I was looking at summits world products 500 cid BB 540 hp to 580 hp on pump gas crate motor about 7500 bucks good parts that could
probably make 800 hp with more compression and bigger cam. I see Butler has Tiger 1 POntiac crates for about 7500 making about 450 hp and would need better heads and probably NOS to make 700 hp TIger 2 and tiger-3 good for more but cost 15k or so ! I sometimes think pontiac venders think pontiac guys must be rich if they care about going fast. sorry venting steam but the Chevy is all after market parts good parts and is cheaper no wonder so many go that direction if they want to go faster. |

I hear ya 77TA. I could've built 2 Chevies by now. But I'll never give in. Hang in there. Some good things are happening in the "aftermarket" Pontiac world. I've noticed some things are getting cheaper but there's still room for improvement. Hopefully prices will continue to level out some more.
|
Chevy's are cheaper (relatively) for two reasons:
1.) Larger market...this means more consumers to buy the product, therefore prices can be lower and the manufacturer still make a decent profit. 2.) 30+ years of R&D over that of the Pontiacs...Pontiac hasn't made a V8 that could be modified for performance since 1978 yet Chevy still is. More money being spent on R&D for Chevy as a result, which means more parts availability at a cheaper price. I don't get pissed off about this, so why should you? I choose to run Pontiacs because that's what I want to run. They're more interesting to me than a Chevy, and the bodies of Pontiacs have always had better styling than Chevy in my opinion. If money were an issue, I would have bought a '78 Nova for next to nothing and put a small-block in it to run 12's in the 1/4 mile and probably have $4000 tied up in teh whole car and have a halfway decent "streeter". |
I was having a weak moment earlier sorry. I understand the whys its just frustrating fighting an up-hill battle and then having to pay more to boot.
|
I dont consider it an uphill battle because I usually end up beating chevy guys, the other day I raced a guy that was bragging about how much he had in his motor and after I beat him I informed him that I had less money in my whole car. I have several chevrolet as well as pontiac products I drive and race the pontiacs, I play with the chevrolets. and as far as price goes, I am restoring a 59 impala an I am here to tell you "cheap" ha ha, if I had as much money in my 64 lemans as I have in this 59 impala the lemans would be capable of space travel.
|
I gave in...BBC for me now. Sorry guys, anybody looking for some serious Pontiac horsepower should e-mail me.
Complete race 455 motor w/ race trans or will separate parts. Complete 455 & TH400 that needs rebuilding. Sorry but having 750 Horsepower for just a little more than my top end costs is WAY TOO appealing to me. Breaking less parts, availability of parts, and a LOT more RPM appeals to my logical side. ------------------ <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>"I am beautiful, I am smart, I can do whatever I want...and dog gone it... people like me!"...Scott Misus<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> |

Nope, not kidding.
|
Keeping the body Pontiac...THAT'S ABOUT IT THOUGH. Be realistic, it is just logical to go with the BBC. Period.
|
Not to long ago you said something about a promise made.
|
Regarding 77TA's comment about "the uphill battle", if it were easy, everybody would be doing it. I guess that's why so many are running Chevrolet's, there's so many parts available, it's "easy" to go fast.
Rashy, you dissapoint me if you're going the BBC route. A self-motivated person as yourself with the "in your face" attitude you have (let's face it, Pantera and a body full of tats is definately "in your face"), I would expect more from. Sit back and think it out first. If parts are breaking now, they'll break just the same with the BBC. If Steve Minton can run his mid-9 second 455/E-head "Mob City" Firebird all season with no troubles and just give it a bearing and ring job off-season, there's no reason you can't either. Maybe the machine work is in question? I see so many guys running Pontiacs in my area, blowing their shi* up sometimes 2 and 3 times a year, yet they keep going back to the same guy for machine work and assembly (funny though how this same guys personal stuff never breaks). Not suggesting you point fingers, I'm just saying.....looks like a duck, walks like a duck..... |
Sorry to see another fast Pontiac retire. Can't blame you for wanting to go faster. Chevy's definitely have the advantage of R/D and the market volume.
Pontiac racing is changing with the coming of new after market engine components. Unfortunately it's going to take time and money to achieve Chevy's level of performance. I hope in the next 5 years we will see 1000+ horsepower Pontiac engines a common thing on the dragstrips. They'll never be as cheap but, with time they will become be as dependable as the Chevy in the other lane. When it comes down to it, it's how fast do you want to go and what you want to do it with. I would rather be a second slower and have a Pontiac under the hood than switch to a Chevy. What ever the case Rash, good luck and hope you find what you're lookin for. Bob Mullikin |
When the price of an IA block goes down to the price of a Merlin block, when there are REASONABLY priced heads (that actually flow), when there are redily available cranks, when parts start showing durability...I'll be back. Yes, I liked the idea of going fast in my Pontiac and I made the kind of power to go that fast...just sensible to convert. That's it. I'll still be at Norwalk and the Grove...just not in the Pontiac Powered Q16...even though my heads are Pontiacs Big Chiefs

