Went to Houston Raceway Park last nite with my son to race his 2001 Formula. He made his first run on motor only and snapped off a 12.50. Got around to get his timeslip and they tell him to go see the tech. Seems a T-top car is now considered the same as a convertible and needs a roll cage on any run under 14.0. He has the cage and we will be installing it this weekend. I do not know how many tracks are going to hold to this but HRP has to because they host a major NHRA event. JUst thought I would let some people know just in case. I hate to see a lot of the new Fbodies not run but this rule will affect many of them. They just have to figure out a way to let the Rustangs appear to be the better cars. LOL

Good luck installing it in one weekend http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif. Molly or Mild Steel Cage?

it can be done in a weekend if you can cut and do it right

*Front frame being notched to fit 6.5 bs
*22 bar roll cage in the works
*Smoothing everything on the body
*GW solid bushings

fast1970transam 08-16-2003 08:13 AM

make sure you spot weld everything together first, then if your happy fully weld in the cage

Just put the t-tops back in and wear the helmet. It's when you run with them out that the conv. rule takes effect. If they still give you a hard time ask them to show the rule to you from the book, then post it and we will all know. I can't find it in 2003 book or in National Dragster in the rule revisions page. Have fun till 11.99, then you will need the rollbar. You don.t need the full cage until you reach 9.99 or over 135mph, or you have cut the floor from the firewall or halved it down the center. Have Fun.... http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif

It does not matter if the tops are in or out they are still classifing it as a convertible. We had the tops in and he was wearing a helmet. Head tech said no runs under 14 without roll cage.

tikiklubracing 08-16-2003 08:40 AM

Demand they show you it in the rules book, or rule revision pg. of National Dragster. The track is allowed to make rules, this could be the case. They just can't make rules under NHRA mins.I'll call Div. 3 this week and get it straight from the, O well you know. HIH

It might very well be a track only decision. HRP is slowly going to the dogs here lately anyway. What we need is a sanctioned IHRA track in the Houston area. Their rules are a little less than NHRA but there again any track can set its own minimums as long as it stays within the bounds of NHRA rules.

Butch

Jack Ferris 08-16-2003 09:24 AM

The "Rule Book" is merely a minimum guideline. Any track can modify these rules to any extreme they feel as long as it doesn't fall below what the rule book says. Obviously there's a reason for the rule change.
Oh ya installing a cage in 2 days is not hard to do. I've done it several times. Limit your breaks, bust ass and you'll get it done http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif

David Holmberg 08-16-2003 12:44 PM

Tiki, that is the same problem we are having at Bradenton Motorsports park. What makes me mad is a STOCK LS1 F body will run low 13's... http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...s/icon_mad.gif

Remember when I posted about this a while back? It's been hit and miss, but they are enforcing it most of the time...

Skip Fix 08-16-2003 12:48 PM

At the PSN my T top car was OK to 12.00s. They didn't like it in the 11s though. As was stated I have never seen T tops listed in the rule book . There is a windshield and sailpanel like a hard top, not a convertable with just a windshield frame in case of roll over which is why the roll bar rule.

But I guess they can have their own rules. One year in the NMCA everyone had to drain the antifreeze out(I couldn't find that in the rule but understand it) and many had to got to a local welder to have roll bars have a new brace added that not other NHRA track on our circuit required.

HRP is a pain to run at, as they do just want the big events. Go to Sequin or Sealy. Friendlier folks that like the little guys. Sequin is IHRA so 11.50s before a rollbar required on hard tops in the 1/4 hooks as good as nay track.from Tomball just another hour compared to HRP.

bs78ta 08-16-2003 03:35 PM

Skip, I might try Seguin one of these days. It is a 1/4 mile track right? Sealy is just 1/8 mile and I like to get the full meal deal. Good for tuning and practice launches though. Feels like going to a topless bar but keeping my eyes closed.

old68goat 08-17-2003 06:13 PM

I don't have the rule book handy right now, but i raced a convertible and the book clearly states that they must have a roll bar at 13.99 or faster. Plus, ANY car needs a roll bar at 11.99 or faster. I was considering another street/strip car with t-tops and two tracks told me they were classified the same as a convertible. I 'think' the rule applies to cars that DO NOT HAVE PERMANENTLY AFFIXED TOPS.

