Stupid looking double blown

Is there an advantage to a double blown skyscraper stuffed Pontiac like the GTO in the new HPP magazine? Seems like a blind spot.

jimmy daniel 11-27-2006 04:50 PM

I loved his car. I hated the 2 blowers.

Colin 11-27-2006 05:23 PM

I have that issue and I read the article...........it says in the article that there isnt really any advantage. He just did it for show and plans to run only one blower when racing the car.
The owner of the car is a member here at PY.

Yes he is and he just had some bad luck with it.

Saw it at Norwalk this year.
Beautiful car.
Told Bill he needs a shift lever that go's up past the top of the dash to match the theme.

Nice GTO, saw it at Norwalk. Uniqueness is the advantage.

David Holmberg 11-27-2006 06:21 PM

It's exactly what he wanted, and it's not a cookie cutter car.

I love it!

bikerdaveandjenn 11-27-2006 08:25 PM

thats all that matters! i wouldnt have built it, but it is COOL.

Yes - that would be the esteemed Pontiac462

I'm sorry it doesn't meet with your approval. Next time, I'll get your permission on how I will build MY car. Silly me for not checking with you first. I'll make sure it doesn't happen again!

For those who just don't understand the concept of being different than the crowd, I'm sorry. I'll sell it real cheap and go down to the vanilla store and buy a white 72 Firebird Formula. Seems EVERYBODY has one of those. Maybe I'll get a 77 Firebird Formula or a 69 Grand Prix and REALLY stick out in the crowd.

I'm sorry you are too shy to stand out or too uncomfortable to try something different, but that is no reason to slam somebody else for doing what THEY WANT to do with THEIR car. Since you probably rode the short bus to school, have a friend or caretaker read this link to you. Maybe then you will have a clue.

So Bill, does that piss you off or what? Tell us how you really feel.

Bill Bolin 11-27-2006 11:49 PM

If he would have said "not my style" or " I don't like it" or something semi-tactful, it would have been alright. But to title the thread "STUPID" is something else. I didn't throw the first rock, but I will throw them back!

bikerdaveandjenn 11-27-2006 11:52 PM

you tell them! your car is YOURS. i think its coool as hell, not something i would build but something i would definatley stop and watch go by. a flat out trick car that you should be proud of.
Dave

Pontiac462 your car is a very intresting car and i say its way cool!! when someone builds it cooler it will be posted.just do it!Be different!

I would call it 'silly', never stupid. But I love silly.

71firebird400 11-28-2006 01:28 AM

Once again, an internet-jockey is compelled to share his opinion with a bunch of people who don't care.

I like the car; it's far cooler than any "restoration" ever will be.

GRX 11-28-2006 01:37 AM

Hey, whether you find it silly or not there is no doubt that car attracts some serious attention. I saw it at a local car show. Glen Burnie perhaps? Can't remember for certain as I went to several local shows last season.

When it pulled in heard people yelling across to eachother & pointing. When I saw the car from afar figured it was just another Pontiac with a blown BB Chevy. Was very happy to see someone had done that with a Pontiac. Might not be the best set up peformance wise, but it does serve to show people that something besides a Chevy, Ford, or mopar can be made to run well. And I think all will agree we need a bit more of that.

screamingchief 11-28-2006 02:46 AM

Yeah,it's an attention getter, like the "spoiled brat" throwing a fit when the other kids dont wanna "play the game, their way"...

Why is it that people who claim to do this or that to show they're "unique" or "different" go ballistic when a few of the sheep "dont get it" and speak their own minds???

If one is truly an invidual comfortable with "standing out in a crowd" and being "unique",they should care less what anybody else thinks, that simple.

But if a person is just an "attention whore" who just craves the adoration of the masses, they'll often wanna just lash out at those who are "less than impressed" by the self-appointed "greatness" of thier creations.

A true individual does'nt need to "stand out" or prove they're "unique",they are comfortable to stand on their own merit, regardless of any other folks opinions.

Get over it,whatever the adjectives were used in reference to the car...

Some of us folks are just fine with our "plain vanilla" '72 white firebirds (not even a formula!),no need to try and "impress the masses",or prove a damn thing to any others, just driving 'em and having fun is enough for us.

BTW,'72 birds are a pretty rare bunch! ;)

Bret.

This "spoiled brat", "attention whore" wasn't attacking everyone who owns a white 72 Firebird. I wasn't attacking anyone who owns a stock car. I have heard, read and seen THOUSANDS of people who don't like my car. I expected that. I knew going in that it wasn't "everyones cup of tea". But as far as going "ballastic", I don't think it went that far. I was just replying to an obviously uninformed person who may not know WHY I did it and just posts a thread titled "Stupid double blown" on their own......not replying to a post made by someone else. He obviously felt strong enough about it to start the thread so I felt strong enough to respond. I guess I'm just different than most people. There are a few car sites that I go to that have a ratings system to rate the cars on them. If I like a car on there, I give it a 10. If I don't like the car, I just don't rate it. I'm not gonna slam somebody elses car who may not be perfect, or "my cup of tea" just because I don't like it. It's their car and they can build it the way they want, paint it the color they want and modify it any way they want. I keep most negative opinions to myself. I have had friends email me links to MANY other websites where my car is getting blasted by people who are haters. Some I just laugh at, others I shake my head at and others where I feel the need to respond. I usually respond to personal attacks, like "stupid", and ignore most of the ones who want to tell me how to engineer it so it will work better. Or how I can make it faster. I have no problem with those that disagree with my taste, but why feel the need to start a thread bashing it??? There are plenty of threads that have been on here (PY) about my car where he could have responded that he didn't get it or didn't like it. No big deal. So I feel he just hasn't read the posts that showed why I did it.