Well guys I had to go that route to I was hurting to many parts trying to be competetive with the rest of the s/c racers. Pontiac motors cant stand the heat week after week of running 8.60 at 158.00. Then putting them on the throtal stop and running 8.90 at 156.00 the next week. Just had to many block problems. IA block is just not cost effective by the time you bye a good crank for 2200.00 the block for 3500.00 that dose not include the rest of the parts. Going to NY to pick up my 509 pat musi motor carb to pan with ING system is half the cost of the pontiac motor. 509 makes over 800 hp for half the cost! Sorry guys will still see you at the pontiac events with my freinds other pontiac firebird. Good luck to all jack gaydosh

This SUCKS! Hey, it's ok if you want to go BBC, Paul. Nobody is busting your balls about it (at least I'm not). But fer Chris' sake man, don't insult us by referring to us as "fools" (and that goes for you too 6567GTO), after all, you ran the Pontiacs just the same. I still thought of you as a Pontiac person, just one that wanted to go faster for cheaper (or faster for the same dough), but after this last comment I now wonder?
Jack, glad to see you make it to the board. Your brother finish back-halving that street Firebird yet? |
I'm not calling anybody a fool. I was just playing with Rash - that's all. I love Pontiacs and that's it.

OK, OK. No harm, no foul.

Mitch, Loyal Order of Moose??? Missed that one completely. Care to explain?
Paul, There is an old saying I have heard for years. It goes "money is without creed". A similar saying might be "horsepower is without creed." At least, in my mind it is. As far as I'm concerned Pontiac horsepower is only better than Chevy horsepower if there is more of it. So whatever it takes to get you into the 9's, I'd say go for it, and I'll look forward to seeing your results posted here as well as a few wheelstand pictures. Good luck. Richard/Vegas |
Hummmmmmmmmm.
IA block..$3495.00 Merlin block..$2995.00 $500.00 breaks the bank?????? Billet BBC crank...$2000 Billet Pontiac crank...$2000. ????????????? Rods, Pistons and everything else in the shortblock 'IS" the same. Heads. I guess some people need to really check what Mitchell,Reher, Musi and others are getting for a GOOD set of high flowing "Ported" Chevy heads. Let's compare Highly ported to highly ported. I know the BBC's got awesome bigger #'s. Of course, we all know where the "Whining is my life" bumper stickers started, Hahahahahaha. If ya want to run low 9's or high 8's in a heavy car then Pontiacs aren't for the weak hearted. I would change to, if I ran 11's with a BIG investment. LOL. OP's my car does run 11's................on motor........ with a big investment......Hahahahahaha. You will hear about people leaving the Pontiac community, the same way Indians leave the reservation and the Amish leave to go see the world. LOL. I left the Chevy community to come back to Pontiacs after 20 years. I went faster too with less money. But the thrill was gone as far as heads up against another same brand. Bracket racing has changed(electronics)and felt it wasn't my cup of tea. Different rules apply to building a dependable Shortblock then with the big 3.....and it will take it's toll on many. In Florida, Pontiacs are respected on the Street down here...there are a bunch of low 10 and 9 second Pontiacs. you just don't hear about them on this board. Pontiacs are an inner soul deal anyway....Same with the GN's, AMC's, Olds, etc. As long as you can only get a certain bore size in the spacing allowed and bottom end support with the parameters given....you just have to live with limited hp and dependability in that scenario. The faster you go the more time you spend tearing down and inspecting. You really think the NOS/Comp eliminator boys and Pro Mod guys running in the low 8's/high 7's go long without a tear down with Chevy engines. Of course you can go faster cheaper with a Chevy big block.....that's never been an argument. That's a no brainer!!!!!! If bracket racing/SC racing on weekends is your game then You might want to reconsider. Or check your engine program. I compare Pontiac racing to competing with SBC's.....Same bore and head deal. Same "BLOCK" since 1955, Not a new block like Chevy did in 1965 with the 396!!!!!!! What would the Chevy boys be doing now with the 265 if they didn't redesign there racing program???? I see the biggest engine they ended up with in the SBC was the 400 cu.in Hummmmmmmm. Just hard to convince people outside the Pontiac community of the similarities. Hey Paul, have fun, but I'll still blow your doors in with my Pontiac Powered STREET Firebird. Hahahahaha. Same Bat time, Same Bat channel. LOL ------------------ NOS is like American Express.....You don't leave home without it. http://www.angelfire.com/fl4/pontiacdude428 |
Dude...my point is this. I can run the number with a Pontiac, I can run the number with a Chevy...I WILL break less parts with a Chevy, and that's a fact. Man, you MUST be going through a mid-life crisis or something...HAHAHAHAHAHA