Good luck with the installation. Also, you might consider installing a 'swing-out' driver side-bar ... which will make it much easier to get in/out of the car once the steel tubing is in there with you http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gif

Hmm, rather than a swing-out side bar, what about bolt-in sidebars? I don't have a rule book, are they legal or what? I would think they would be a lot more conveinient for a fast street-driven car.

Ron 08-17-2003 10:18 PM

I don't believe bolt in bars are legal.

I BOUGHT MY KIT FROM ALSTON CHASISWORKS WITH THE REMOVEABLE DOOR BARS THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO BE NHRA LEGAL. PULL TWO 1/2" PINS AND THE BARS SIT IN THE GARAGE UNTIL RACEDAY. VERY HIGH QUALITY AND EASY KIT TO INSTALL. I HAVE ALSO BEEN TO TWO DIFFERENT NHRA TRACKS AND THEY HAVE NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THEM. ON SEPT 3 I'M GOING TO BRAINERD MN. FOR THE STREET DRAG NIGHT, THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE REAL TIGHT ON TECH SO I'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

bs78ta 08-18-2003 07:14 PM

Well so far the rollbar install has been a big pain and near disaster. Last nite the guy we had welding for us had finished welding down the rear plates. We were sitting there about ten minutes later the car starts burning. We finally get it out and what had happened was the new cars have plastic fuel tanks (like just about everyting else on the car) and it had gotten hot enough to melt the tank and ignite the vapors. Probably lucky that it was full or it probably would have exploded. Went today and got a tank and hoses from a salvage yard and the car is back on the road. It was a close call because we were in a shop with about 6 other cars being "modified". Makes me feel a little bit better that my '78 TA is a little heavier but almost all steel. We will get it finished up tommorow nite and we are using the removable side bars. Later

Had my 76 T/A re-certified before Norwalk and was told there are a LOT of chassis changes going into effect after the 1st of the year.
Better get done what ya need as NHRA is trying to knock out the fast street cars. They don't care. they don't have a class for them anyway. But most fast street car organizations run their safety rules.

And it sure will make the chassis shops more money to increase the contingency money for NHRA.

I'm a big proponent of safety, but not when it's to line pockets un-necessarily.

But I'm just a small fish in a big pond. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...n_rolleyes.gif

Talked to NHRA (Div. 3) today and they say; "That must be a track rule there in Houston. If the T-tops are in, the car is teched as a full bodied car. If they are out they, must tech the car as a convertible." : Conv. rules, 13.99 rollbar, and 5 pt. driver restraint system, SFI approved and dated within 2 yrs.,and helmet. At 11.99 arm restraints and gloves. All I can say is to get the others at your track, with t's, and band together and ask track to follow the NHRA rulebook. Believe it or not this works! Also ask them to call their Div. tech dept. and get this straightened out. Hope I Helped HIH http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gif

When the dude inspected my Chassis he mentioned something to the effect that all cars running 8.50 and quicker next year might need a F/C style cage, even with stock floor and firewall. That takes the street look away from most cars Especailly mine.

If I get that fast. LOL.

Also the wall thickness. He mentioned, might be determined by car weight. The heavier the car, the thicker the tubing. And other deals as far as 7.99 and quicker and 25.1 stuff. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_frown.gif http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_frown.gif

I couldn't keep up with all the possible changes he was mentioning.

I believe in safety, but if this is true, then I feel it's a NHRA, Manufacture, Contingency conspircey.
But just an Opinion.
Sorta like the window net deal.

Tiki, missed ya at Norwalk?
Also. I heard a rumor that in the rule book it says nothing about the window net being replaced if it doesn't have a date tag, just the seat belts? Interesting.

My son talked to a friend of his today that owns a speed shop and builds race cars. He personally called NHRA tech and it is official. He said it would ne announced in the next issue of dragster something. Ttop cars are now classified as an open bodied car like the convertibles and such. 13.99- 11.00 6 point rollbar 5point harness. At 10.99 10 point cage. Looks like we will be hitting IHRA tracks for a while now. HRP was closer but we will have 2 IHRA tracks within 150 miles from us. One in Seguin and a new one to open soon in Lufkin for all us racers around the Houston area :rolleyes

Dude- they were giving some of the guys a hard time at the NMCA races for running to quick with back halfed cars- Stock front frames, stock front suspensions, stock firewalls and floor pans they limit pill size now in Nostalgia Pro Street- guys were bumping the 7.50's with these cars.