I don't think my "self appointed greatness of my creation" is a truthful statement, but you are entitled to your opinion. I have friends who have dumped upwarss of $100K into their creations......Some Camaros, some Chevelles, some Mustangs, some street rods.........and they blend in at car shows. Nothing worse to me than having a $100K Pro Street 69 Camaro sitting beside a $30K Pro Street Camaro and nobody noticing the difference. I'm a Pontiac guy and wanted to stand out from the crowd of other Pro Street cars......without spending $100K. I feel I did that.

surfnuke9 11-28-2006 08:53 AM

Bills car is truly awesome to see. The paint is gorgeous, the interior is flawless, the engine/blower combination is.....well, HUGE!!!

Truly epitomizes the notion that too much is never enough.

More power to you Bill. (no pun intended)

Your car got the best praise I can think of... My 2 year old son saw it and immediately said WOW, cool....

Chris Roach 11-28-2006 09:06 AM

I must say, when I first seen pictures of the stacked blower, I took the rolled eye approach  . After seeing the car in person at Norwalk and the Woodward dream cruise, I took on a whole new appreciation for his car. It truely is a work of art. And I think Bill has achieved his goal of "standing out in a crowd"

Talking to a guy at work about the dream cruise (a month later) He says, "Did you see that orange GTO with the 2 blowers?" With thousands of cars and millions of people at the cruise, and his car comes up in conversation, thats "standing out in a crowd!"

Mission accomplished!

PONTIAC DUDE 11-28-2006 10:04 AM

I too would be offended using the word Stupid when addressing someone else's idea or ride.

Yes, I agree another way of wording it would have been more appropriate.

Fish 11-28-2006 10:13 AM

Is it okay to call LilJerk stupid?

Rugratman 11-28-2006 10:25 AM

Maybe if it had a third blower........?

Our hobby is always split in two....The stock boy's or the modifiers.
Simple as that. Some are more stock then others...see the guy's with the crayon marks. Some guy's are more modified then others....see Bill's ride.
I love em all. And they both get on the cover of HPP.

Personally, I'm a stock guy. But I do appreciate the workmanship on cars like Bill's.

Would I build it myself? Probably not

But do I think it's cool? He!! yea!

wheelspin 11-28-2006 11:57 AM

stock vs modified

Like Rug said, stock vs modified. To me, Bill's beautifully crafted ride represents the spirit of hot rodding and making your car like YOU like it. What's wrong with having every eye on your car  everywhere you go because of it's uniqueness? And he drives it, unlike the perfectly restored trailer queens seen once a year @ the Nationals.

I think his car is awesome. I am building a blower car for the sheer shock value. Bill has taken this to the next level. I think its cool that it runs. If you think its stupid, consider this: none of these old pontiacs are practical at all. We all own them because they look cool. So they are all kind of stupid, but I don't care. I love my gto and I want a blower that sticks through the hood... because when I was a little kid I saw cars like that at a car show and I always wanted one.

Mr. P-Body 11-28-2006 02:56 PM

The car IS an excellent job. I've seen it both at Norwalk and VMP. Attention to detail, quality of paint, etc. THAT'S what a show car is about. The more outrageous some of the equipment, the higher on the list, outside the "stock" realm.

It isn't all that far-fetched, either. In the early '60s, there was an early version of a funny car called "Miss Deal". I believe it was Revell that made a model of it. It was a '53 Stude with a Chrysler Hemi and a "pyramid" intake and two GMC blowers. I believe Edelbrock fabricated the manifold, but have no real info for that. I DID see the car once, when I was 12, at Fontana ('66).

Keep makin' 'em stranger...!!! I like it!

Jim

UKcat 11-28-2006 03:00 PM

462, I saw your car at the GTO Nationals in Louisville this year; I thought it was awesome!!! Do you run it like that?? It's a tremendous amount of money to lay out for an engine, but I like your style!!!
Uh, somebody mentioned you having some bad luck with it; hope you didn't tear your car up!

Silver Judge 11-28-2006 03:07 PM

What ? Huh ?
No likey ?

This double blown car is freakin' wild and way cool

The people that "do not get" this car must also not understand the whole RATFINK thing either. This tasty, tasty double blown judge is simply a modern interpretation of that type of build. Don't you agree ? I happen to like it !

