what is a protecto plate anyway? I've heard of it a lot but never seen or heard a description? thanks

I believe it was like a warranty card that was used kind of like a credit card (with no credit) it had all your car info and was used when you took your car in for service. i think they were plastic.

They had owners info and warranty and have car info, I believe. I have only seen one. People like to have them for documentation. I think they may have come along with owners manuals. I think the one I saw was metal. About the size of a credit card. They have raised writing on them, kind of like the old manual type credit card machines have raised writing at stores to imprint dealers name, etc. Someone chime in if they can describe better.

The one I saw was kind of funny the owner was showing it to me trying to show authenticity of his 1968 Chevelle conv 396/375 hp . I looked the numbers up in a book and they were for a station wagon with a 327 I think. So carry a numbers guide with you when you look at a car.

Protectoplates were metal plates embossed with the original owners name and car ID data on GM cars. They were issued to the original owner of the car and came attached to the back cover of the warranty book.
They're nice to have & add to the originality & documentation of a GM car but very few survive the changes in ownership over the years.
I would probably buy a reproduction if it were high quality and looked like the original just to add it to my collection of stuff on my car. I wouldn't consider a repro protectoplate in the same negative light as reproducing a VIN plate or cowl data plate as it cannot be used to make the car something it's not (i.e. turning a clone into a "real" GTO). Unfortunately, there are some unscrupulous folks out there who will have one of these made and claim it's the "original" protectoplate for their car just to justify a higher asking price.

The Chevy musclecar world, with little to no factory documentation, has always been suscept to fraud, thanks to bogus protect-o-plates & buildsheets... many from the old Chevyworld in Lubbock, Texas.

Anyone know when Pontiac protect-o-plates went from metal to plastic?

I have the original for my 64 GTO.It is metal.

To the best of my memory, the one from my 72 GP was like a seperate plastic Credit card, I don't know what other years used those. Also, where Pontiac's used the metal, Chevies used plastic tape in some of those years. Those have been available as repo's for a few years. Kinda like the old labelmaker guns. It might be difficult to repo the Pontiac ones as they had a very distintive 'logo'(Indian head), that would be hard to reproduce unless you had the original stampings.

My dad bought a '71 Buick Skylark new ,protecto-plate was metal for that car.

i believe that at the time you could also order replacement ones from the dealer if yours was lost during the warranty period. not sure if this has anything to do with the plastic ones or not. the tape is available as NOS quite often on ebay. no one seems to buy it though. i can't see much purpose in having it unless you were going to reproduce it for some reason.

My 1969 Protecto Plate is metal, but has the dyno tape for the original owners name, address, selling dealers number and date placed into service. Metal stamped into the plate is the VIN, the indian head logo, the motor serial number and code followed by the rear axle code. Also on the plate is a single digit number and another code. This is actually the first time that I really looked at this plate kinda neat! Does anyone know what the single digit number and other code stands for? My car is Canadian sold car, so I am not sure if it makes a difference. I do know that the Canadian owner manuals are different.

trix15, where are the codes in relation to what you have already stated? In other words, are they in line with (across or down from) some of the other codes you have mentioned?

My protecto plate has 3 lines of stamped information and 3 lines of the dyno tape. First line top left is the VIN #, second line starts with the motor number (stamped on the passenger side below the head) and code, space then the axle code space followed the the number 3 (don't know what this is for) the third stamped line has a code that start with a PX and a number (which I am assuming is the transmission serial number since PX is the code for an auto trans non ram air non 2 barrel car) last stamped symbol is the indian head.

Next two dyno tape lines are the orginal owner and address, third and last line is the date the car was put into service and the selling dealers code.

according to my data, the axle code should be a one digit code, if you know the sales book columns, look under column 36 and it should be there. The next code should be an axle ratio, found under column 37 of the sales book.

My number book states that a 3.55 ratio, non safety track rear axle has a stamped code on the housing WH, which my PHS documentation states my car was built with and also is the code stamped on the protecto plate. I am thinking that the 3 must have something to do with the rear axle, just not sure what!

Just to add more to the list, My 67 Firebird was originally purchased in Vancouver B.C., Canada. I am the second owner. The Protect-O-Plate is white plastic and is still attached (glue) to the back of the Owner Protection Plan booklet which came with all GM products for that year. The booklet covers warranty outlines, detachable maintenance schedule pages and dealer info. It is produced by GM Canada and is in French and English which I believe would be the first year for this to occur with laguage laws changing in 1967 in Canada. The owners manual is also a Canadian GM printing as well. The card also has a 'knick' out of the top right corner which is supposed to be there.

i've got one from my dad's 69 cat around here somewhere.

it's plastic. i'd have to dig but it think i may still have the orig bill of sale also.

i think, but won't swear that the car was bought in july or aug.