7's with a back halved car is too fast. I think 8.50 or faster should be required to have a 25.1C chassis, but that's just me.

If you run 9's Brian, you need:
A full cage.
Window net.
Seat belts.
And a Comp Licence.
Gloves.
Neck brace
A different heavier firesuit.
SFI shoes.

My car runs 150 mph+ and you could drive it with your little pinkie. Except on a bad track.

Maybe the tracks should get their acts together sorta like Montgomery for NMCA. I don't think it was the fast cars that caused all those wrecked cars.

Norwalk was one of the best tracks this year I have been to in a long time.

I only plan on one 9 second pass at Atco, well, for this year anyway.

Still need my chassis cert', my license, firepants and shoes and gloves, and neckbrace.

Already got the jacket and everything else on the list.

I don't put anything past NHRA. Just when you think federal safety standards are stupid- just wait NHRA has a better one. Don't get me wrong, safety is an issue. But everyone that races knows that, and knows the dangers of racing. Racing in organized form became what it is because of laws and regulations off the track. The more NHRA pushes, the more cars return to the street. What the NHRA forgets is that fact.

tikiklubracing 08-21-2003 04:10 AM

NHRA doesn't bow to mfg.lobby. Rules changes come from a system of keeping incident reports at NHRA tracks. Everytime there is an incident on track the track owner is "supposed" to file a report with NHRA. These are then followed up to see if the injury would be lessened by a rule change. Although anyone can submit a rule changes to NHRA before june of that yr. Not all, or sometimes none of the changes are put in effect. NHRA set up SFI themselves, then let them do the testing on safety equipment. The best safety rule I can remember is when they mandated that NHRA tracks move the walls up next to the track if they wanted a major event to take place there ie. div.pts.meet, national open, jegs super quick, Nat. event. etc. 8148 members could do something about the rules. BUT DO WE DO ANYTHING, EXCEPT COMPLAIN TO EACH OTHER?....NO....

But do they take into account the track/conditions sucks for the cars?
Those bunch of cars that were destroyed at Montgomery Ala had nothing to do with the way the cars were built. The TRACK SUCKED!!!!!!!!
It has Nothing to do with the car!!!!!

A lot of cars were wrecked back in the day in certain Street classes because of the power and no wheelie bars allowed.
Early power and no way to control it has nothing to do with current cage safety regulations!!!!!!!!

BTW: The Tech dude did say something about having X bars in the doors for 2004 in all 9.99 cars and quicker. Can anyone verify?

Sorta like more accidents occur in the rain, but these cars run fine in normal weather and have tons of miles on them.

Safety Yes, overkill in the cage concept for Stock type cars, NO.
Certain Tube Chassis Yes and No.
I think NHRA is lining the manufactures and making sure they can continue to supply continigency and payroll money to themselves.
Just my "Personal" opinion. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_frown.gif

Dude I agree with what you are saying about the tracks and not the cars. I was at Montgomery when we had 5 wrecks with a few of them on the lid. I made a pass and got loose at the 1000ft mark, when I got it straightend up I could see water on the guy in the other lanes tires went back up to the tower and told them water was seeping out of the track. They told me the track was safe- after 2 more wrecked they called the race. I feel it is as much the tracks responsibility to have the track prepped the best it can be as it is the drivers for having a safe car. Too many tracks skimp on track prep.

PONTIAC DUDE 08-21-2003 09:13 AM

Like was stated on a Drag race program by "Big Daddy".

The reason they are restricting the fuel cars is not the ET's and Speeds.
It's the tracks can't handle the power and shut down areas are way to short.

Same deal with Street/Mod cars.
Most track are from the 60's and early seventies And the G force is so great on those cars that you can black out on the initial hit.

It has Nothing to do with car safety.

This was posted on a Stock and Super Stock BB. I thought everyone would find this interesting.

Clarification on T-Top Rule

The NHRA Technical service department has fielded numerous questions, concerns, and opinions about a rule change that has been circling through Internet chat rooms and local tracks concerning T-Top design vehicles for the 2004 season.

