this may be old news to a lot of you but it was news to me. i bought a june issue of PONTIAC ENTHUSIAST magazine at the phoenix pontiac heaven meet. when i was on the plane i read one of the most amazing articles i have ever seen!
a very eccentric individual in a town called jackson township ohio (just miles from columbus) owned a lot of land. he started having people with older cars (mainly pontiacs and caddy's) store thier old "relics" on his property. when owners couldn't pay the storage after a while he kept the cars....and the cars kept building up and building up.after 20 years he had more than 400 pontiacs from the 50's & 60's and over 200 primo 1955-1960 cadillacs!
in reading the june '99 article it said
that there was a zoning violation and they gave this gave a very minimal time to get rid of the cars and clean the heavily wooded property. the eccentric individual (who often went by different names) coudn't do anything in such a short time and the entire land was siezed.
wooster iron & metal boght all the contents,then soon after TEXAS pontiac collectors joe evans & dick brackin bought all the cars for very reasonable amount!

Bonneville Joe (longtime POCI'er) out of S.Texas had some major input on that find & some of cooler early boats were saved. Might ck with Dan Gregory in OH & see what was saved GTO wise.

There is another oldtimer in Wind Gap, PA that did
the same thing. There were many old pontiacs, cadillacs, chevys(50's vintage) and the like throughout his yard. The yard was called Hawkies. He was an eccentric, knoweledgable old man and very particular about what he sold you. The prices were often quite reasonable but sometimes he would beat you up on a part. I think he measures the price on the look of determination on your face when you find the part you need.

I remember once talking with him about 12 years ago when Japan was buying up everything 'old cars' (Mercs, Big Blok chevys.. etc.) and exporting them to Japan. He told me that several Japanese buyers stopped in and wanted to buy up all his Chevy Big Bloks, get them crated and delivered to a NJ port for export. Old Hawkie said he chased them off.

I was at the place in ohio when the car halers were there. It was ungodly, There were 8 rows of cars lined up for at least 250 yards. I hope those old ones were saved. I was in awe.

I have see some of the cars at Dans place in Ohio. He has alot of the parts that were there.
Dan has a prettygood collection of pontiacs down there. I like his 455 powered gto convertable I really wanted the 2+2 65 convertable he had there but wouldn't sell at the time

A freind of mine picked up 2 of the cars, a 64 GP & a 64 2+2 both cars were complete, and heavely optioned, but as the artical said they were parked next to the Ohio river, it flooded that area several times over the years, and the cars were sunk to there axles in the dirt. No floor boards or trunk floor. And the 64 2+2 almost was torn in half tring to get it out of the dirt & onto a trailer. Alot of good parts at a reasonable price though.

Here's some partial pics of my 350 vintage Pontiacs (and a handful of Olds/Buicks) and growing located out in the dry Arizona desert. Very little rust/flooding here.
Fortunately, I worked to get my zoning and permits so it's mine forever. Too bad the owner in the midwest didn't do that. Selling some of this stuff helps to restore/build my Pontiacs and handles my nitro fix. If anyone needs parts and can't find them. Give me a try. Steve www.pontiacheaven.org

I read a story about those cars in Smoke Signals.It said that there was an auction held to sell them,and many cars that were bought were stripped of usable parts and then crushed.The article said there were cars that would break in half when the new owners tried to load them and there were even some Judges out there.It's too bad someone didn't go out there and make a video of all those INJUNS! I think the article even stated an ad was placed about the cars at one time in Hemmings.

I'm looking for a decent 68 passenger fender for my GTO. LeMans or Tempest fender will work too? You have an extra laying around?

