - same as it ever was. The Monaro to some American eyes wasn't much to look at in its heyday anyway.

And I am sure you were the first one protesting GM when production of the F-body went to Canada right? When they left Cali and Ohio, you were first in line protesting that the F-body was an "AMERICAN CAR!" right?

Well it became a canadian car with American componants. OPPS, oh right. Motor made in Canada, 6spd made in Mexico.

Get over it already.

pierced mikey 10-22-2003 01:20 PM

Brian http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_razz.gif lol

Jim, I hope that it is faster, it's only been 30 years since they made a real GTO.

JC, Humbler might take you up on that $50 http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...s/icon_eek.gif http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gif But seriously, it's hard to accept a car that has its own history and following and has had minimal work to it...Hey wait haven't I already used these points in another post somewhere? I have no arguments about the Monaro being a great car, I know the "GTO" will be a fast car. It already is. Look at it in Australia. Pontiac could have/should have named it something else, especially if they wanted to stay away from the whole retro thing. Like it was said in another thread, look at the Mustang. From 90-whatever up you can see retro cues in it and gee look, THEY SELL. Unlike a small niche car like the T-Bird that Ford thought was going to sell like the Vette. Remember the Fiero? I hope G.M. doesn't make the same istake again and think they're going to sell 150,000 a year

SuperQuad 10-22-2003 01:45 PM

To be quite honest I have no passion for that particular car. Not saying I don't like it, the last one looked cool to me - just don't really care - I liked the Mustang better anyway. On the other hand I hate to see the production of anything that was once made here go overseas. Motorola, Levi's, Fruit of the Loom, damn near anything electronic, just to name a few of the several thousand that have done this. If Budweiser(Bud Light) moves to Mexico I'm gonna switch brands.

Perry, the Firebird evolved into what it was, it didn't take a 30 year hiatus and then have the name slapped on another car with minor modifications. Plus, I'm sure many of us would have been mucn happier if it had a real Poncho motor(I know I know, I'm dreaming).

I was referring to the chevy powered firebirds.

thirdgen455 10-22-2003 10:00 PM

so you mean from 2nd gen up? 2nd gens came with chevys and olds motors, but that dosn't get mentioned much. I love pontiac motors but they are gone by the wayside for later model EFI gizzmo motors that have 50 years of racing R&Dinto it.

GTO your right about the 4th gens, but look at how it worked from 69 to 70 the cars got bigger and blimpy then in 82 they got more of a slicker design then in 93 it looked like they put a air hose in the tailpipe and blimped the cars back up again.

Young One79TA 10-22-2003 11:06 PM

My thoughts on the "New GTO"

The best thing GM could have done with this car is not change it at all from it's Holden counterpart.(Besides what is needed to make it U.S. legal) Not put on the Pontiac and GTO emblems and bring it to the U.S. as what it is. An Australian made Holden Monaro! http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif But it's way too late for that now...I know! http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif

I'm sure if they wouldn't have mentioned anything about GTO in the first place, everyone would have been fine with the car. It would have still sold due to it's great performance and sleeper quality.
But GM wouldn't do this because they're just trying to make some quick $$$$ on the GTO name. I would think that's also why GM is fighting to keep the "Judge" name. So they can milk as much $$$$ as they can from the legendary GTO.
This is probably why most Pontiac enthusiasts are pissed off. And the fact that we're basically stealing the Aussies' performance car and passing it off as ours is also probably pissing off some some of the Holden enthuisiasts. Oops! But GM isn't targeting the enthusiasts, so who cares?

Just my .0002 cents. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif

bobzdar 10-22-2003 11:54 PM

Wasn't the original GTO a rebadge? Wasn't the platform also shared by about 5 different GM cars? These points are pretty rediculous, especially the "it looks like..." crap. The 60's and early 70's GTO looks like a Chevelle, GS, Malibu, Skylark, Cutlass, etc etc. Show my girlfriend a picture of a Chevelle, GTO, 442 and Gran Sport and she'd have no clue which is which. Park a '69 GTO and Chevelle next to each other painted the same color and they'll look a LOT more similar than the new GTO and any other car sold in America parked next to each other.

Then we get to the "it needs a hood scoop" argument. Sounds a bit "rice boy" ish to me. Maybe they should tack on a large tailpipe, some 22's and a huge rear wing too? Or would it be jack the rear up, slap some Cragars or Welds on it and some chrome sidepipes?

I am not really a fan of retro styling, they already made a '69 GTO, they already made a '65 GTO, if that's what I want, that's what I'll buy, not a 2003 that looks like a car they already made 30 years ago. If you don't like the car, I have absolutely no problem with that. Not liking it for some made up bogus reason (or claiming that's why you don't like it) is what bothers me. Maybe I don't have a problem with it at all because I don't have a GTO, but then again I didn't have any problem with the newer trans ams despite owning an old one, even though it looked suspiciously like a certain car made by chevy.