No rule change is being implemented for T-Top design vehicles. A roll bar will be mandatory in all cars, including T-Tops, which run 11.00 to 11.99. A roll cage is required on all vehicles 10.99 and quicker.

"This rumored change is false," said John Miller, Senior Technical Communication Specialists. "As a technical staff, we have reviewed the subject and do not see a need to change the classification of a T-Top vehicle from following the same guidelines as a hardtop to that of a convertible design."

Hope this will help.

I think your talking about NHRA stock and superstock classes? http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...s/icon_eek.gif Your right those stock classes got their own section in the rulebook. Shorts and or tank tops prohibited while driving vehicle. pg.64 sect. 10;driver...I remember a guy who drove barefoot. This is the way it has been done sincer Wally and Cal timing Ass. started it in the yr. 0. The cars are stock and except for engine are basically that showroom stock. In those days you could order a 265-455 Indian, 365-426 Hemi or 348-427 Big Block, 440 Wedge, 327 375hp Mouse, 421-428 SD etc. with all the trimmings. Gear choice to 4.88. Auto or stick in several choices ea. This would be a good question for Bob Frye or Graham Light. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...n_rolleyes.gif OR W.P. As they say "it's the way they do it". Why does the Earth go around the sun. Why does the Moon go around the Earth. Why does life begin at 40. As I have posted several times. A system of reporting incidents on tracks to NHRA is what makes rule changes. Not a mfg. lobby! They just don't have the incidents in the stock classes, as compared to ET bracket incidents, to warrant any rule changes. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_smile.gif WHEW!

Is it because the cars are unsafe when racing against us peons or is the NHRA just gouging the Sportsman racers because we are more plentiful? Couldn't be revenue driven--not the NHRA. The same thing goes for lap belts vs 5 point hanesses. A stocker can have a 40 year old lap belt but my 5 point has to be changed every 2 years. HMMMM as the Dude would say. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...n_confused.gif

1st lets get the classes right NHRA classifies everything that is not a, top fueler, fuel funny, pro strock, or pro stock bike as sportsman classes include, alky dragster and funnys, Comp. eliminator, stock, superstock, and super classes S/C S/G and S/ST. ET classes are Advanced ET, superpro, pro, and sportsman(formerly street),snowmobile, atv, electric cars and bikes. and new Top Sportsman. Exhibition vehicles, jets, pro mod and wheel standers. Nostalga classes too. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_frown.gifJr. dragsters, well no comment here. NHRA says that when a car is at a bracket event they follow bracket rules. This is why you see the jackets and pants there. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gif Believe it or not NHRA is classified as a non profit organization. Thay recieve advertising money, but no kickbacks that I am aware of from mfgs. Remember a kickback is only illegal if you put it in your pocket, not illegal if you put it into the company.

So what your saying is.............. I can run a T-Top car to 10 flat as long as the firewall and floors aren't modified and a 6 point roll bar is installed?

Is that with and without the T-tops installed?

Yes and you only need a 5 pt. cage. Pass. door bar not mandatory.Rollbar http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gif 1 3/4" .118 wall mild steel or .083 molly to 10 flat or 135mph whichever comes first. With t-tops out you need it at 13.99. Don't buy a full cage and only put in the rollbar part it's only 1 5/8"

Just got my car certified today. Good to 8.50 no faster. These new rules are already in effect. NHRA tech man gave me a copy of what would have to be done my car to get it to 8.49 down. Not only a funny car cage but braces to be installed under the body also. I will see if i can scan it and post it.

Inspector told me they are trying to give the heavy street cars the heave ho, or keep them from going faster than 8.50.

on a diet to go faster........

Tiki, maybe I should have said ET bracket racers. These racers provide the tracks with 90% of their revenue. Alcohol cars are on the bubble with NHRA because the tracks would rather run super street. Why, more money. Niether the NHRA or the various tracks give a darn about ET racers or entertainment value. More whining---whats with the LED timing lights? Compulink comes up with this new and wonderful idea and NHRA goes with it. No input from the racers. Small track racers go to the ET finals at the big tracks and they have to "learn the leave" all over again. But think how many LED equiped practice trees will be sold--sorry Wally but it just doesn't make sense.
