Tri power tags
 

I have a 66 gto with its orginal tri power,my quetions is the orginal id tags are not so nice.Should I put repos on ,or will this hurt the car at a points show???And as far as repo tri power items air cleaners,linkage ,ect does any of these take any points away at all?Or are the repo parts the way to go?

Assuming that the reproduction parts are exact reproductions of the originals that they replace, points are not usually deducted. In the case of the carb id tags; the originals were ALL color-coded anodized aluminum (beginning about 1961). The aftermarket repro tags that I have seen offered for sale are plain aluminum (uncolored).

Jon, were the color codes the same for all 66 GTO's, or were they different depending upon the options like A/C, 4spd vs. auto, A.I.R., etc?

Would this be correct for a 66 GTO? Green front tag # 7026055, Gold center tag # 7026056 and Black rear tag # 7026057.

Carburetors have different colored tags by model and year. A 4-speed carb would have a different color than a tag for an automatic. The numbers mentioned are not Pontiac.

Jon, what are the Pontiac colors supposed to be for 66 GTO 4spd and automatic?

The numbers and colors I listed above are Olds tripower. They are being listed on ebay with a buy it now of $155.00. Apparently this guy out of Nebraska is reproducing them and anodizing.

I am not sure I understand this at all. If you have a restored set up, and open the hood at a show, aren't you showing everyone what the colors are? Then whats the big secret? I own a 67, my tripower will probably never go on my car. Even if it did, it would NEVER be numbers matching to my car. I find it very frustrating this information is not shared. I share all I can on here if I know it.
So, still looking for front, center, and back 66 tripower carb tag colors for 4spd car.

Jason, I have an original 66 Tri Power and although it is up in the barn loft I seem to remember all the tags being aluminum and in raw aluminum color (light silver) and I do not remeber ever seeing an anodizing on them even twenty five years ago, I can look this weekend at it but I am pretty sure the tags on mine have always been raw aluminum but it easily could have been worn off by handling or fuel, ect...I'll pull one off and check under the fastener, will not be able to post results until Monday though. I didnt check PY but at Ames, they give the year and the # that is on each tag. I'm sure if you e-mail them they could tell you the colors.

On 64 tripower they were olive drab, black and a lite gold. Black is in on the center and either gold is in front or the olive drab. The following picture is from my car but I just sold it and it's on the way to Ohio so I can't check.

GTO restoration guide has tag numbers for carb. Mine on a 66 setup are all one color.

I think Jon is trying to protect his restoration business!The aftermarket guys do sell tags for diff years but they are just clear alu.The fact of having the correct tags seperates the restorer from the rebuilder.JMO,Tom

I have looked at my 66 Tri Power unit and under the bolts there is no anodizing left to determine if there was any in the first place so from what I have to look at I have to say that mine (which are original) are raw aluminum. (I may be wrong but nothing points in the other direction). Tim

Thank you for the reply Tim john. That makes a few originals all raw aluminum. Tommie69, Please look into the colors you have and get back with us. I'm sure there is more than a couple people out here that have colored tags, either original or restored, that could post what colors they have.

I had a '66 LeMans with a 2BBL and the carb tag was black. This was strange since I believed they were all just aluminum (non colored) tags. (I had a '65 GTO with [non-original] 3x2 induction and they were all aluminum colored -- this was late 70's -- probably before reproduction tags were available.) Please post whatever you find on this subject. Just curious, thanks.

well my 64 center carb has a tag with a number on it 7024175 and it aint black or silver it's a bronze / brown color and it has coding on it cain't remember but I think it was B L 48 or something like that but I'll post a pic later

and I have never purchased any repro tags ever . I purchased this 64 in 77

I have a nos 64 center and a 63 rear.They were both colored,I know the center was brown also.Will look for the 63 tag.Tom

One thing you have to look at is the date on the tags. Believe it or not, O.E. tags were a coded color, S.R. tags were normally brown or maroon. No need to have all the different colors for S.R. carbs.

well I really don't care what color my tag is it has the correct part number on it for a 64 center carb manuel trans . no one else is ever going to own this car any way until I'm out of the picture .Then they can do with them what ever they want