By the way, I saw the coolest RATFINK movie a little while ago, if it comes to your town, check it out. One of the things I learned is that Ed Roth created RATFINK as the "anti-mickey". In other words, the antithesis of Mickey Mouse.
He did not like warm and fuzzy. He liked mean, wicked, nasty, loud, smoky, fire belching stuff.

Here is a link to the movie website for those that are interested
http://www.sphinxproductions.com/pages/ratfink.html

GRX 11-28-2006 03:13 PM

Cool ... will have to look for the movie. I remember when RatFink models were huge in the 60s. Built a few myself. Wish I had some now as they are worth a lot of money.

Also, would have to say I am taken aback somewhat by the amount of tension displayed here.

Jim Scites 11-28-2006 03:42 PM

I've known Pontiac462 for several years personally. I helped him sell his last 2 cars before this one. Each one got more radical as time went by. I remember when he brought this one home, it was pretty radical then, but it evolved into one of the most different vehicles I have ever seen. I don't know a more recognized car out there today. He is on the front cover of a national magazine, he is all over most of the other magazines. Bill did a wonderful job on his creation. The detail is really wonderful. The interior is fantastic, the paint is breathtaking, this is a top notch car. Sounds ALMOST like jealousy to call the man that built such a wonderful and detailed machine stupid.

Why dont you follow your own advice,go back and re-read the posts...

Nowhere did I address Bill (Pontiac462) directly,so if he took offense at my comments,he did so on his own,for reasons of his own.

The only comment directed at him intentionally was the "get over it" comment.

The rest of my comments were just generalities, not intended for anybody specifically,go over the wording very carefully,if they strike a nerve with you, that's on ya'll,not me.

If I wanted to say something directly to/at Bill (Pontiac462),I'd say so directly,no bs games!

My comments were made to address the "car show" mindset some folks seem to have (nobody specifically though folks...),like all that matters is "one upping" the competition and winning awards and having the masses fawn over their creations,to me it's all kinda like a pretty girl with low self esteem who attends pagents, just a kinda pathetic need for positive reinforcement to improve ones ego,but if that's what "floats your boat" more power to ya'll.

And this applies to concours restorations as much as all out pro-street cars!

My comments were quite a bit different than Bill's directly stating a person who'd own a "plain vanilla '72 firebird formula" must've been riding "the short bus" to school (which of course was a jab at the topic starter) because Bill openly stated his comments were "for those who dont understand" and made it an "open" statement applying to all who dont follow his reasoning.

I never once directed my comments at anybody, they were general statements with no specific targets,if they found their mark, that's just dumb luck...

But the main point here is this,Bill did exactly what he was pissed at the topic starter for doing,he slammed the topic starters choices in cars, and he did this because the fellow stated his opinion, when he himself says that was wrong, there's a word for that type of behavior,it's hypocrisy.

You are entitled to your opinions as well. Like you, I read "between" the lines. I never mentioned anyone inparticular either when I said Vanilla store 72 Firebird Formula. If you or anyone else feels they hit the target.....That's just plain dumb luck!

And as I stated, I didn't throw the first rock, but I will return fire. Let me ask you something......If someone said "why would you marry that stupid woman", would you take offense??? That is someone else second guessing your choice of a person. Isn't it? Same thing here. I would never say to someone, or state publicly that someone was stupid or made a stupid decision marrying the wrong women. I feel nobody has the right to second guess my decision on my car. You can choose not to like it. You can choose not to build one like it. I just think it shows ones character to start a thread stating that. If we were talking one on one and he said he didn't like it, that's fine. If he would have IM'ed me and said the same thing, that's his choice. But he slammed it publicly and should have expected some retaliation. Yeah, it pissed me off, but If we were somewhere and someone said out loud that I married a stupid woman.....he would be very lucky to just get away with me telling him where to go. Of course I take it personally.....I have a lot of money and time invested in it. I think we all take our cars personally. They are an extension of each of us. Thats why we are enthusiasts. We can agree to disagree. We like Pontiacs...others like Chevys, Fords, Mopars and others but when we are at a general car show, we can appreciate other brands as well.

But I forgot.....

"My comments were made to address the "car show" mindset some folks seem to have (nobody specifically though folks...),like all that matters is "one upping" the competition and winning awards and having the masses fawn over their creations,to me it's all kinda like a pretty girl with low self esteem who attends pagents, just a kinda pathetic need for positive reinforcement to improve ones ego,but if that's what "floats your boat" more power to ya'll.

I just like hanging out with other car people and meeting new friends. I drag raced for over 13 years and I didn't care if I won or lost. It was something to do. The same goes for car shows. I don't care if I win or lose, I go to see other cars and meet new people (and hang out with old friends).

Pontiac462, you could spray bio-solv(orange citus) with a spray bottle.
Hit the worst spots 1st, rinse with garden hose
Go over the entire underside a 2nd time and rinse.
It dries fast and clean.
Will smell like oranges for a day or 2 cause it gets up in places while rinsing.
Especially when heated up.