While at the '03 Pontiac Nat's in Norwalk I had a converasation with an older gentleman at the swap area selling some parts that said he was at a place (I forget where, mid USA), anyways, he said he was at a place that had tons of GTO parts, and 50 or so complete bodies, that have been collected from the 70's. The guy that had it all had grown tired or something of having them all and his wife had cancer and had to sell quickly. The owner said the first $10,000 could have it all. He said "DONE,I will be back with the money". The guy I talked to went home, not having $10,000 in his pocket, scraped it up from the bank and family, rented 2 tracker trailers, and called the owner back, 2 days after he left. With the same luck I have, the owner told him he just sold it to someone else, after all he said "the first person with $10,000 takes it all." Now this story is a little hard to believe, but, what if... I believe him anyway. Hmmmm

I remember talking to a guy several years ago in Columbus, Ohio just a couple of months before I moved south that had a collection just like you described. One car in particular I remember him mentioning was the fuel injected Bonnie. I never really knew his name but I think they called him Pontiac Dan (different from GTO Dan). I think he also had several complete and orginal Judges in his collection. It's a shame that he had to lose everything and hopefully these rare cars will be restored.

I went down the Columbus Pontiac collection, got there after the "good" cars were gone. There were plenty of rows of very rusty Pontiacs & many holes of dirt where the light of day probably hadn't seen in 10-20 years where the better Pontiacs got pulled. I'd say the collection was 90 percent Pontiac too. There was very little left for the auction would have liked to see some of the cars that got pulled.

I would have loved to have seen a follow up story on the Ohio auction. Does anybody else have any stories. I still HATE myself for not going. To me, that was one of the most interesting Pontiac stories that I have ever heard. Didn't the guy in Texas get the good stuff out of there first? Was there any GOOD stuff that was usable. I'd like to see Smoke Signals follow up on it and see how many cars got restored.

How could this guy afford to get all these cars??? I heard he was storing some but didn't the owners eventually want them back?? What a bizarre story.

In the Fountain Colorado area there was a discrete little ranch that 40-50 2nd generation F-body cars on it, most being Pontiacs. I went there a couple of times in 1995 looking for parts. An elder gentleman owned the ranch/yard and was also very perculiar. He was hard to buyparts from, he truely believed he would restore most of those cars.

I was re-assigned to Ft. Carson last year and took a little trip over there to see if the honey hole was still there. ALL of was gone, like it was never there...

He had his name legally changed to Dick Pontiac, and aside from the @600 cars in the Jackson Twp. field, he lost several buses and a garage or two full of partsmany NOS,that locals stole from him. The Jackson Twp. incident stemmed from land-grabbers wanting to buy his land. He wouldn't sell, and soon the Township "Trustees" were fining him upwards of @ $600 a day, so the land was seized and went to auction. He's still fighting it in court, I believe. Nearly every car there was special in some way either having multible-carbed big engines or four speeds or both. Bunkie Knudsen's specially built Pontiac ragtop was reported to have been found in there. Cars were all covered with tarps, tires and pallets. Many were toast. There were several Bonneville convertible fuelies in there as well. A couple of Judges and many GTOs and Firebirds, but mostly big cars. We were bidding on a '63 421 Tri-Power four speed ragtop Bonneville to "do up" our '63 GP. Everyone was on cell phones and the prices went crazy. Kruse actually marketed the whole deal and anvertised the cars as "protected from the elements all these years." Not!!! Cars were falling in two when they tried to move them. Springs began popping thru the trunks. I cannot believe that all these cars sat for all these years less than 30 miles from my house and I knew nothing! They'd still be there if the real estate folks hadn't turned him in. You absolutely could not see any cars from the road. GTO Dan found out and brokered the deal on the cars with the scrap man from Wooster. Dan was to sell off the cars, scrap man would scrap the rest. I think they payed @ $30k for the cars. Two Texas tycoons came to buy cars and after picking six [two were Caddys with two fours] their tab was @ $76K. They offered $100K for everything and the scrap man sold it, much to the dismay of Dan, who could not come up with the cash to begin with. Anyway, they picked thru the cars and then let Kruse get rid of the rest, and...that's the skinny. Ron