Hey Rash, How much do you want for the rebuildable 455/400?
|
Look Dude, I want to have fun racing...I don't want to have to spray 300 to 400 horsepower of nitrous to turn low 9's ONCE!
My motor makes PLENTY of horsepower to dip into the 9's IF I REMOVE THE EXHAUST...get it? If you don't just e-mail Scott Rex and ask him what is restricting my car. Fact is this...the car WENT 10.12 last year through the exhaust and it went 10.11 this year...I am just not ready to spray a car that already made over 730 horse with another 250 to get me there THROUGH THE MUFFLERS AND THROUGH TAILPIPES TOO FACT #2...nitrous will blow up any motor and melt any piston Zeek...(I never said what you were insinuating in another post on this board)...I did say that I will break less parts with a Chevy than a Pontiac...hey Jimmy, throw a 500 horse fogger on your motor (when it's finally together again) and let's see how long your crank lasts...now do the same to a comparably assembled BBC and guess what...I'll bet you your bottom dollar that the BBC will take it...more than one time too. FACT >>> BBC's have M U C H STRONGER CRANKS and a lighter reciprocating mass as well and can handle WAY more RPM than your motor ever could...PERIOD I am not slamming Pontiacs now and I really can't wait to see Scott hit the 7's with that 90 of his and I would love to see the Dude get that Funny Car fixed. I will still be coming to these events, whether I race or not, whether I have a Pontiac or not. When I start seeing used IA blocks and Superchiefs on the market...I'll probably be back, but for right now I am changing. Back to another subject...You know what Jim, you say that my car can't run 9's...why don't you come down to Atco this Friday and find out for yourself exactly how slow it is while I give her the final run before the motor and trans is removed and sold...you can sit next to the buyer and talk him out of it... [This message has been edited by Rashionality (edited 05-29-2001).] |
No harm, no foul, Paul. Hey, if you sell the car before Maple Grove and don't have a racer ready yet, I'll be more than happy to allow you the use of my pit space to set-up your BBQ. I'll supply all the beer, softdrinks, plates, napkins, and utensils, you bring the rest (LOL). We can even bring Berkheimer's dog, Arnie, over to keep any unfriendly's away from the food, and to piss on Misus' leg when he comes over.
|
Hey, I got a 130# Rotty we can use if Berkys pup can't make it.
|
I'll be at the Grove. The motor and trans is most likely sold, just have to give the guy an exhibition of what it can do Friday night. I am still going to use a Pontiac body, but with the kind of power I am looking into my back halved car is just not good enough. It is basically a tubbed street car and I need at least a Pro-Stock back end.
|
OK, here we go. For the record:
My Street 428 cu.in. T/A has made 300 or more mid 9 second passes with a conservative Nitrous tuneup and weighing over 3600lbs!!!!!. I haven't hurt an Engine with Nitrous since 95. No hurt parts. But times are changing and more people are flying, so it's time to step it up. This was a new engine (Same configuration and only a new rotating assembly)at Butlers with 40 low 9 second passes testing down here in Fla with the same conservative tuneup. I wasn't watching the tuneup and went to a second stage and didn't add enough retard into the hp level I applied in the second stage. I Had "ED" covered with a single stage but as a competitive racer, I was looking for the KILL button. Isn't that what every racer tries to do??? I see a lot of breakage, but if you personally ask them what happened, I think you will find it wasn't the parts but other factors involved. BTW: I guess you, Paul, don't follow NMCA/NSCA or Pro Mod racing as there is a lot of breakage with NOS and Blowers. You said you break a lot of parts????????? that's why your changing, hummmmmmm. Then your selling the car because your deal with Scott said you wouldn't put a Chevy in it, then now you are if you sell the parts. It's still a tank. Then you were going to run in the 8's last fall on NOS, now it's too hard on parts. Then you can run 9's on motor but your selling it before you do? I didn't know you were breaking parts on a regular basis. Scott broke a "USED" and out dated rocker assembly at Norwalk, not a PONTIAC related piece!!!!!! These rods breaking aren't PONTIAC pieces, there CHEVY conversions, hummmmmmmm!!!!! Yes there is a weakness and it's the stock block and crank. When trying to break that 8 second barrier. Change these "2"...."TWO"... pieces and I think you will have a liveable combination that will go fast. I have been building and racing all kinds of brands for over 30 years and have seen them ALL break. The quality of parts in just the last 5 years alone have dropped the grenading #'s in half. You are new to this sport and thus don't know the total picture. There was a time when Pontiacs running in the low 10's broke on a regular basis. Hummmmm, times have changed. I can remember back in the 80's of Chevies breaking on a regular basis trying for the 8's. Sorry to hear anyone leave the Pontiac Racing community, but " A mans gotta due, what a mans gotta due." But unless you further educate yourself, Your Man, Scott Rex can't be there and hold your hand all the time if you race, Hahahahahha. Your still gonna break parts with a Chevy trying to run consistent 8's for a full season on one engine in that heavy a car. Period. In closing: Paul, Race hard and have fun......And I'll wait for you at the other end of the 1/4 mile to say Good race, Hahahahahaha. Later, dude. ------------------ NOS is like American Express.....You don't leave home without it. http://www.angelfire.com/fl4/pontiacdude428 |

|
Paul, I WILL sit in the car and race with you if you keep those ribs and bacon wrapped shrimp coming at the track.
And for the record Paul HAS NOT broken any engine parts. He broke transmissions, U joints, drive shaft, blew out an oil filter or 2, got dirt stuck in the carb floats, just plain had a run of bad luck, but the engine has never hurt itself even shifting it at 7000 RPM. Paul's car will run mid 9's all day, he just needs a little more seat time. I don't know about the rest of you guys but I certainly didn't learn to drag race in a 9 second car. |
Thank you Scott, and no Jim, Ken is not on my hit list. You see he ribs me, yes, but not while I am trying to sell something. You see it is the fact that I thought we were friends Jim, that's it, that is what pi$$ed me off. If that statement came from somebody I never met then it would have been handled differently. You should have been a little more astute with your posting that's all.

Paul, my problem is......I was born hungry. OK everybody that knows me, just shut up. Hahahahahaha. I'm getting to look like Misus. Except for the Sargent Carter haircut, LOL.
Scott Rex... come on now. your just sucking up for the wrapped shrimp.......wrapped shrimp.....hummmmmm, and it's only 7:43 in the morning and it's making me hungry. If the car will run mid 9's and doesn't break any Pontiac related parts, then the million dollar question....... Do I need to ask? Why quit racing with Pontiac power. Inquiring minds want to know? I like the break down responses to my questions. LOL. ------------------ NOS is like American Express.....You don't leave home without it. http://www.angelfire.com/fl4/pontiacdude428 |