Young One79TA 10-23-2003 12:28 AM

Yes the original GTO was a rebadge but this is not the same. GM is taking something from Holden and giving the credit to Pontiac while calling it a GTO. The GTO came from a rebadged Pontiac car. And as for the whole not liking the car thing. I do like the car. I think the Holden Monaro is a great car.
The truth is that GM just wants to make some quick $$$$. If they weren't targeting us Pontiac enthuisiasts then why use the GTO name at all? It's because the name brings something else with it, it brings back a legend. Which in turn brings in the money.
The car is a great performance car and I'm sure it would sell in the U.S. even without the GTO name. But the name is why all this bickering has started and why dealers are making thousands more with those "right to buy" auctions. In the end, it all boils down to the money for GM. They say it would have taken years to create a totally new GTO, which is true, but if they wanted to do it right thats what it takes. It's not like us Pontiac enthusiasts were screaming and yelling at GM to bring th car back...
This is just the easy way out and the easy way to easy money. It's just a shame that the GTO got stuck in the middle of it.
And I also don't own a GTO but I am a Pontiac enthusiast and know how much the GTO means to some people (my neighbor almost cried when he had to sell his original almost mint cond. 65 GTO 3 yrs ago) even if I only turned 19 yesterday. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif

My point was that the GTO name brings in a lot more money than any other car...an example is those "right to buy" auctions on Ebay. Gm knows the GTO name can bring in more money and are using it to rake in some more $$$$.

so what if they are ???? like i said, joe public is'nt stupid when it comes to cars, the car regardless of the name will have to earn it reputation .

did you all run out and buy that Lemans with the 4 banger FWD , just because it was called a LeMans ? didn't think so.....

With GM retuning this LS1 just for the GTO, doesn't it in a way make it a Pontiac only engine? Its a stretch but I'll go with it. You will not find this LS1 in any other car in GM's line up the way it sits in the car from what I understand. Maybe reaching too far? http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif

In terms of rather having the Monaro the way it was, I prefer the faster GTO version with the Pontiac nose. Without that nose it wouldn't say Pontiac let alone GTO.

Also, I for one HATE this BS of Pro / Con GTO name calling / personal insults. Guilty myself at times refuse to do it in the future. Makes no sense to me attack the individual based on their opinion when that individual is a GM / Pontiac fan. Different story with Ford or any other mfg. vs GM, name calling is usually required! http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gif

Doesn't Mitsubishi sell a SUV here in the states called the Monaro.
Everyone always feels warm and fuzzy when they can look at something new and say that in a way it reminds them of something they once knew. In my opinion I'm going to let the new car by Hoden/Pontiac GM remind me of the old rear wheel drive performance cars that I knew in the sixtys and seventities with just a lot less problems. I'm not currently looking for a new car so I can't say anything about the price. I do know my Wife is totally hooked on front wheel drive cars since we live in a snow belt. This car car will probably be a hard sell in the Northern states due to the horse power to rear wheel drive traction ratio.Just wait until some of the performance companies get thier hands on this vehicle and start tweaking it and perfecting performance packages for it, Hold on to your "dentures" boys, it won't be the "GTO" your father was driving.

The car will not have to earn its reputation, it will just have to live up to its reputation. I know this isn't going to be hard with our current technology and the all mighty LS1 but the truth is the GTO already has a reputation.

No I didn't go buy the 4 banger Lemans because that POS didn't live up to the Lemans' reputation. Also not everyone would get excited about it anyways because like you said earlier, it is not "the best car pontiac have in their line-up and that includes the T/A."

Hmmm....Now that I think of it wouldn't it be cool if they made a new Chevelle? GM doesn't even have to make a new car either...they can just rename some other Monaros. Add a different nose and a differently tuned LS1 and BAM! instant kickass Chevelle! (The best to ever exist) All the cars in the 60's-70's looked the same anyways...so I doubt anyone will have a problem with this idea. They will still sell and GM makes more money. They can even make one with an LS6! Then we can read similar posts on the classical Chevy forums!

How about the Bonne GXP, V8, FWD. Looking forward to its debut...

GTO_2004 10-23-2003 07:08 AM

face it dudes, GM dropped the Ball with performace in proper sized coupes, they all went FWD.

We Aussies happened to be far enough away that it didn't affect us, we kept developing RWD V8 platforms, and we are setting up a factory in the states for the next gen GTO using U.S workers.

don't blame us... we're the good guys. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif
