What color should the heat shroud be ?

Ram4king 06-02-2005 10:15 PM

black

taximan 06-03-2005 06:22 PM

thanks,

I was confused because I have seen some that were silver cad.

anyone else seen silver cad ?

gtohurstjudge 06-04-2005 10:32 AM

Taximan, the Ram Air 3 shrouds that all the vendors sell are black...The Ram Air 4 shrouds that all the vendors sell are silver cad. I
would assume that these are the correct finishes
for these parts. If your shroud is not black,
I would just order a new one....they are 95.00 plus shipping.

RAM AIR 1967 06-05-2005 03:53 PM

My 1969 ram air III was silver cad.
Joe

taximan 06-05-2005 06:25 PM

I am going to assume for POCI judging that the black shield I have on my R.A. III is correct.

Sounds like I could see both finishes.

Ram4king 06-05-2005 08:49 PM

they are all black I have both ram air III and IV survivor cars and they are black. I think the diff on repos are made by different outfits.

racerboy 06-06-2005 05:54 AM

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I am looking at the PY RA III heat shroud for my 1970 Trans Am (previous owner put on headers and tossed RA manifolds). I see that for the IV motor, there are two pieces. Is there only a single piece for the III motor?

EBJudge 06-06-2005 08:51 AM

Yes, one on the drivers side.
That is assuming that TAs and GTOs are the same.

RAM AIR 1967 06-09-2005 05:40 PM

My 1971 HO is silver cad. and my 1974 SD is silver cad. also.
Joe

BobsGTO 06-11-2005 08:17 AM

I just bought a 69-70 Ram Air 3 shroud from OPG (part no. G201173) and it is silver cad too.

Kenth 06-12-2005 12:16 PM

I recently bought a RAIII shroud for my 1970 Judge from PerformanceYears, it is silver cad. too.

'ol Pinion head 06-12-2005 12:56 PM

Have had several original '69-70 RAIII A-body exhaust shrouds, & all were black, as is the exhaust shroud for the longbranchs on my '69 428HO GP.

Unfortunately, have never worked on a '70 RAIV car that still had it's original exhaust shroud so am no help there, but two of the originals off my '71-72 HO cars are originals, washed out clear cad, & are same shroud as used on the '70 RAIV.

peppergreen 06-13-2005 08:01 AM

My RAlll exhaust shroud from Ames was silver, but most of the pics of show beauties I saw were black, so I powdercoated mine underhood black. My problem is that I've got the wrong head bolts (ARP) that don't have the long stud!
I'll have to see if I can purchase them with the long stud.

SWEETJUDGE 06-13-2005 09:36 AM

they come raw finish & should be painted flat black

BobsGTO 06-13-2005 11:18 AM

Does anyone know what brand of paint to put on this shroud, so it will look right (color and gloss level) and survive the exhaust heat? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

taximan 06-18-2005 12:49 PM

I hate to beat a dead horse.... but, i just had this extended conversation today with a 31 year local Pontiac mechanic who is in our GTO club regarding 69 heat shields. He insists, very strongly that both RA III & RA IV heat shields came silver cad.

Does anyone know anyone I can contact that would have this answer ?? I don't want to lose judging points for something this stupid.

RAIVJUDGE 06-21-2005 01:07 PM

I purchased an NOS RA III preheater shroud years ago and it was silver cad.

Mike

'ol Pinion head 06-21-2005 01:42 PM

Will put my trust in original parts on low mile documented original cars. Esp take off pieces that were removed many years ago & saved.

NOS (service replacement) pieces can often have other than stock plating/appearance. Been through this before with other parts such as early GTO hood hinges.

taximan 06-21-2005 03:35 PM

I received an email reply from Jon Wacholtz, the Judge category chairman of GTOAA yesterday.

He is sure they were all silver cad.

The truth probably is that in 1969 the supplier made some black, and some silver.

Go figure !!!

70ramair455 06-21-2005 09:17 PM

Mine is an original 455 ram air car (70) and it is Silver too.

JasonD 02-26-2008 10:07 PM

I just did a search on this subject today, as I found that the inside of my preheater shroud is most definately painted black.......and I had always thought they were silver cad plated.

It's definately painted black on my car. This is on a completely original 1970 Judge Ram Air III, Oshawa built.

Bet Winner 02-27-2008 12:30 AM

My RA III Judge did not have its original shroud when I got it, but I have an original RAIII shroud from a 1970 Trans Am that was removed the day the car was purchased. (The original owner gave it to me.) It is black and the paint has more gloss than I expected--definitely not flat.

I'm with you OPH. All of the RAIII cars, both A and F bodies that I have had with original shields, were in black. All of the 70-72 round port cars that I have had were sliver cad.

judgert 03-01-2008 08:26 AM

When I bought my judge in 1985 the sheild was laying in the trunk and it was a little scraped up and scratched but it was painted black. This is a Ram Air 3 car.

RAM AIR 1967 03-01-2008 01:44 PM

From 75 to 80 I had over 15 ram air sets of 69-70 GTO and all were silver cad no black paint.

Ram Air IV Jack 03-02-2008 02:58 AM

I bought my first Judge in 1973, RAIII car, and I believe the shroud was black. My original survivor RAIV car with its original shroud is silver colored. The smaller shroud under this one is also silver colored.

Judge273 03-02-2008 09:54 AM

RAIVJack: Is yours a 69 or 70? How about some more details and or pix on that survivor Judge?

Just to add to discussion. My 70 Judge RAIV is silver, and my 69 Judge RAIV is black. 69 is a survivor early build car.

Sorry about that it is a 69 that I have had for 28 years. 82K with original clutch and exhaust. Original RAIV #'s motor has never been out of the car. 06A car. :)

Judge273 03-03-2008 05:06 PM

Sounds like a great car and a good resource for information on those RA IV Judges. Any pix or more details??

dr-doug 03-03-2008 05:22 PM

My 32K mile '69 III is black. So Am I to assume all 3 of my ram III '70's need to be black also?...DW