It is an Omen to me...that damn motor is like a bad dream, with hot chicks, you love it but you hate it. It makes great power and handles the RPM's to boot...but I cannot use the remote system on this car as there is just no room for it. I have 1 more housing to try out and if it works YAHOO!!! if it don't well it comes down to what sells first...the motor or the car. I have my eye on a nice tube chassis 69 and if I can get close to what I want for my rolling chassis I will be able to afford it...I then can keep my Poncho as I will have plenty of room to do what I have to. I will not use #10 lines for the remote filter setup and in my engine bay that is all I can fit, with the lines WAY TOO CLOSE to the headers for my taste...I did this before with my first motor and wiped out the bearings REAL quick with street driving, just not enough oil flow and that was a slow car. We'll see what happens... |
Paul.... The 1st Gen idea sounds good to me. They are 400 to 500 lbs lighter than the 2nd Gens. About the oil filter relocation hoses.... I have a dual filter relo, and I use aircraft fittings on the ends of GoodYear hoses. Mine was close to the headers also. I bought insulators from Napa that are good up to 1200 degrees. I routed them like 2 to 3 inches from the header and slipped the insulators down towards the bottom going up. So far, so good.
|
How much pressure? What type of filter and mount? Block mount or remote.
------------------ NOS is like American Express.....You don't leave home without it. http://www.angelfire.com/fl4/pontiacdude428 |
This talk about remote oil setups has me wondering (I think my setup is adequate, but still wondering).
I'm running the Nunzi block-off plate with -8an fittings and braided hose, running parallel with the tranny cooler lines to the radiator core support with a single filter remote mount using a Fram HP series filter. Been using this setup for 3 years now with no troubles. Stock oil pressure sendor mounted at lifter galley (the plug near the distributor hole). Oil pressure still reads between 35-40 psi hot while cruising. This is adequate for a street driven 455 making 425-450 HP, no? |
Brian, I'm running the same set-up. I have the Nunzi plate with #8an lines running to a Moroso single filter housing with a K&N HP3002 filter. I've run this combo for 2 years with over 200 passes and no probems yet. I pulled the pan last winter to repair a leak and checked the bearings -they all looked fine. I shift the car at 6200. Should I be worried??
|
I have a Nunzi special with a dual remote filter housing. It's bolts onto the top of my wheel well. I'm getting 40 to 45 PSI at idle. I use AC Delco's...
|
Things that make you go hummmmm!!!!!
I used to run a remote filter assembly. At first, I used the Moroso Ford style filter unit and a Fram racing filter. No problems with this @ 90 psi around 7200 rpm (35 idle). Then did some research and found that the Chevy unit would flow more volume, so I changed to the Moroso Chevy filter type and the Fram racing filter. It then proceeded to blow the O-ring out at higher rpms!!!!! Lost my car into the guardrail during a Shootout in Bradenton. Then saw that Jr Griffin running in NMCA had a similar problem and lost his whole car. Coincidence??? If you look at the difference of the Ford and Chevy filter, you will see that the Ford has the O-ring further in with a better lip capture area on the outside edge. The Chevy racing unit that Fram is selling has the O-ring protruding half way out of the filter and is located at the extreme edge of the filter, thus, in my opinion only, will be more susceptible to blow outs with higher pressures. They rate this filter for more pressure, but the seal is "TWICE" the height of any of their other filters. I informed them of this and asked why a different thickness O-ring compared to "ANY" of their others and got no response or answer. They didn't know. For Ho Ho's, I changed just the oil ring from another filter that sat where ALL the other sit (height wise) and had no further problems. I now however, when running the Chevy style, steer clear of the Fram racing Chevy type. I run the AC/Delco racing change over. I do however like the Fram Racing Pontiac long style, HP 2 and currently run this unit mounted directly at the block. I would imagine there are others out there with similiar stories now that the computer age makes information readily available. I have run a block mount filter for many years with no blowouts at 75psi cold at idle,35psi hot at idle. Have used just about every filter you can screw on the housing. The trick? Did this about 15 years ago. Put your filter on the housing in a vice off the motor. Use a minimal amount of oil on o-ring. If oil gets between top outer edge of housing and upper lip of filter, wash out with carb cleaner. Take silicone and fill between housing and top lip of filter. Let silicone cure. No drips, no runs, no errors, no guard rail errors, that is.

No offense taken at all.
I do have 1 question though...how the heck do you bolt the housing and filter back on the block? Do you run big tube headers? I know that it is impossible for me to do this procedure due do header clearances, or lack thereof. |
